Chapter 8 - FLIGHT 402 TO GENEVA

The private airfield on the western outskirts of Chicago was bathed in the harsh, glaring white light of runway floodlights. The twin-engine Gulfstream jet sat on the tarmac, its turbines whining at a high pitch, ready to surge down the runway and disappear into the night sky toward Geneva.

Inside the terminal, Richard Harrington strode toward the private boarding ramp, his custom wool coat sweeping around his legs. His face was a mask of furious desperation. His empire was collapsing by the minute; federal agents had already raided his corporate headquarters downtown, seizing servers, bank ledgers, and decades of falsified records.

He reached the base of the metal stairs leading up to the aircraft door, turning to his head of security.

"Is the car secure?" Richard demanded.

"Yes, Mr. Harrington. Once we're airborne, the federal injunctions won't apply to international airspace—"

Before the guard could finish his sentence, the screech of tires echoed across the tarmac.

Three black Moretti SUVs came screaming through the security gates, smashing through the automated arm and scattering private ground crew in every direction. The vehicles fanned out in a wide semicircle, cutting off the jet's path and trapping the Gulfstream on the open runway.

Richard froze, his foot resting on the first step of the boarding ramp.

The doors of the lead SUV flew open. Luca Moretti stepped out into the jet stream wind, his dark coat billowing behind him. Right beside him stepped Arthur Carter, holding a heavy encrypted laptop, followed by two state troopers and four tactical agents.

"Richard!" Luca's voice boomed across the tarmac, cutting cleanly through the roar of the jet engines.

Richard turned around, his expression twisting into a snarl of pure hatred. He gripped the metal handrail of the boarding stairs.

"Moretti," Richard spat, his voice trembling with rage. "You arrogant little punk. You think a few thugs and some forged paperwork can touch me? I own half the judges in this state!"

"You used to, Richard," Arthur Carter said calmly, stepping forward into the pool of runway light. He held up his laptop so the screen faced the billionaire. "Six years ago, you buried the accident report on Route 9. You paid off the coroner, bought out my employer, and forced me into hiding. But tonight, every single one of those offshore wire transfers has been decrypted and transmitted directly to the U.S. Attorney General's office."

Richard's face drained of all color. He stared at Arthur, recognizing the man he had tried to erase a lifetime ago.

"You..." Richard whispered, his voice cracking. "You're supposed to be scrubbing toilets in some miserable school."

"I was protecting my son," Arthur replied steadily. "And tonight, I'm making sure men like you never destroy another family."

Luca walked slowly toward the stairs, stopping just a few feet below where Richard stood frozen on the metal steps. The mafia boss didn't raise his voice, but every word carried the weight of absolute power.

"You tried to buy my dead brother's child," Luca said, his eyes locking onto the billionaire with terrifying intensity. "You conspired with a treacherous woman to tear my family apart. And for that, Richard, your money, your mansions, and your empire are gone."

Richard lunged backward toward the cabin door, screaming frantically to the pilot, "Take off! Take off right now!"

The aircraft door began to slide shut.

But before the latch could engage, the side door of the jet was yanked open from the inside by two federal agents who had boarded through the rear crew hatch. They grabbed Richard by the shoulders, wrenching him backward down the metal stairs and slamming him hard against the side of the tarmac.

As the cold steel cuffs clicked around Richard Harrington's wrists, the roar of the jet engines slowly wound down, winding into a quiet, dying whine.

Luca watched as the billionaire was hauled away toward a waiting state police cruiser. The war was over. The shadows that had haunted their families for a decade had finally been blown away by the harsh, honest light of truth.

Luca turned around, looking back toward the SUVs where Emma and Arthur stood watching. A quiet, profound sense of peace settled over the airfield, promising a brand-new dawn for everyone who had survived the storm.
