Chapter 2 - THE GHOST IN THE ARCHWAY

The heavy crystal chandelier above the banquet table seemed to hum with an unnatural tension. The silence in the Moretti dining room was so absolute that the distant ticking of a grandfather clock in the hallway sounded like a hammer striking iron.

Ten-year-old Daniel stood just beyond the archway, his small fingers tightly clutching the worn fur of his stuffed brown bear. His big, dark eyes blinked against the blinding glare of the overhead lights, taking in the sea of expensive suits, the overturned chairs, and the frozen faces of twenty-six wealthy guests who had come to celebrate a wedding that was now dead and buried.

Emma’s heart leaped into her throat. She looked from the little boy back to Luca Moretti, whose powerful frame had gone completely rigid. The air in the room felt thick, charged with an electric fury that could ignite at any second.

Luca’s dark eyes, usually cold and calculating as he managed his Chicago empire, were wide with a shock that bordered on disbelief. He turned his head slowly, his gaze locking onto Vanessa.

Vanessa looked like a cornered animal. All her polished grace, her razor-sharp poise, and her carefully constructed social climbing had dissolved in an instant. Her face was stark white, her lips parted in a breathless gasp as she stared at the boy standing by the doorway.

"Daniel..." she whispered, the name catching in her throat like broken glass.

The boy took a hesitant step forward, his worn sneakers squeaking slightly against the polished marble floor. He looked up at Eleanor, his grandmother, whose face was stained with fresh tears.

"Grandma?" Daniel asked again, his small voice trembling. "Is that... is that her?"

Eleanor didn't answer right away. She covered her mouth with a weathered hand, her shoulders shaking as she sobbed softly.

Emma couldn't just stand there. She stepped away from the banquet table, her heart aching for the child. She walked across the marble floor, kneeling down so she was at eye level with the little boy. She offered him a gentle, reassuring smile, keeping her voice soft.

"Hey there, buddy," Emma said, gently touching his small shoulder. "You must be Daniel. I'm Emma."

The boy clutched his bear tighter against his chest, eyeing the opulent room with deep suspicion. "Grandma said my mommy was here. She said my mommy lived in a big castle with lights." He looked up at Vanessa with a mix of longing and fear. "Are you my mommy?"

Vanessa flinched as if she had been struck. She crossed her arms tightly over her chest, stepping back until her back pressed against the side of a mahogany sideboard.

"I'm not your mother," Vanessa snapped, her voice cracking with a harsh defensive edge. "The old woman is senile! She doesn't know what she's talking about! That's not my child!"

A collective gasp rippled through the guests. To deny your own flesh and blood in front of an entire room was a cruelty so profound it stunned even the most hardened hearts in the building.

Luca took two slow, deliberate steps toward Vanessa. His face was a mask of cold fury, but underneath it lay a deep, terrifying grief.

"Look at him, Vanessa," Luca said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, quiet register that made the room grow even colder. "Look at the boy's eyes. Look at his jawline. He has my brother's face."

Vanessa shook her head frantically, her dark curls whipping around her shoulders. "No! You're imagining things! It's a trick! They planned this to ruin me!"

"A trick?" Eleanor cried out, her voice suddenly ringing with a mother's fierce, long-suppressed rage. She pushed herself up from her chair, ignoring her walker for a moment as she pointed a shaking finger at her daughter. "You left him on my doorstep ten years ago with a diaper bag and twenty dollars! You told me you were going to New York to start a new life, that you couldn't be burdened with a bastard child while you were hunting for a rich man!"

The revelation hit the room like a physical blow.

Luca staggered back slightly, pressing his hand against the edge of the long dining table. His younger brother, Marco, had died tragically five years ago in a warehouse fire—a tragedy that had nearly broken Luca's spirit and left him alone at the head of the Moretti family.

"Marco..." Luca breathed out, the name tearing from his chest. He looked back at Daniel, seeing the undeniable resemblance to the brother he had loved and lost. "Marco had a son? And you kept him a secret?"

"Marco didn't even know!" Vanessa shrieked, finally cracking under the overwhelming weight of the truth. Tears of pure panic streamed down her face. "We were kids! We were stupid! If I had a baby tied to my hip, I never would have gotten out of that neighborhood! I never would have amounted to anything!"

"And so you dumped him on an eighty-year-old woman who worked herself to the bone cleaning offices?" Luca shouted, his voice finally breaking through the silence, rattling the crystal on the table.

Before Vanessa could reply, the heavy front doors of the mansion burst open.

Three men rushed into the foyer, led by Luca's head of security, Matteo. But they weren't alone. In Matteo's hand was a heavy leather briefcase, and trailing behind them was a tall, middle-aged man in an expensive gray suit—a man whose face made Vanessa turn completely ghost-white.

It was Arthur Vance, the family lawyer whom Vanessa had secretly met with just the day before.

Arthur strode into the dining room, stepping past the stunned guests, and walked straight up to Luca Moretti. He placed the heavy briefcase on the white tablecloth and flipped open the brass latches.

"Mr. Moretti," Arthur said, his voice calm and professional. "I believe Miss Bellini forgot to show you the documents she asked me to draft yesterday afternoon."

Luca looked down at the papers inside the briefcase, his eyes narrowing as he read the title of the top legal document.

It was a guardianship surrender form, designed to sign away all parental rights of a minor child to a third-party trust—funded by none other than Richard Harrington’s corporate accounts.

Luca slowly raised his head, staring at Vanessa with a gaze so lethal it made the security guards step back.

"You didn't just hide my nephew," Luca whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying calm. "You were selling him to my worst enemy."
