Chapter 3 - THE PRICE OF A NAME

The briefcase sat open on the pristine white tablecloth like a ticking bomb. The crisp legal pages inside rustled softly as the draft from the open foyer doors swept across the dining room.

Luca Moretti stared at the documents, his fingers curling over the edge of the mahogany table until his knuckles turned pure white. The sheer audacity of the betrayal pressed down on the room like a physical weight. Not only had Vanessa hidden his dead brother's child for a decade, forcing her own aging mother to raise the boy in poverty while she wore diamonds bought with Moretti money, but she had actively conspired to hand his blood over to Richard Harrington—the rival syndicate leader who had been trying to dismantle the Moretti family's shipping empire for years.

"Is this true, Arthur?" Luca asked, his voice chillingly low as he looked up at the lawyer.

Arthur Vance adjusted his glasses, nodding gravely. "It is, Mr. Moretti. Miss Bellini contacted my firm three days ago. She claimed she needed to clean up loose ends before her high-society wedding. She offered a substantial cash retainer—funds that, I might add, originated from an offshore account tied to Harrington holdings—to legally sever the child's ties to the Bellini and Moretti bloodlines under a falsified identity."

Vanessa stumbled backward, her designer heels catching on the edge of the rug. She grabbed the back of an empty chair to keep from falling.

"He's lying!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking as panic clawed at her throat. "Arthur is lying! They're all working together to destroy me! Luca, you know me! We've been together for two years! You know I love you!"

"You love power, Vanessa," Luca said, stepping away from the table. He walked slowly toward her, his tall silhouette casting a long, dark shadow across the polished marble floor. "You love my name, my money, and the throne sitting beside mine. You never loved me. And you certainly never loved my brother."

He stopped just inches from her. Vanessa looked up into his eyes, trembling violently. For all her manipulation and cold calculation, she had finally pushed too far, stepping off a cliff of her own making.

"Luca, please..." she whimpered, her polished facade completely shattered. "Don't do this. We can fix this. We can send the boy away to a private boarding school, nobody ever has to know—"

Before she could finish the sentence, Luca raised his hand—not to strike her, but to signal Matteo.

"Take her to the lower east warehouse," Luca ordered coldly, his eyes devoid of any mercy. "Lock her in the holding room until I decide whether she stands trial in a court of law or answers to the family council for treason."

"No! No, you can't do this to me!" Vanessa shrieked as two burly security guards stepped forward, grabbing her firmly by the arms. She kicked and thrashed, her designer dress tearing slightly as they dragged her screaming across the marble floor, past the stunned guests, and out into the night.

The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind her, cutting off her muffled cries.

Silence descended on the dining room once more, heavier and more profound than before.

Emma exhaled a breath she felt like she'd been holding for an eternity. She turned back toward little Daniel, who was still clutching his stuffed bear, wide-eyed and shaking. Without a second thought, Emma knelt down, scooped the little boy into her arms, and held him close against her shoulder, murmuring soft, comforting words into his messy hair.

"You're safe now, sweetie," Emma whispered. "Nobody is going to hurt you."

Eleanor watched them, her weathered hands trembling as she wiped away fresh tears of relief. She looked up at Luca, who stood frozen in the center of the room, staring at the empty space where Vanessa had just been.

Slowly, Luca turned around. His gaze moved from the lawyer, to the terrified guests, and finally landed on Emma holding his ten-year-old nephew.

He walked over, his heavy footsteps echoing in the quiet room. He stopped right in front of Emma and the little boy. For a long moment, the ruthless mafia boss didn't look like a crime lord at all; he looked like an uncle who had just been handed a second chance at family.

Luca slowly extended his arms.

Daniel hesitated, looking up at Emma for approval. Emma gave him a warm, reassuring nod. "It's okay, buddy. Go on."

The boy shifted, sliding out of Emma's arms and into Luca's strong, tattooed embrace. Luca caught him effortlessly, lifting him up and pressing the boy's small head against his shoulder. A heavy shudder ran through Luca's frame as he closed his eyes, burying his face in Daniel's hair.

"I've got you, little man," Luca murmured, his voice thick with unshed tears. "I've got you. You're home."

But as the emotional reunion touched the hearts of everyone in the room, Emma's phone suddenly buzzed violently in her apron pocket. She pulled it out discreetly, glancing at the glowing screen.

It was a text message from an unknown number, accompanied by a single photograph.

Emma’s blood ran cold as she looked at the image on her screen.

It was a picture of her younger sister, sitting bound and gagged in the back of a dark van, with a rough hand holding a pocket watch right against her cheek—the exact same pocket watch Eleanor had dropped earlier that evening.

And flashing across the bottom of the screen was a text message that made the room spin:

“Tell Moretti the boy stays with us, or the girl dies tonight.”
