Chapter 5 - THE TRAP AT PIER 42

The cold wind blowing off Lake Michigan bit straight through Emma’s thin maid's uniform as she parked her old Honda behind a stack of rusted shipping containers at Pier 42.

The docks were completely abandoned at this hour. The massive industrial cranes stood like skeletal giants against the dark, starless sky, casting long, menacing shadows over the concrete ground. A few weak sodium-vapor lights flickered overhead, casting an eerie orange glow over the damp pavement.

Emma stepped out of her car, pulling her thin cardigan tightly around her shoulders. Her breath plumed in the freezing air like small clouds of smoke.

"Chloe!" she called out, her voice echoing across the empty space between the warehouses. "Chloe, are you here?"

Only the sound of the dark lake water slapping against the wooden pilings answered her.

She walked slowly toward Warehouse 4—a massive corrugated metal building with a rusted sliding door left slightly ajar. A single yellow light bulb burned dimly inside, casting a narrow wedge of light across the gravel path.

As she approached the door, her phone buzzed in her pocket.

She pulled it out. A new text message:

“Walk inside alone. Leave your phone on the barrel by the door.”

Emma swallowed hard. She placed her phone on the wooden barrel outside the entrance, took a deep, steadying breath, and grabbed the edge of the heavy metal door.

With a loud, grating screech, she pushed it open and stepped inside.

The interior of the warehouse was cavernous, smelling of salt, old rope, and damp timber. Stacks of wooden crates towered toward the ceiling like a maze of dark walls.

"I'm here!" Emma called out, her voice bouncing off the metal roof. "Let my sister go!"

From the shadows near the center of the warehouse, a slow, mocking round of applause echoed through the quiet space.

Step by step, a man emerged from behind a stack of shipping pallets. He wasn't Richard Harrington himself, but rather Viktor Vance—Richard’s primary fixer and enforcer, a man known throughout the Chicago underground for leaving no loose ends.

"Well, well, well," Viktor said, a cruel smile playing on his lips as he adjusted the cuffs of his expensive coat. "The brave little housemaid actually showed up. I have to hand it to you, sweetheart. Most girls in your position would have run crying to their bosses."

"Where is Chloe?" Emma demanded, stepping forward despite her trembling knees.

Viktor snapped his fingers.

Two men in dark jackets stepped out from behind a stack of pallets, dragging a bound and gagged figure between them.

It was Chloe. Her wrists were tied tightly behind her back with industrial zip-ties, a strip of duct tape sealed tightly across her mouth, and tears cutting clean tracks through the dust on her cheeks. When she saw Emma, her eyes widened in terror, and she began to thrash against her captors, muffled cries escaping her throat.

"Chloe!" Emma screamed, rushing forward.

One of the guards stepped into her path, shoving her hard back onto the concrete floor. Emma gasped as the wind was knocked out of her lungs.

"Stay back, little girl," Viktor warned smoothly, walking closer and looking down at her with a predatory gaze. "Your sister is perfectly safe—for now. That entirely depends on how cooperative you decide to be."

"I did what you asked!" Emma gasped, pushing herself up onto her elbows. "I came here alone! Let her go!"

"You came here alone, yes," Viktor agreed, pacing slowly around her like a wolf circling a wounded deer. "But you didn't bring what Mr. Harrington actually wants. Where is the boy? And where is the old woman?"

"I don't know!" Emma lied fiercely. "They're back at the mansion with Mr. Moretti! I left before anyone could tell me where they were taking them!"

Viktor’s smile vanished instantly. His face hardened into a mask of brutal menace. He reached out, grabbing a handful of Emma's hair, and yanked her head back sharply.

"Don't lie to me," Viktor hissed in her ear. "You were right there in the dining room when the boy was brought in. You helped the old woman. Moretti trusts you. If you want your sister to leave this warehouse alive, you are going to pick up that phone by the door, call Moretti, and tell him you've been taken hostage at the old municipal yard on Fourth Street. You're going to lure him into a trap, Emma. And when Moretti arrives alone, Mr. Harrington takes back what belongs to him—and your sister goes free."

Emma stared up at him, tears stinging her eyes, but a fierce, stubborn defiance rose up inside her chest. She knew that if Luca walked into an ambush, not only would he die, but everyone she cared about—including little Daniel and Eleanor—would be hunted down and destroyed.

"I won't do it," Emma whispered, her voice steady despite the pain.

Viktor’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom. He drew a heavy hunting knife from his belt, the steel blade catching the dim overhead light. He pressed the flat side of the cold blade against Chloe's cheek, making the terrified girl sob violently behind her tape gag.

"Wrong answer, sweetheart," Viktor whispered, pressing the blade slightly closer to Chloe's skin. "Let's see if you're feeling quite so brave after your sister loses a finger."
