Chapter 8 - The Vault and the Final Betrayal

The hydraulic seals of the massive steel door hissed as they locked into place, sealing the vault completely.
Eleanor rushed to the door, pounding her fists against the cold, unyielding metal. "Vanessa! Open this door! You'll never get out of the city alive!"
Vanessa’s muffled, mocking laughter echoed through the intercom system near the door. "Oh, Eleanor. You still think you're in charge. Arthur’s men work for whoever pays them. And once I drain the accounts using his thumbprint from the terminal out here, they'll work for me. Enjoy the oxygen while it lasts."
The intercom clicked off.
Isabella dropped to the floor, her hands tearing at her hair in panic. "Maya. She's locked upstairs in the security office. If Vanessa finds her..."
"Vanessa doesn't know she's here," Eleanor said, trying to project a calm she didn't feel. She turned to look at Arthur’s lifeless body on the floor. "We have to find a manual override."
Emily stood frozen in the center of the room, clutching the cassette tape. The reality of their situation was crashing down on her. They had defeated the monster, only to be buried in his tomb.
"There is no manual override from the inside," Emily said quietly, her mother’s teachings bubbling to the surface of her memory. "My mother designed the security protocols for this vault eighteen years ago. It’s a dead-drop system. Only an external code or a timed release can open it."
"How long is the timer?" Isabella demanded, springing to her feet.
"Twelve hours," Emily replied, looking at the digital clock on the wall. "We have maybe forty-five minutes of breathable air left."
Eleanor leaned heavily against the safety deposit boxes, her breathing already growing shallow from the adrenaline and her shoulder wound. The mafia queen looked older in that moment than she ever had, the weight of the night finally crushing her.
"I survived hits, betrayals, and wars," Eleanor whispered, a bitter smile touching her lips. "And I'm going to die in a metal box because of my son's greedy wife."
"No," Emily said firmly. "We're not dying in here."
Emily walked over to Arthur’s body. She knelt beside him, ignoring the pool of blood, and began searching his pockets.
"What are you doing?" Isabella asked, watching the young waitress with a mix of awe and horror.
"Arthur didn't come down here to get locked in," Emily reasoned, pulling out a sleek, modern smartphone from his breast pocket. "He was a paranoid control freak. If he was entering a locked room, he had a backdoor."
She pressed the power button on the phone. It requested a six-digit passcode.
"It's locked," Eleanor sighed, sliding down the wall to sit on the floor. "And he's dead. We can't ask him."
"We don't need to," Emily said, her eyes flashing with a sudden, brilliant clarity. She looked at the blood-stained child's drawing sitting on the floor—the one Arthur had taken from Frank.
"Arthur was obsessed with his legacy," Emily muttered, pacing the small vault. "He was obsessed with his true heir. Me."
She typed in a date. Her own birthday.
Incorrect Passcode.
"Damn it," Emily cursed.
"Try Isabella's birthday," Eleanor suggested weakly. "Or Richard's."
"No," Emily said, shaking her head. "He didn't care about them. He cared about his masterpiece. His victory."
She looked down at the cassette tape in her hand. The tape Margaret had stolen. The tape that proved Arthur's guilt.
"My mother didn't just steal a tape," Emily realized aloud, the final puzzle piece snapping into place. "She stole his pride. The day she faked Isabella's death and disappeared with me... that was the day Arthur lost. And Arthur is the kind of man who never forgets his defeats."
Emily typed in a new six-digit code. The exact date of the yacht explosion. The day Margaret disappeared.
The screen flashed green. Unlocked.
Isabella gasped. "You got in."
Emily quickly opened an app labeled Vault Protocol. She hit a button marked Emergency Override.
Instantly, the heavy hydraulic locks on the steel door began to disengage with a loud, grinding hum. The wheel spun, and the door cracked open, fresh, cool air rushing into the stagnant vault.
Eleanor looked at Emily, genuine awe in her eyes. "You really are Margaret's daughter."
"Let's go," Emily said, helping the older woman to her feet.
They pushed the heavy door open and stepped out into the hallway.
Standing near the bank terminal, desperately trying to initiate a wire transfer on a laptop, was Vanessa.
When she heard the vault door open, she spun around, her face draining of all color.
Isabella didn't say a word. She walked forward, grabbed the heavy laptop from the desk, and smashed it directly across Vanessa's face.
Vanessa collapsed to the floor, unconscious.
"That was for Richard," Isabella spat, stepping over the treacherous woman.
Isabella sprinted up the stairs, leaving Emily and Eleanor behind. A minute later, she returned, holding a crying but completely safe Maya in her arms.
"I have her," Isabella wept, kissing her daughter's cheeks. "I have her."
Eleanor stood leaning on Emily for support, watching her daughter and granddaughter reunite. The fierce, untouchable mafia queen let out a long, ragged breath, the tears finally falling freely down her face.
"It's over," Eleanor whispered.
Emily looked at the cassette tape in her hand, the key to dismantling the corrupt empire Arthur had built. She looked at Eleanor, a woman who had done terrible things, but who had also spent her life protecting her family from a monster.
"It's not over yet," Emily said gently, holding the tape out to Eleanor. "You have a family to rebuild. And a city to clean up."
Eleanor looked at the tape, then at the twenty-two-year-old girl who had saved her life twice in one night.
May you like
She reached out, but she didn't take the tape. Instead, she placed her hand over Emily's, closing the young woman's fingers around the plastic casing.
"No, Emily," Eleanor smiled, a true, warm smile that reached her eyes. "We have a family to rebuild."
