Chapter 3 - The Bloodline and the Broken Glass

Richard staggered back as if he had been physically struck. "That's a lie! I am the heir! I am the only son!"

"You are the son of a rival capo," Eleanor said softly, the confession finally slipping from her lips after forty years of silence. "When your real father was killed, Arthur wanted to execute his entire family to wipe out the bloodline. I couldn't let him murder an infant. I took you. I raised you as my own to protect you from the man standing right in front of you."

Richard lowered his gun, his hands trembling violently. He looked at Arthur, the man he had worshipped, the man he thought was his father.

"Is it true?" Richard asked, his voice breaking.

"You were a useful pawn," Arthur dismissed him without a second glance. "A shield. As long as Eleanor thought you were the heir, she wouldn't look too closely at the businesses I was siphoning away. But now, you're just an obstacle."

Arthur nodded to Vanessa. "Kill him."

Vanessa didn't hesitate. She reached into her clutch for a small silver derringer, but Isabella was faster.

With the lethal speed that had made her Eleanor's most feared enforcer before her "death," Isabella snatched a shattered champagne flute from the table and lunged. She drove the jagged glass directly into Vanessa's hand.

Vanessa screamed, dropping the derringer.

"Go!" Isabella shouted, kicking the gun across the floor.

Emily grabbed Eleanor by the arm, pulling the older woman toward the heavy swinging doors of the kitchen. Richard stood frozen, completely broken by the revelation of his birth, as Arthur’s two armed assassins finally broke through the barricaded front entrance.

"Richard, move!" Eleanor screamed, reaching back for her adopted son.

Despite everything—the poisoned soup, the betrayal, the gun—she was still a mother. But Richard looked at the armed men pouring into the room, then at Arthur. A bitter, tragic resolve washed over his face.

He raised his gun, stepping between Eleanor and the assassins.

"Get her out of here," Richard ordered Isabella. He didn't look back. He just started firing.

Emily, Isabella, and Eleanor burst through the kitchen doors as gunfire erupted in the dining room behind them. The kitchen was in pure chaos. Pots were overturned, the staff had fled, and the alarms were blaring.

"The loading dock," Isabella instructed, her black dress blending into the shadows as the emergency lights flickered on. "I have a car waiting."

They ran past the stainless steel prep stations, but as they reached the rear exit, Emily stumbled to a halt.

Lying on the cold tile floor was Frank, the head of security. He was bleeding heavily from a chest wound, his radio crackling with static.

Eleanor dropped to her knees beside the man who had protected her for two decades. "Frank. Hold on. We'll get a medic."

"Too late, boss," Frank coughed, blood staining his white shirt. He reached out with a trembling hand, pressing a crumpled, blood-stained piece of paper into Eleanor's palm. "They... they already breached the vault. Arthur took it."

Eleanor opened the paper. Emily looked over her shoulder.

It wasn't a security readout or a vault inventory. It was a child's drawing in faded crayon. A picture of a little girl with dark hair, standing in front of a white house with a blue door.

Isabella choked back a sob at the sight of it.

"He found the safehouse," Isabella whispered in pure horror. "Mother, he knows where she is."

Emily looked at the scarred woman, utterly confused. "Where who is?"

Isabella turned to Emily, her eyes filled with a desperate, feral terror. "My daughter. And we have exactly twenty minutes to get to her before Arthur’s men do."
