Chapter 5 - The Ruby Necklace and the Crossfire

The living room of the Queens safehouse felt like a powder keg waiting for a spark.

Arthur stood in the doorway, his men fanning out with military precision, their rifles trained on Isabella and Eleanor. Richard stood near the kitchen, keeping Maya shielded against his side, his pistol aimed squarely at Arthur.

"I have the girl, Arthur," Richard said, his voice dripping with venom. "Just like Vanessa promised. Now, give me the access codes to the offshore accounts, and I'll let you take your revenge on Eleanor."

Arthur chuckled, a dry, rattling sound that grated against the silence. "You poor, stupid boy. You really thought Vanessa was negotiating for you? She’s my wife now. She sold you out the moment she realized you didn't have the Bellandi blood."

Richard’s face contorted in disbelief. "What?"

"She traded you for a seat at my table," Arthur said dismissively. He turned his attention to Eleanor, ignoring Richard entirely. His blue eyes zeroed in on Eleanor's throat.

"Take off the ruby necklace, Eleanor," Arthur demanded.

Eleanor instinctively reached for the heavy, antique ruby pendant resting against her collarbone. It was a family heirloom, passed down through generations of Bellandi matriarchs.

"The necklace has nothing to do with this," Eleanor said, standing tall despite the guns pointed at her.

"It has everything to do with this," Arthur snarled, his polite veneer finally cracking. "Margaret didn't just fake Isabella's death to push you to the throne. She stole my master ledger to ensure I could never reclaim it. But Margaret was clever. She knew a physical book could be burned. So she transferred the account numbers onto microdot film and hid it inside the backing of that ruby."

Emily stared at the necklace. Her mother’s dying words echoed in her mind: Protect the queen's heart. It holds the truth. She had thought it was a metaphor. It was literal.

"If you want the necklace, let my granddaughter go," Eleanor bargained, her voice steady.

"I don't make deals with dead women," Arthur said, raising his hand to signal his men.

But Isabella didn't wait for the order.

She threw herself sideways, firing her matte-black pistol not at Arthur, but at the chandelier above his head. The heavy crystal fixture crashed down, crushing one of the gunmen and plunging the entryway into chaos.

Gunfire erupted.

Emily hit the floor, scrambling behind an overturned sofa. Eleanor dove beside her, clutching the ruby necklace.

Richard panicked. The realization that he had been entirely discarded by Vanessa and Arthur shattered his last remaining shred of sanity. He raised his gun, firing wildly at Arthur’s men.

"Maya, run!" Richard screamed, shoving the little girl away.

Maya sprinted across the room, crying in terror. Isabella broke cover, sliding across the hardwood floor to catch her daughter, shielding the child with her own body as bullets shredded the drywall around them.

Arthur ducked behind the doorframe, cursing violently as his men returned fire. "Kill them! Get the necklace!"

Emily looked at Eleanor. The mafia queen was bleeding from a shard of glass in her shoulder, but her grip on the ruby pendant was absolute.

"Emily," Eleanor gasped over the deafening gunfire. "Take it."

Eleanor unclasped the necklace and shoved it into Emily's hands.

"I can't take this," Emily panicked.

"You have to," Eleanor ordered, her eyes burning with fierce determination. "If Arthur gets the accounts, he'll slaughter thousands. Break the ruby. Destroy the film."

Emily looked at the antique gemstone. She grabbed a heavy bronze bookend from the floor and slammed it down onto the ruby.

The red stone shattered.

But there was no microdot film inside.

There were no account numbers. No master ledger.

Instead, folded tightly inside the hollow gold backing of the pendant, was a tiny, faded photograph.

Emily pulled it out, her hands shaking violently. She stared at the picture, the breath leaving her lungs in a sharp gasp.

It was a picture of Margaret, holding a newborn baby. But Margaret wasn't smiling. She looked terrified. And standing next to her, looking down at the baby with a look of pure, unadulterated possession, was Arthur.

Written on the back in Arthur’s handwriting: My true heir. Emily.

Emily looked up, the world spinning around her.

"I'm his daughter?" Emily whispered.

Arthur’s voice cut through the fading gunfire. "Cease fire!" he bellowed.

The shooting stopped. The silence was ringing, suffocating.

Arthur stepped into the ruined living room, leaning heavily on his cane, a twisted smile on his face.

"Margaret was a thief, but she was a beautiful thief," Arthur said softly, looking directly at Emily. "When she found out she was pregnant with my child, she knew Eleanor would kill her. So she ran. She faked Isabella's death to distract the family, took my money, and disappeared to raise you in the shadows."

He held out his hand to the terrified twenty-two-year-old waitress.

"I didn't come here for Eleanor, Emily," Arthur said, the truth finally revealed. "I came here for you. You are the true Bellandi heir."
