Chapter 6 - The Golden Rosary and the Gasoline

The revelation paralyzed the room. Emily stared at Arthur, the monster who had ordered murders, rigged yachts, and terrorized the city for decades, claiming to be her father.
"No," Emily backed away, clutching the shattered ruby pendant and the photograph. "My father was a mechanic. He died when I was five."
"A lie Margaret told you to keep you complacent," Arthur said, taking a slow step forward. "Look at me, Emily. You have my eyes. You have my ruthlessness. You didn't just stop Eleanor from eating poisoned soup today because you're a good waitress. You did it because you knew exactly what Richard was planning, didn't you?"
Emily froze.
Eleanor turned to look at Emily, betrayal flashing in her sharp eyes. "What is he talking about?"
Emily swallowed hard, her hands trembling. "I... I found a gold rosary in Richard’s coat when I hung it up in the cloakroom. It belonged to the chef who prepared your soup. The chef Richard paid off to look the other way when he added the shellfish stock."
"You knew," Richard gasped from the corner of the room, clutching a bleeding bullet wound in his side. "You saw the rosary and you knew I had flipped the kitchen."
"But she didn't warn you, Eleanor, did she?" Arthur smiled wickedly. "She waited until the spoon was at your lips. She waited for the perfect dramatic moment to intervene, to win your trust. Margaret trained you well, Emily. She raised a queen."
"Shut up!" Emily screamed, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. "I didn't want this! I just wanted to save her!"
"You can't escape your blood, my dear," Arthur said, extending his hand again. "Come with me. Let these relics die in the past. We will rebuild the empire together."
Emily looked at the hand offered to her. She looked at Eleanor, bleeding on the floor. She looked at Isabella, clutching her terrified daughter, Maya. And she looked at Richard, the adopted son who had lost everything for a lie.
She reached into her pocket. Her fingers brushed against the brass safety deposit key her mother had given her.
"My mother didn't raise a queen," Emily said, her voice dropping to a deadly calm. "She raised a survivor."
Emily didn't take Arthur’s hand. Instead, she threw the brass key as hard as she could into the darkness of the hallway.
Arthur’s eyes instinctively followed the glint of the metal, his greed overpowering his focus. "Get it!" he barked to his men.
In that split second of distraction, Richard made his final move.
The disgraced, adopted son let out a feral roar, charging forward with his empty pistol. He didn't aim at Arthur. He tackled Arthur’s lead gunman, driving him backward into the hallway.
"Get out!" Richard screamed to Eleanor. "Run!"
"Richard, no!" Eleanor cried, reaching out for him.
The other gunmen opened fire, tearing into Richard’s back. He collapsed to the floor, coughing blood, but he reached up and grabbed the heavy gas canister one of the men had brought in to burn the safehouse.
With a defiant, bloody smile, Richard pulled the pin on a flare from his jacket pocket and slammed it into the leaking gas canister.
"For the family," Richard whispered.
The explosion tore through the front of the safehouse, a massive fireball consuming the entryway and throwing Arthur and his men backward into the street.
Isabella grabbed Maya, hauling her up. "Out the back! Now!"
Emily grabbed Eleanor, pulling the stunned mafia queen to her feet. They scrambled through the kitchen, bursting out the back door into the narrow alleyway just as the roof of the safehouse began to collapse in a shower of sparks and flame.
They ran blindly through the rain, putting three blocks between them and the burning house before Isabella finally pulled them into a deserted, dimly lit laundromat.
Eleanor sank against the washing machines, weeping openly for the son she had just watched die. "He saved us. After everything... he saved us."
Isabella held Maya tightly, kissing the top of her daughter's head over and over.
Emily stood near the window, watching the distant glow of the fire, the photograph of her mother and Arthur burning a hole in her pocket.
"Arthur survived the blast," Isabella said grimly, checking her phone. "My street contacts are blowing up. He’s regrouping. He’s heading for the Central Bellandi Vault at the First Manhattan Bank."
"The vault?" Eleanor wiped her face, her eyes hardening. "Why? The ledger isn't there."
"Because the ledger never existed," Emily said quietly, turning to face them. She pulled the brass key from her shoe—she had thrown a decoy coin in the safehouse, not the key.
"My mother didn't just steal money," Emily revealed, her voice steady. "She stole Arthur’s confession tapes. The ones detailing every politician and judge he bought, every murder he ordered. They're in the deposit box. If he destroys them, he’s untouchable. If we get them... he goes to federal prison for the rest of his life."

Eleanor looked at the twenty-two-year-old girl who shared the blood of her greatest enemy.
"Then we get there first," Eleanor said, rising to her feet, the Queen reclaiming her crown. "Let's finish this."
