Chapter 9 - THE NEW LEGACY

Two weeks later, the Moretti estate was quiet.

The burnt library was sealed off for renovations. The shattered marble in the ballroom had been replaced.

Clara was sitting in a federal maximum-security prison, facing multiple life sentences for domestic terrorism and attempted murder. Paul, the lawyer, had been entered into witness protection with his family after providing a full confession regarding the blackmail.

Vincent, who had survived the sniper's bullet, was recovering in a private hospital under heavy guard. Dominic had visited him once, forgiving his brother, but permanently cutting him out of the family business.

The business.

Dominic sat at his new desk in the sunroom, watching the afternoon light filter through the trees. He signed his name at the bottom of a thick stack of legal documents.

He set the pen down.

It was done.

He had formally stepped down as the head of the Moretti organization. He had handed control over to a trusted council of legitimate businessmen, transitioning the family's assets entirely into legal real estate and philanthropy.

He was out.

The door opened softly.

Sophia walked in, holding a tray with two cups of coffee. She wore a simple, elegant dress, the bandage on her forehead reduced to a small, fading scar.

"You signed them," she said gently, placing the tray on the desk.

"I did," Dominic smiled, a genuine, tired smile that reached his eyes for the first time in years. "Ethan won't inherit a mafia empire. He'll inherit a real estate firm. And a clean name."

"He's proud of you, Dominic. We all are."

Through the French doors, they could see the backyard.

Ethan and Lily were running across the manicured lawn, chasing a golden retriever puppy Dominic had bought for them a week ago. Ethan was laughing, a carefree, joyous sound. Lily stumbled, and Ethan immediately stopped, helping her up and dusting off her dress like a protective older brother.

Dominic walked over to the window, watching them.

He turned to Sophia. They had been through hell together. She had risked her life to save his son. She had proven her loyalty, her bravery, and her pure heart.

"Sophia," Dominic said softly. "I told you I'd set you up anywhere you wanted to go. A house in the suburbs. A new job. Financial security for Lily's future."

Sophia looked down at her hands, a small, sad smile playing on her lips. "I know. And I appreciate it, Dominic."

"But I was hoping," Dominic took a step closer, his voice vulnerable, "that you wouldn't want to go anywhere at all."

Sophia looked up, her eyes wide.

Dominic reached out, gently taking her hand. "You're my family now. Both of you. If you'll stay."

Sophia's eyes filled with tears. She didn't say a word. She just stepped forward and wrapped her arms around his waist, resting her head against his chest.

Dominic held her tight, looking out the window at the two children playing in the sun.

The ghosts of the past were finally gone. The poison had been drawn out.

And for the first time in his life, Dominic Moretti wasn't a boss.

He was just a father. And a man who was finally home.
