Chapter 8 - THE SACRIFICE

Flames erupted instantly, a roaring wall of fire that consumed the back half of the panic room.

Clara laughed, stepping backward into a hidden escape tunnel that Dominic didn't even know existed. She slammed the secondary grate shut, locking him inside the burning room.

"The library code is her birthday, Dominic!" Clara yelled through the steel grate. "Better hurry!"

The heat was suffocating. Smoke rapidly filled the bunker.

Dominic didn't hesitate. He grabbed his coat, wrapped it around Sophia's unconscious body, and hauled her over his shoulder. He fought his way through the wall of smoke, punching the emergency release on the main door.

He dragged Sophia into the fresh air of the hallway, coughing violently.

"Marco!" Dominic roared into his radio. "Medical to the basement! Library! Now!"

Dominic sprinted up the stairs, his lungs burning. He reached the heavy mahogany doors of the library. They were magnetically locked.

He punched in Elena's birthday. 0-8-1-4.

Red light. Denied.

"Dad!" Ethan's muffled voice cried out from inside. "It's getting hot in here!"

"I'm here, Ethan! Stand back!"

Dominic tried the code again. Denied.

Clara had lied.

Dominic took several steps back. He lowered his shoulder and charged the doors with every ounce of strength he possessed. The wood splintered, but the magnetic lock held firm.

Suddenly, a hand grabbed his shoulder.

It was Sophia.

She was bleeding, swaying on her feet, but her eyes were fierce. She held a heavy fire axe retrieved from the hallway emergency glass.

"Move," she gasped.

Sophia swung the axe with terrifying force, burying it directly into the electronic keypad panel. Sparks flew. The magnetic lock short-circuited with a loud pop.

Dominic kicked the doors open.

Ethan and Lily were huddled together under a massive oak desk, terrified but unharmed.

Dominic rushed forward, pulling his son into his arms, crushing him against his chest. "I've got you. I've got you."

Sophia fell to her knees, weeping as she pulled Lily into a desperate embrace.

The nightmare was over.

But as Dominic carried his son out of the library, Marco came running down the hall, flanked by heavily armed guards.

"Boss," Marco breathed heavily. "We caught her. Clara was trying to escape through the west gate. The shadow man is dead. The bomb squad neutralized Paul's vest."

Dominic looked at the destruction of his home. At the soot on his son's face. At Sophia, holding her daughter in a world she never asked to be a part of.

He looked at Marco.

"Don't bring her to the basement," Dominic said quietly. "Call the FBI. Give them Clara. Give them the evidence on the shadow man."

Marco stared in shock. "Boss... we don't involve the feds. We handle it in-house."

"Not anymore," Dominic said.
