Chapter 2 - THE SILVER CUFFLINK

Dominic’s voice echoed through the cavernous ballroom, shaking the crystal chandeliers.
"LOCK THE DOORS! NO ONE LEAVES!"
Panic erupted. Wealthy guests, hardened associates, and politicians scrambled away from the shattered cake. The heavy oak doors slammed shut, guarded by men in tailored suits pulling weapons from their jackets.
Dominic didn’t look at them. His dark eyes remained fixed on three-year-old Lily.
The little girl was trembling, hiding her face in her mother’s skirt. Sophia, the estate’s head event coordinator, wrapped her arms protectively around her daughter. She was breathing hard, her eyes darting between Dominic and the ruined frosting on the marble floor.
"Mr. Moretti, please," Sophia whispered. "She’s just a child. She doesn't know what she's saying."
"She knows exactly what she saw," Dominic said.
His voice was terrifyingly calm. He motioned for his head of security, a towering man named Marco.
"Get the testing kit. Now."
Within seconds, a small vial of chemical solution was dropped onto the smeared white frosting. The crowd held its collective breath. The liquid bubbled. Then, it turned a violent, sickening shade of black.
Strychnine.
A lethal dose.
Ethan, eight years old and wearing a tiny tuxedo, backed away until he hit his father's leg. "Dad... they tried to hurt me?"
Dominic placed a heavy, reassuring hand on his son's shoulder. "I won't let them, Ethan. I promise."
He turned his gaze toward the service corridor. The one place that was supposed to be completely sterile. Only Dominic's most trusted inner circle had clearance to walk through those doors today.
"Marco," Dominic growled. "You swore that hallway was locked."
"It was, Boss," Marco said, his face pale. "I held the key myself. Two guards at the door. Nobody got past them."
Dominic didn't wait for excuses. He stalked past the shattered cake and kicked open the swinging doors to the kitchen.
The stainless steel room was completely empty. The catering staff had been moved out thirty minutes ago for the cake presentation. But something was wrong. A large metal mixing bowl sat in the center island, a silver spatula tossed carelessly beside it.
Dominic approached the bowl.
Buried deep in the residual white frosting, something caught the overhead light. A small, metallic gleam.
He reached into the thick sugar and pulled it out.
It was a silver cufflink, custom-engraved with a roaring lion.
Marco gasped from the doorway. "Boss... that’s Silvio’s cufflink."
Dominic stared at the silver lion, the blood roaring in his ears. Silvio was his underboss. His oldest friend. The man who had stood beside him at his wedding.
There was only one problem.
Silvio had been dead for six months.
"Bring me Sophia," Dominic ordered, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "And bring the girl."
Because if Silvio was dead, whoever planted this cufflink was sending a very specific message. And they had left something else behind.

Underneath the mixing bowl, a folded piece of paper protruded. Dominic pulled it out.
It was a photograph.
