Chapter 8 - THE WOODEN ROSARY

Rafael moved with a quiet, desperate speed that defied his age.
He didn't have a gun. He had a heavy piece of steel rebar he had picked up from the debris.
Rossi didn't hear him over the ringing echoes of the gunfire. Just as Rossi's thumb hovered over the red button of the detonator, Rafael swung the steel bar with everything he had, striking Rossi across the back of the knees.
Rossi cried out, his legs buckling. He collapsed onto the dusty floor, the detonator flying from his hand and skittering across the concrete.
Dario lunged forward, kicking Rossi's weapon away and pinning the crime boss to the ground.
I scrambled out from behind the bricks and dove for the detonator, scooping it up before one of Rossi's remaining guards could reach it. My hands were shaking so violently I nearly dropped it, but I held the red button safely away from my palm.
"Hold your fire!" Dario roared, pressing the barrel of his gun to the back of Rossi's head. "It's over!"
Seeing their boss pinned and defeated, Rossi's remaining guards slowly lowered their weapons, raising their hands in surrender. Dario's men quickly moved in, stripping them of their guns and forcing them to their knees.
The sudden silence in the ruined mansion was deafening, broken only by the sound of the rain lashing against the exposed beams.
Rafael dropped the steel rebar, his chest heaving. He looked down at Rossi, his eyes filled with a lifetime of sorrow.
"You took my son," Rafael whispered in Spanish. "You tried to take my daughter. You will not take anyone else."
From behind a concrete pillar, Camilla slowly stepped out.
She looked entirely broken. The elegant, commanding woman from the engagement dinner was gone, replaced by a shivering, terrified ghost. She stared at Rossi, the man she had believed would give her an empire, who had ordered her execution without a second thought.
Then, she looked at Rafael. The father who had raised her. The father who had just risked his life to save the people she had tried to kill.
"Dad," Camilla choked out, dropping her gun to the floor. She took a step toward him, tears washing through the dust on her face. "I'm... I'm so sorry. He lied to me. He used me."
Rafael looked at her. The love in his eyes was still there—a father's love never truly dies—but it was fractured beyond repair.
"I know," Rafael said softly. "But you chose him, Camilla. You chose his lies over Miguel's life."
"I can fix it," Camilla pleaded, taking another step. "Dario, I can testify. I can give you all of Rossi's ledgers. We can put him away forever."
Dario didn't look at her. He kept his gun on Rossi. "You're done, Camilla. There is no 'we' anymore."
Suddenly, Rossi let out a wet, mocking laugh from the floor.
"You think this is a victory?" Rossi wheezed, looking up at Dario. "You think you're better than me, Moretti? You're a monster, just like your father. And this girl," he sneered, looking at Camilla, "she has my blood. She's rotten to the core."
With a sudden, violent burst of adrenaline, Rossi twisted his body, drawing a small backup pistol he had concealed in his ankle holster.
He didn't aim at Dario. He aimed directly at Camilla.
"If I can't have her, no one will," Rossi snarled.
He pulled the trigger.
Bang!
Camilla screamed, throwing her hands up.
But she didn't fall.
Rafael had thrown himself into the line of fire. The bullet struck him in the chest.
"No!" I screamed, dropping the detonator and running toward them.
Rafael collapsed backward. As he fell, his hand clutched his chest, and the wooden rosary he always wore around his neck snapped. The small wooden beads scattered across the concrete floor like raindrops, bouncing into the dark corners of the ruined hall.
Dario fired twice. Rossi's body jerked, and the crime boss lay still, dead on the floor.
"Dad!" Camilla shrieked, falling to her knees beside Rafael. She pressed her hands frantically against his bleeding chest, her fingers stained crimson. "Dad, please! Stay with me! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!"
I slid to my knees beside them, pressing my apron against the wound to stem the bleeding. Rafael's breathing was shallow, his eyes fluttering.
"Abuelo?" Sofia cried, running over and clutching his hand.
Rafael turned his head weakly, looking past Camilla's sobbing face to focus on the little girl. He managed a faint, peaceful smile.
"Don't lose the light, little one," Rafael whispered.
His eyes closed, and his head rolled to the side.

"No!" Camilla wailed, burying her face in his chest. "Don't leave me!"
Dario stood over them, his gun lowered, the flashing red and blue lights of approaching police sirens finally breaking through the darkness outside.
