Chapter 4 - THE VINTAGE WATCH

Screams erupted from the remaining staff as Daniel’s weapon cleared his holster.
The heavy steel of the gun gleamed under the chandeliers. Daniel didn't aim at Dario. He knew Dario’s personal guards were already moving, their hands reaching for their own weapons. Instead, Daniel grabbed the nearest piece of leverage he could find.
He lunged and grabbed Camilla by the arm, yanking her back against his chest and pressing the barrel of the gun directly to her temple.
"Nobody moves!" Daniel roared, his voice echoing violently off the vaulted ceiling. "Drop the guns, or I paint this beautiful dress red!"
Camilla shrieked, terrified tears instantly streaming down her face. "Dario! Help me! Please!"
"Put it down, Daniel," Dario said calmly, though the fury radiating from him was palpable. His guards froze, their weapons drawn but lowered, waiting for his command. "You pull that trigger, you don't make it to the front door."
I didn't wait to see how it played out. I grabbed Sofia and dragged her under the heavy mahogany dining table, shielding her small body with my own. My heart was pounding so hard it hurt my ribs. I clamped my hand gently over Sofia’s mouth to keep her from crying out.
From beneath the draped tablecloth, I could see their shoes. Daniel’s heavy leather boots, Camilla’s silver heels, Dario’s polished oxfords standing perfectly still.
"Toss the key, Mr. Moretti," Daniel demanded, his voice tight with adrenaline. "And the film. Slide them across the floor. Now."
"What is at my mother's house, Daniel?" Dario asked, refusing to break eye contact. "What are you hiding that was worth killing this man's son?"
"Your mother's house is a goldmine," Daniel sneered. "You were just going to turn it into a charity hospital. What a waste. The basement connects to the old smuggling tunnels under the river. I’ve been running product through there for six months. Miguel figured it out. He wanted a cut. He was a rat."
"He wasn't a rat!" Rafael yelled from across the room. "He was a good man!"
"He's a dead man!" Daniel shouted back. "The key, Dario! Now!"
Camilla sobbed, her whole body shaking. "Please, Dario, just give it to him! He's crazy!"
I watched Daniel’s feet shift as he tightened his grip on Camilla. As he moved, his left arm dropped slightly, and the cuff of his suit jacket pulled back.
Even from beneath the table, the distinct gleam of the watch on his wrist caught the light. It was a vintage Patek Philippe. The leather strap was custom-stitched, the gold casing engraved with a specific pattern.
I knew that watch.
Every Tuesday, as part of my cleaning duties, I polished the glass of Dario’s display cases in his private study. Two months ago, Dario had reported that exact watch stolen from his personal safe. He had fired three maids over it.
The pieces clicked together in my mind with terrifying clarity. Daniel didn't have access to the inner safe. Only Dario did.
And Camilla.
"He didn't steal it," I said.
My voice was quiet, but in the tense silence of the room, it carried perfectly.
I crawled out from under the table, keeping myself low but making sure I was seen.
"Maya, get back down," Dario ordered, his eyes darting to me.
"Look at his wrist, Mr. Moretti," I said, pointing directly at Daniel. My hands were shaking, but I couldn't stop now. "Look at the watch. That's your grandfather's Patek Philippe. The one that went missing two months ago."
Daniel instinctively pulled his arm back, trying to cover the watch, but it was too late. Dario saw it.
"He couldn't have stolen that," I continued, staring directly into Camilla’s panicked eyes. "Daniel doesn't have the combination to your safe. But I saw Camilla standing in front of it the day before you reported the watch missing."
The tears on Camilla’s face vanished instantly.
The helpless, terrified victim act evaporated. Her posture straightened, and the hysterical sobbing stopped cold. She didn't look like a hostage anymore. She looked like a cornered predator.
"Is that true, Camilla?" Dario asked, his voice a lethal whisper.
Camilla let out a bitter, ugly laugh.
May you like
"He was always going to find out, Daniel," Camilla sneered, not at Dario, but at the man holding the gun to her head. "You sloppy idiot."
And then, Camilla reached up, grabbed Daniel’s gun hand, and smoothly pulled the weapon away from her own head.
