Chapter 5 - THE RED SILK SCARF

The entire room seemed to hold its breath.

Camilla didn't cower. She stepped away from Daniel, smoothing the wrinkles out of her elegant engagement dress as if she had just tripped on a rug. She looked at Dario, her eyes devoid of the warmth she had faked for the past year.

"You gave him my grandfather's watch?" Dario asked. The betrayal in his voice wasn't explosive; it was a cold, devastating hollow.

"I had to pay him for his silence somehow," Camilla said, shrugging off the treason. "Your security chief has very expensive tastes, Dario. And he was the only one who could get rid of my brother without asking too many questions."

Rafael let out a strangled cry. He lunged forward, but two of Dario’s guards caught him, holding him back for his own safety.

"You killed Miguel?" Rafael screamed, tears streaming down his weathered face. "Your own flesh and blood?"

"He wasn't my blood," Camilla snapped, the venom in her voice startling everyone. She glared at Rafael. "You think I didn't know? You think I didn't find the papers you kept hidden in the floorboards? I know who my real father is."

My mind raced. Adopted. Camilla was adopted.

Daniel realized the power dynamic had completely shifted. He had lost his hostage, and Dario’s guards were closing in. In a desperate move, Daniel aimed his gun blindly toward the guards and fired.

Bang!

The gunshot shattered a massive mirror on the wall. Glass rained down. Dario’s men returned fire, but Daniel was already moving. He grabbed a heavy dining chair and hurled it through the French windows, shattering the glass, and dove out into the dark, rainy gardens.

"Let him go!" Dario shouted as his men moved to pursue. "Secure the room. Nobody touches Camilla."

Camilla stood perfectly still as the guards surrounded her. She wasn't afraid. She looked triumphant.

I crawled back under the table and pulled Sofia into my arms, rocking her gently as she cried silently into my shoulder.

"Take the girl to the kitchen, Maya," Dario ordered without looking at me. "Keep her safe."

"No," Rafael pleaded, pulling away from the guards. "I need to know. Why did Miguel die?"

Dario looked down at the roll of film in his hand. The brass key was already safely in his pocket. "We develop the film. Right now."

Dario had a vintage darkroom in the basement of the mansion. It was his private sanctuary. Ten minutes later, I found myself standing in the red glow of the safelights, holding Sofia’s hand while Dario expertly ran the film through the chemical baths. Rafael stood beside him, breathing heavily.

The pungent smell of developer fluid filled the small room.

Dario used tongs to lift the first photograph out of the bath and hung it on the line.

As the image materialized, the truth of Camilla’s betrayal became undeniable.

It wasn't a picture of the smuggling operation. It was a photograph of Camilla sitting in a dimly lit restaurant. She was sliding a thick manila folder across the table to an older man.

The man was facing the camera. He had a distinct, jagged scar across his jaw and was wearing a luxurious red silk scarf tucked into his overcoat.

I gasped. Even as a maid, I knew the faces of the families who ran the city. You had to know them to survive.

"Lorenzo Rossi," Dario whispered, his voice trembling with a rage so profound it seemed to lower the temperature in the room.

Rossi was the head of the rival syndicate. The man who had orchestrated the car bombing that killed Dario’s father fifteen years ago.

"She was feeding him my internal ledgers," Dario realized, looking at the manila folder in the photo. "She was selling me out to my father's killer."

Rafael stared at the photograph, his hand covering his mouth. "The scarf," he choked out.

"What about it, Rafael?" Dario asked.

"The night I brought Camilla home," Rafael wept, the decades-old secret finally breaking out of him. "She was just a baby. Her mother was dead. I took her to save her from the streets. But she was wrapped in a blanket... and a red silk scarf."
