THE MAID’S TRANSLATION / Chapter 2 / 8

Chapter 3 - THE SILVER FLASHLIGHT

"Hey, sweetheart," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a sickeningly sweet register as he took a long stride toward the doorway. "You shouldn't be wandering around the house."

My instincts fired before my brain could catch up. I didn't care that I was just a maid. I stepped directly into Daniel’s path, putting my body between the hulking security chief and the little girl.

"Excuse me," Daniel growled, his pleasant facade slipping to reveal the violent man beneath. "Move, Maya."

"Stop right there, Daniel," Dario’s voice cracked like thunder across the dining room.

Dario stood up. The sheer presence of the man commanded absolute obedience. He walked around the long table, his eyes fixed on his security chief. "Step away from the girl."

Daniel hesitated, his jaw clenching, but he took a step back.

I knelt down in front of Sofia. She was trembling, her small fingers gripping the heavy silver flashlight so tightly her knuckles were white.

"Hi, Sofia," I whispered in Spanish, offering her a gentle smile. "My name is Maya. Are you okay?"

She nodded slowly, looking past me to her grandfather. Rafael rushed forward, dropping to his knees and wrapping his arms around her.

"I told you to stay in the car with my neighbor," Rafael said, his voice thick with tears.

"It was cold," Sofia whispered. "And I wanted to bring daddy’s light. He said to never lose the light."

Rafael looked up at Dario, the fierce protectiveness of a grandfather burning in his eyes. "Someone broke into our apartment this morning. They tore the place apart. I couldn't leave her at home. I had to bring her."

Dario’s gaze shifted to Daniel, then to Camilla. The engagement dinner was officially dead. The wealthy guests were hastily excusing themselves, slipping out the side doors to avoid being caught in the crossfire of mafia business.

"Daniel," Dario said softly. "Did you break into Rafael’s home?"

"Of course not," Daniel lied, though the vein pulsing in his neck told a different story. "The old man is paranoid. And the kid is holding stolen property. That flashlight belongs to the construction site. Miguel stole it before he fell from the scaffolding."

I looked down at the flashlight in Sofia’s hands. It was heavy, industrial, made of thick aluminum. But there was something wrong with it. As a maid, I spent my days cleaning, handling objects, noticing when things were out of place. The weight of the flashlight was uneven. It was completely bottom-heavy.

"May I see it, Sofia?" I asked gently.

She looked at her grandfather, who nodded. She handed it to me.

It felt like a brick. I turned it over in my hands. The bottom cap wasn't just screwed on; it had a slight, almost invisible seam.

"It’s not just a flashlight," I said aloud.

I gripped the base and twisted hard. The metal ground together, and the bottom cap popped off.

It was hollowed out.

I tipped it over into my palm. A tiny roll of camera film fell out, followed by a heavy, ornate brass key.

The key was old, tarnished, with a distinct crest engraved on the bow—a shield with a wolf.

Dario walked over, his eyes locked on the brass key. He reached out and picked it up. His face, usually an impenetrable fortress, showed a flash of genuine shock.

"Where did Miguel get this?" Dario asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

"I don't know," Rafael said. "What is it?"

"It’s the key to the private archives at my mother's estate," Dario replied, staring at the metal.

Daniel took a step backward, his hand inching toward his suit jacket. "Boss, the guy was a thief. He was trying to rob you."

"That’s impossible," Dario said, looking up at Daniel with a deadly stillness. "Because you told me my mother’s estate was completely demolished a month ago. You showed me the leveled ground yourself."

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he drew his gun.
