Chapter 7 - THE BLACK LEDGER

"Give that to me, Victoria," Arthur demanded, taking a menacing step toward her. His cultured facade was crumbling, revealing the ruthless predator beneath.

Victoria scrambled backward on the marble floor, her silk dress catching under her knees. She clutched the black flash drive to her chest, her eyes darting between Arthur, Ethan, and Rosa.

"You lied to me," Victoria hissed at Arthur. "You told my father the RM-73 formula was complete. You told us it was safe. We invested two hundred million dollars into the manufacturing plants! If we launch a drug that kills people, the FDA won't just shut us down—they'll put my father in prison for the rest of his life. My family will be destroyed."

"It's a calculated risk," Arthur dismissed coldly. "We adjust the formula post-launch. We control the narrative. Give me the drive, Victoria. The data she holds is the missing piece."

"No!" Victoria screamed, scrambling to her feet. She looked at Ethan, a frantic, desperate realization washing over her face. "Ethan. Listen to me. He isn't just manipulating you. He's been bleeding your company dry."

Ethan kept the recording pen firmly in his hand, keeping his body positioned between Rosa and the chaos. "What are you talking about?"

Victoria swallowed hard, her manicured hands shaking. "The debt my father holds over Caldwell Enterprises? Arthur facilitated it. He embezzled millions from your offshore accounts over the last four years, intentionally creating cash flow problems so my father could swoop in and 'save' you. He manufactured the crisis to force the merger. He gets fifty percent of Haynes Industries once we marry."

Arthur’s face contorted with rage. He raised his heavy gold-headed cane and swung it violently at Victoria.

"Watch out!" Rosa screamed.

Ethan lunged. He didn't care about Victoria, but he wouldn't let a man be beaten in his home. Ethan caught the heavy wooden shaft of the cane mid-swing. The impact sent a shockwave up Ethan’s arm, but he held firm.

With a brutal twist, Ethan wrenched the cane out of Arthur’s grip and threw it across the room. It shattered against a marble pillar.

"Don't move," Ethan warned, stepping into Arthur’s space, towering over the older man. The billionaire who had built an empire from nothing was fully awake now. "You are done, Arthur. Your ghost story ends today."

Arthur sneered, though fear finally flickered in his eyes. "You have a recording, Ethan. But I have the board of directors. I have the judges in my pocket. You destroy me, I take the company down with me."

Victoria, breathing heavily, looked at the black flash drive in her hand. She looked at Rosa, who was holding Lily tight against her shoulder. For a fraction of a second, the arrogant, entitled heiress saw the damage she had caused. She saw the little girl who almost choked. She saw the brilliant woman whose life she had helped ruin.

Self-preservation was Victoria's strongest instinct. And right now, the winning side had shifted.

Victoria reached into her designer handbag. She pulled out a small, leather-bound black ledger book.

"I never trusted you, Arthur," Victoria said, her voice shaking but resolute. She held the book out to Ethan. "This is the shadow ledger. It tracks every dollar Arthur embezzled from your company. Every judge he bribed. Every offshore account he used to hide the money. And it proves my father didn't know about the embezzlement."

Arthur lunged for the book. "You stupid, arrogant girl—"

Ethan shoved Arthur back hard, sending the older man stumbling onto the piano bench. Ethan took the ledger from Victoria with his left hand, holding the recording pen in his right.

"Why are you giving me this?" Ethan asked, his eyes locked on his former fiancée.

"Because I want immunity," Victoria said, her chin lifting slightly, attempting to reclaim a fraction of her dignity. "You use this to destroy Arthur. You clear the debt my father holds over you. But you leave my family out of the press. We walk away. Quietly. The wedding is canceled due to irreconcilable differences."

Ethan looked at the ledger. He looked at Rosa. The woman he loved had been put through hell because of these people.

"You don't get to dictate terms," Rosa spoke up. Her voice wasn't loud, but it commanded the room. She stepped out from behind Ethan, Lily resting on her hip. "Your family bought my father's medical debt to force me to abandon my life. You stole my research. You don't walk away clean, Victoria. The formula on this flash drive belongs to me. It will be patented under my name. Haynes Industries will publicly issue a formal apology to Columbia University for the data breach, and you will fully fund the university's biochemistry department for the next ten years. Or I take the flash drive to the New York Times."

Victoria stared at the maid in the cheap uniform. She saw the fire in Rosa’s eyes and realized she had entirely underestimated her.

"Fine," Victoria swallowed bitterly. "You win."

She tossed the black flash drive onto the piano. It landed next to the Caldwell family engagement ring, which she slipped off her finger and left behind. Without looking at any of them again, Victoria turned and walked out of the east parlor.

Arthur sat on the piano bench, suddenly looking very old, and very fragile.

"You can't do this, Ethan," Arthur whispered. "I made you."

"No," Ethan said softly, slipping the ledger and the pen into his pocket. "You tried to break me. Security!"

Within seconds, two massive security guards entered the parlor.

"Escort Mr. Vance to the front gates," Ethan ordered without looking at him. "Call the police. Tell them we have a trespasser who has been legally dead for four years. I'm sure they'll be fascinated to hear his story."

As the guards dragged a protesting Arthur out of the room, silence finally fell over the east parlor.

Ethan turned around. Rosa was standing by the piano, trembling violently as the adrenaline left her body. Lily was asleep on her shoulder, exhausted by the chaos.

Ethan took a slow, hesitant step toward them. The corporate war was over. But the hardest part was just beginning.

"Rosa..." Ethan started, his voice thick with unshed tears.

Suddenly, the massive chandelier above them flickered. Once. Twice.

And then, the entire Caldwell estate plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

From the hallway outside the parlor, the heavy, unmistakable sound of combat boots echoed against the marble floor. And they were walking toward the parlor doors.
