Chapter 4 - THE PRICE OF A LIFE

"Stop," Rosa whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of a humiliation so deep it burned. "Please, Victoria. Don't."
Lily tugged on Rosa’s apron, her small face twisted in confusion. "Mama crying?"
"I'm okay, baby," Rosa choked out, kneeling quickly to press a kiss to Lily's dark curls. She stood back up, facing Ethan.
Ethan wasn't looking at Victoria anymore. His eyes were locked on Rosa, filled with a desperate need to understand the nightmare unraveling in front of him. "Rosa. Look at me. What is she talking about?"
Victoria laughed, a dry, hollow sound. "She’s not going to tell you, Ethan. Because she’s ashamed. So I will." Victoria held up the plastic medical bracelet. "Four years ago, while you were in a coma, Rosa’s father was dying of stage four lymphoma. The experimental treatment he needed was denied by his insurance. He had weeks to live."
Rosa closed her eyes, the memory hitting her like a physical blow. The sterile smell of the ICU. The agonizing beep of the monitors. The sheer, suffocating terror of watching her father fade away.
"My father," Victoria continued, pacing slowly across the Persian rug, "owns the private equity firm that controls that hospital network. He offered Rosa a choice. Drop out of the Columbia biochemistry program. Disappear from your life permanently. Never attempt to contact you. In exchange, her father’s medical debt would vanish, and the treatments would be fully funded."
Ethan staggered back slightly, his hip hitting the edge of the piano. He looked at Rosa, his heart breaking into a thousand jagged pieces. "You traded your future... you traded us... to save your dad?"
"I didn't have a choice!" Rosa finally broke, a sob tearing through her throat. "They came to me in the waiting room, Ethan! They had the paperwork drawn up. They showed me pictures of you unconscious in the hospital. They said if I didn't sign, my father would be discharged that afternoon. He would have died in our apartment."
Ethan’s hands clenched into fists so tight his knuckles turned white. He looked at Victoria, his voice a low, lethal growl. "You blackmailed a desperate girl. You held her father's life hostage just to get your hooks into my company."
"We made an investment," Victoria corrected coldly. "And it paid off. Your company flourished with our backing. We are a power couple, Ethan. This," she gestured dismissively at Rosa and Lily, "was just a loose end we had to tie up."
"Where is your father now, Rosa?" Ethan asked softly, ignoring Victoria entirely.
Rosa looked at the marble floor. "He passed away eight months ago. The treatments bought him three years. But... the cancer came back."
Ethan closed his eyes, a profound sorrow washing over him. She had suffered through the death of her father, dropped out of her PhD program, and raised their child completely alone, cleaning toilets in his house, all because she had been forced into a corner by monsters.
"I'm so sorry, Rosa," Ethan whispered. "I am so damn sorry."
Victoria rolled her eyes. "Spare me the melodrama. The past is the past. We have a press conference tomorrow to announce the merger. You will fire this maid tonight. She takes the child, and she goes back to whatever slum she came from. If you don't..."
Victoria paused, letting the threat hang heavy in the air.
"If I don't, what?" Ethan challenged, taking a step toward her. The billionaire wasn't broken; he was waking up.
"If you don't, my father pulls our capital," Victoria stated flatly. "Caldwell Enterprises defaults on its loans by Friday. You lose the company. You lose this house. You lose everything."
Ethan stared at her for a long, quiet moment. Then, surprisingly, he walked over to the mahogany desk in the corner of the parlor. He opened the top drawer, moved a false panel, and pressed his thumb against a hidden biometric scanner.
With a soft click, a concealed wall safe slid open.
Victoria frowned, her confidence wavering slightly. "What are you doing?"
Ethan reached into the safe and pulled out a thick, legal-sized folder stamped with a red CONFIDENTIAL seal. He walked back and tossed it onto the closed lid of the grand piano. It landed with a heavy, authoritative thud.
"You think you own me because of capital?" Ethan asked quietly. "You think I didn't know your father was a snake? I didn't know how he betrayed me, but I always knew he was capable of it."
Rosa looked at the folder. She saw the title printed on the front label, and her breath stopped in her throat.
Patent Application: RM-73 Cellular Regeneration Catalyst.
"That's my research," Rosa gasped, stepping forward. "That's the biochemistry formula I was working on at Columbia."
"Yes, it is," Ethan said, looking at Rosa. "When I woke up and found out you had dropped out, I bought the rights to your unfinished research from the university. I've been funding a private lab to finish it for three years in your name."
Victoria’s face turned ashen. "That's impossible. Haynes Medical holds the patent for the new cellular catalyst. We're launching it next month. It's the cornerstone of our merger!"
"No, Victoria," Ethan said, a cold, ruthless smile touching his lips. "Your father stole a fractured, incomplete version of the formula from Columbia's servers four years ago. You built your entire medical launch on stolen data. And I have the proof."

Victoria stared at the folder, genuine panic finally breaking through her arrogant facade. But before she could speak, Rosa let out a terrified scream.
Lily had dropped her stuffed rabbit. She was clutching her chest, her small face turning a terrifying shade of blue, violently gasping for air.
