Chapter 5 - THE STOLEN PATENT

"Lily!"

Rosa dropped to the floor, her knees slamming against the marble. She gathered the choking little girl into her arms. Lily’s eyes were wide with panic, her tiny hands clawing at her own throat. She wasn't making a sound.

"She can't breathe!" Rosa screamed, pure terror ripping through her chest. "Ethan, help me!"

Ethan didn't hesitate. He fell to his knees beside them, his large hands gently but firmly taking Lily. He turned the three-year-old over, resting her chest against his forearm, supporting her jaw, and delivered three sharp, precise back blows between her shoulder blades.

Nothing.

"Come on, sweetheart," Ethan gritted his teeth, panic clawing at his own throat. He delivered two more strikes.

On the fifth strike, Lily coughed violently. A small, hard plastic button—torn from the upholstery of the piano bench—flew out of her mouth and clattered onto the floor.

Lily took a massive, shuddering breath and began to wail, a beautiful, loud, life-affirming sound.

Ethan pulled the crying child against his chest, wrapping his arms securely around her and Rosa at the same time. He buried his face in Lily’s dark curls, his entire body shaking. For a man who controlled billions, he had never felt so utterly powerless, or so incredibly grateful.

"I've got you," Ethan whispered fiercely, pressing a kiss to Rosa’s temple, then to Lily’s head. "I've got you. You're safe."

Victoria stood a few feet away, watching the scene with profound disgust. She looked at the plastic button on the floor, then at the folder on the piano. While Ethan and Rosa were entirely focused on the child, Victoria slowly reached out her hand toward the confidential file.

"Touch that folder," Ethan said, his voice deadly quiet without turning around, "and I will have my security team break your fingers."

Victoria yanked her hand back as if burned. "You are overreacting. The child swallowed a button. It happens in the slums all the time."

Ethan slowly stood up, handing Lily back to Rosa. He turned to face Victoria. The vulnerability of a terrified father was gone. The ruthless corporate titan had returned.

"You stole Rosa's life," Ethan said, stepping into Victoria's space until she was forced to back up against the piano. "You stole my daughter's first three years. And your father built his medical empire on the back of Rosa's genius. That formula in the folder? It proves Haynes Medical is a fraud."

Victoria’s chest heaved. "You wouldn't dare release that. If Haynes Medical goes down, we pull our capital from Caldwell Enterprises. We all sink, Ethan. You destroy your own legacy just to protect a maid?"

"I don't care about the money," Ethan said flatly. "I never did. I built it from nothing once, I can do it again. But you?" He looked her up and down with absolute contempt. "You have never built a thing in your life. You only know how to take."

Rosa stood up slowly, holding a sniffling Lily on her hip. She looked at the folder on the piano, then at Victoria.

"You're launching the RM-73 catalyst next month?" Rosa asked, her voice surprisingly steady.

Victoria glared at her. "We are. And it will revolutionize cellular regeneration. My father is going to win a Nobel Prize."

"No, he won't," Rosa said quietly. "He's going to go to federal prison for manslaughter."

Both Ethan and Victoria looked at Rosa in shock.

"What are you talking about?" Victoria snapped.

"I didn't finish the formula at Columbia," Rosa explained, her brilliant, scientific mind cutting through the emotion in the room. "The version your father stole... the incomplete data... it has a catastrophic degradation flaw. If you inject that catalyst into a human bloodstream, it won't regenerate cells. It will accelerate cellular necrosis. Within forty-eight hours, the patient's organs will shut down."

Victoria’s face lost all color. "You're lying. Our clinical trials—"

"Were faked," Rosa interrupted firmly. "Or rushed. You know your father, Victoria. He cuts corners. If he launches that drug next month, thousands of people will die. And the blood will be on your family's hands."

Ethan stared at Rosa, awe mixing with the love he had never stopped feeling for her. She was brilliant. She had always been brilliant. And she had just handed him the weapon to destroy Richard Haynes completely.

"Where is the complete formula, Rosa?" Ethan asked. "The one that actually works?"

Rosa looked down at the floor, where Lily’s stuffed rabbit, Button, had fallen during the choking scare. The rabbit’s seam on its back was slightly ripped.

Rosa walked over, picked up the rabbit, and gently pulled the stuffing apart. She reached deep inside the toy and pulled out a small, encrypted black flash drive.

"Right here," Rosa said, holding it up. "I took it with me the night I left. I hid it because I knew Richard Haynes would come looking for it eventually."

Victoria lunged.

She didn't think. She just reacted. She threw herself at Rosa, her perfectly manicured hands clawing for the flash drive. Rosa stumbled back, shielding Lily, but Victoria managed to snatch the stuffed rabbit out of Rosa’s hand, tearing it in half.

The flash drive clattered to the floor.

Before Victoria could grab it, a heavy black leather shoe stepped squarely onto the device.

They all looked up.

Standing in the doorway was an older man with silver hair, a tailored charcoal suit, and a gold-headed cane. He looked calmly at the three of them.

May you like

"That's enough, Victoria," the man said. His voice was smooth, cultured, and terrifyingly familiar.

Ethan stumbled back, his face turning the color of ash. "Arthur?"
