Chapter 9 - THE MOTHER'S EYES

The heavy oak doors of the syndicate’s inner council chamber slammed open, echoing like a gunshot through the cavernous, dimly lit room.
The twelve ruling capos of the Chicago underworld sat around a massive circular mahogany table, their cigars frozen halfway to their mouths. Sitting at the head of the table, dressed in his ceremonial vestments, was Father Tomaso—the corrupt high priest who had backed Camilla’s coup.
Dante Russo strode into the room, his black coat stained with dried blood, looking every inch the terrifying, unkillable king they all feared.
Behind him, flanked by loyal men Dante had summoned from his personal guard, a weeping, broken Camilla was dragged into the room and thrown roughly to the floor at the center of the table.
Father Tomaso stood up quickly, his face paling as he clutched the silver rosary around his neck. "Dante. What is the meaning of this? Camilla told us you had gone mad with grief and fled the city."
"Camilla told you exactly what you paid her to say, Tomaso," Dante said, his voice ringing with absolute, lethal authority.
He reached into his coat and threw the manila folder onto the center of the table. The adoption papers and the birth certificate spilled out for every capo to see.
"Camilla is not a Russo," Dante declared, pacing around the table like a predator. "She has no royal blood. She has no right to call a council, and she has no right to challenge my proxy. She murdered my wife to seize the Moretti assets, and you, Tomaso, blessed the hit to keep the businesses in the dark."
The capos leaned forward, examining the official state documents. Murmurs of outrage and shock rippled through the room. Syndicate law was sacred. Murdering a bloodline heir and faking a royal lineage was the highest treason imaginable.
Father Tomaso stumbled backward, realizing the council was turning against him. "It's a forgery! Dante is lying to protect his failing grip on the empire!"
"He's not lying."
The entire room turned toward the doorway.
Elina walked into the council chamber, holding little Leo securely on her hip.
She wasn't wearing a waitress apron anymore. She wore a simple, elegant black dress Dante had procured for her, her dark hair falling in soft waves over her shoulders. The silver bird bracelet glinted brightly on her wrist.
But it wasn't the dress or the jewelry that made the twelve ruthless mafia bosses gasp in unison.
It was her face.
To the men sitting at that table, it was as if Sofia Moretti had stepped out of her grave and walked right into the room to demand justice. The almond eyes, the defiant chin, the unmistakable aura of the Moretti bloodline—it was undeniable.
"My name is Elina Moretti," she said clearly, her voice steady and completely devoid of fear. She looked directly at Father Tomaso. "I am Sofia’s twin sister. I survived the fire twenty-seven years ago. And I am here to claim my half of the Moretti empire."
The room fell dead silent. Even Camilla, sobbing on the floor, stopped making a sound.
Dante stepped up beside Elina, placing a protective, grounding hand on the small of her back. The physical closeness sent a rush of warmth through Elina, completely banishing the cold intimidation of the room.
"As the rightful co-heir of the Moretti bloodline, Elina’s proxy combined with mine gives us a supermajority," Dante told the council. "The Russo and Moretti families are hereby dissolving all illegal syndicate operations. The casinos will be sold. The shipping lanes will be audited and legitimized. The violence ends today."
A capo near the back stood up, scowling. "You can't just dismantle eighty years of history, Dante. We won't allow it."
Dante pulled his heavy pistol from his holster and slammed it onto the mahogany table.
"You will allow it," Dante said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "Because anyone who objects will be dealt with exactly how I am dealing with the traitors on the floor."
He gestured to his guards. "Take Camilla and Tomaso to the holding cells. The federal authorities have been tipped off anonymously about their embezzlement and extortion rings. They will spend the rest of their lives in a supermax prison."
As Camilla and the corrupt priest were dragged screaming from the room, the remaining capos looked at the gun on the table, then at Dante’s unwavering eyes, and slowly, one by one, they nodded their heads in submission.
The empire was dead.
The war was over.
Six Months Later
The warm spring sun shone brightly over the lush green gardens of the Russo estate. The heavy, oppressive atmosphere that had once choked the mansion was completely gone, replaced by the sounds of birds chirping and the distant hum of lawnmowers.
Elina sat on a woven blanket under the shade of a massive oak tree, laughing brightly as ten-month-old Leo aggressively tried to eat a fresh strawberry, smearing red juice all over his chubby cheeks.
"You're a monster," Elina giggled, wiping his face with a soft cloth. "A tiny, hungry monster."
Leo babbled happily, clapping his hands together and reaching for the silver bird bracelet on her wrist. He still loved it, but he no longer clung to her out of desperation. He clung to her out of love.
Footsteps crunched softly on the gravel path.
Dante walked across the grass, wearing a casual white linen shirt and jeans. He looked entirely different from the terrifying mafia boss who had walked into the restaurant six months ago. The heavy burden of the syndicate was gone, replaced by the relaxed, peaceful demeanor of a legitimate businessman.
He dropped onto the blanket beside Elina, leaning over to kiss Leo’s sticky forehead, causing the baby to squeal with delight.
Then, Dante turned his dark, warm eyes to Elina.
"The final paperwork went through this morning," Dante said smoothly, reaching out to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "The charity foundation is fully funded. The last of the underground assets have been liquidated."
"Sofia would be so proud of you," Elina smiled softly, leaning into his touch.
Dante’s thumb traced the edge of her jaw. "She would be proud of you, Elina. You stepped into a world of monsters and didn't blink. You gave my son his smile back."
"He gave me a family," Elina whispered, looking down at the happy little boy playing in the grass.
Dante shifted closer, his large hand cupping her cheek gently. The air between them, which had been crackling with unspoken tension and deep, mutual respect for months, finally settled into something profound and permanent.
"I don't just want you to be his aunt, Elina," Dante murmured, his gaze dropping to her lips before meeting her eyes again with absolute certainty. "And I don't want you to just be my partner in business. I want you to be my family. Forever."
Elina’s heart fluttered. She looked into the eyes of the man who had risked his life for her, the man who had torn down an empire to build a safe home for their child.

She smiled, her own eyes shining with happy tears, and closed the distance between them, pressing her lips to his in a soft, perfect kiss.
Beside them, little Leo babbled happily, safe, loved, and exactly where he belonged.
