Chapter 7 - THE VAULT OF SECRETS

The historic First City Bank of Chicago had long been closed to the public, operating strictly as a private repository for the city’s elite.
It was 3:00 AM. The rain was still coming down in sheets, providing the perfect cover as Dante bypassed the old security system at the rear service entrance. He moved with practiced, lethal efficiency, despite the blood seeping through his bandages.
"Stay close," Dante whispered, guiding Elina and Leo down a sweeping marble staircase that descended deep into the bowels of the building.
The underground vault was massive, a fortress of solid steel and reinforced concrete. The heavy circular door was already open, guarded by a single night watchman whom Dante had bribed heavily years ago. The watchman took one look at Dante’s face and retreated to the security booth without a word.
Row upon row of safety deposit boxes lined the cold, echoing room.
Dante led Elina to the very back, where a large, freestanding iron safe sat bolted to the floor. It bore the faded crest of a soaring falcon—the same crest on Elina’s pocket watch.
Dante inserted the heavy iron key into the lock.
Clack.
The ancient mechanism turned with a heavy groan, and Dante pulled the iron door open.
Elina expected to see stacks of cash, gold bars, or weapons.
Instead, the safe was almost entirely empty, save for a single, dust-covered manila folder resting on a velvet cushion.
Dante reached in and pulled the folder out. He set it on a nearby viewing table and flipped it open under the harsh fluorescent lights of the vault.
Elina leaned over his shoulder, holding Leo securely against her chest.
Inside the folder were two yellowed pieces of paper.
The first was a certificate of live birth from St. Mary’s Hospital, dated twenty-seven years ago. It listed two children.
Baby A: Sofia Moretti.
Baby B: Elina Moretti.
Elina let out a choked gasp, tears springing to her eyes as she saw her own name written in official ink. "It's true. I am her sister."
"Look at the second page," Dante said, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and revelation.
The second document was an adoption decree, stamped and sealed by the state, but heavily redacted. However, the name of the child being adopted into the Russo family was clearly legible.
Camilla Bianchi.
"Camilla isn't a Russo," Dante breathed, staring at the document in absolute disbelief. "My parents... they told me my mother had a complicated pregnancy while I was away at boarding school. They brought Camilla home and said she was my sister. But she’s adopted."
"Why does that matter?" Elina asked, her mind spinning.
"Because syndicate law is absolute," Dante explained, his eyes burning with a dangerous light. "Only true bloodline heirs can inherit the proxy of a family. Camilla has spent her entire life trying to prove she was ruthless enough to lead, but she always knew she had no legal right to the throne. She orchestrated Sofia’s death to seize control of the Moretti assets, but she needed to remove me to take the Russo seat."
Dante looked at Elina, the magnitude of the truth settling heavily between them.
"Sofia didn't just want to dissolve the syndicate," Dante said softly. "She was trying to find you, Elina. If she found you, the Moretti bloodline would have two heirs. You would have had the power to vote Camilla out permanently."
Elina looked down at the birth certificate, a profound sense of loss and belonging crashing over her simultaneously. She had spent her entire life believing she was unwanted garbage left on a church step. In reality, she was a stolen queen, hidden away by a desperate mother trying to save at least one child from the syndicate's bloody grasp.
"We have to take this to the council," Dante said, carefully folding the documents and placing them inside his coat. "If I present this proof, Camilla’s coup will collapse instantly. The capos will execute her for treason."
Before they could take another step, a deafening, metallic screech echoed through the underground room.
The massive circular steel door of the vault began to swing shut.
"No!" Dante shouted, lunging forward, but he was too late.
The three-foot-thick steel door slammed shut with a thunderous boom that shook the floor, throwing the heavy locking bolts into place. They were trapped.
Through the thick, bulletproof glass viewing window set into the side of the vault, a face appeared in the dim hallway light.
It was Camilla.
She stood on the other side of the glass, a triumphant, wicked smile twisting her elegant features. Flanking her were two armed bodyguards, holding the bribed night watchman at gunpoint.
Camilla pressed a button on the wall communicator. Her voice crackled through the speaker inside the vault, cold and victorious.
"Checkmate, dear brother," Camilla sneered, her eyes darting to Elina and the baby. "I knew you wouldn't be able to resist running to Sofia’s little treasure chest. I've had men tracking you since you left the bakery."
"You're not a Russo, Camilla!" Dante roared, slamming his fist against the bulletproof glass. "I have the adoption papers! The council will destroy you!"
Camilla laughed, a harsh, grating sound.
"The council will never see them, Dante," Camilla purred. "Because in about five minutes, the automated air circulation system in that vault is going to shut down. The air supply will run out in an hour. Tomorrow morning, the bank manager will find the tragic scene of a grieving mafia boss who couldn't live without his dead wife, and locked himself inside a vault with his son and a cheap lookalike."
Elina clutched Leo tighter, panic rising in her throat as the low hum of the air vents suddenly sputtered and died.
"You can't do this!" Elina screamed at the glass. "He's a baby! He’s your nephew!"

"He is an obstacle," Camilla said coldly, her eyes devoid of any humanity. "Goodbye, Dante."
Camilla turned on her heel, preparing to walk away and leave them to suffocate in the dark.
