Chapter 5 - THE ROSARY ON THE FLOOR

The silenced barrel of the pistol looked impossibly large in the dim lighting of the nursery.

Elina didn't scream. She knew if she screamed, the gunshot would follow instantly, and Leo would be caught in the crossfire.

"Who sent you?" Elina whispered, backing up slowly until her legs brushed the wooden slats of Leo’s crib. She spread her arms wide, shielding the sleeping baby with her own body. "Dante will kill you."

"Dante is drinking scotch in his study, grieving a ghost," the bodyguard sneered, stepping fully into the nursery and closing the door behind him. "And Camilla pays much better than he does."

He raised the weapon, leveling the sight directly at Elina’s chest.

Elina squeezed her eyes shut, bracing for the impact.

Suddenly, a massive, thunderous crash shattered the silence of the room.

The heavy mahogany door was violently kicked open, the wood splintering around the hinges. The door slammed into the bodyguard’s back, sending him staggering forward with a shout of surprise.

Before the man could recover, Dante Russo was on him.

The mafia boss moved with blinding, predatory speed. He grabbed the bodyguard’s wrist, twisting it sharply upward with a sickening crack. The suppressed pistol clattered harmlessly to the hardwood floor.

Dante didn't stop there. He drove his knee into the man’s stomach, lifted him by the collar of his suit, and threw him backward into the hallway wall with enough force to crack the plaster. The bodyguard slumped to the floor, unconscious.

Dante stood over him, breathing heavily, his fists clenched and his dark eyes burning with lethal fury.

He turned around, rushing into the nursery.

"Elina! Are you hurt?" Dante demanded, his hands grasping her shoulders, checking her frantically for wounds.

"I'm okay," Elina gasped, her knees finally giving out. She sagged forward, and Dante caught her, holding her securely against his broad chest. "He... he was going to kill us."

Dante looked at the unconscious man in the hallway, his jaw tight. "He’s one of my most trusted men. Nobody breaches this wing without inside access."

"It was Camilla," Elina said, pulling back slightly to look into Dante's eyes. "Dante, she sent him."

Dante’s expression hardened. A flicker of denial flashed across his face. "Camilla is my sister. We don't share blood, but we share a name. She wouldn't order a hit on my son."

"Not on your son. On me," Elina insisted. She reached into her apron pocket with shaking hands and pulled out the worn leather diary. She pressed it into Dante’s chest. "You need to read this. Sofia hid it inside a hollowed-out book. Camilla has been plotting against you since before Leo was born."

Dante stared at the diary, recognizing his late wife’s belongings. He slowly took it from Elina's hands, flipping to the final page where the ink was stained with tears.

As Dante read his wife's final, desperate words, the color drained from his face. The strong, untouchable mafia boss looked like a man whose entire world was crumbling into dust.

She wants me dead, and she wants Dante to sign over his proxy to her. If anything happens to me, tell Dante it was his sister.

"She poisoned her," Dante whispered, his voice breaking in a way that shattered Elina’s heart. "Sofia’s heart failed during labor. The doctors couldn't explain why her blood pressure spiked so violently. Camilla... she was bringing Sofia her tea every night."

Dante closed the diary, his knuckles turning white. The grief in his eyes instantly calcified into pure, terrifying rage.

"Pack a bag," Dante ordered, his voice dropping into a deadly, calm register. "Take only what the baby needs. We are leaving this house."

"Where are we going?" Elina asked, already grabbing a diaper bag from the changing table.

"Somewhere Camilla can't find us," Dante replied.

As Dante turned to drag the unconscious bodyguard out of the doorway, his foot kicked something on the floor. It was a heavy, silver rosary that had fallen out of the bodyguard's pocket during the struggle.

Dante picked it up, staring at the intricate silver cross.

"This isn't Camilla’s," Dante said slowly, a deep sense of dread creeping into his voice. "This belongs to Father Tomaso. The syndicate’s high priest. He sits on the inner council."

Elina froze, a baby bottle halfway to the bag. "What does that mean?"

"It means Camilla isn't acting alone," Dante realized, looking at the door. "The entire council is backing her. They want me removed. They want control of the empire, and they needed Sofia out of the way because she was the rightful bloodline heir."

Before Dante could say another word, the sound of heavy boots echoed from the grand staircase. Not just one or two men. Dozens.

The estate's security alarm began shrieking, a deafening, pulsing siren that bathed the hallway in flashing red light.

"They locked down the estate," Dante growled, drawing a heavy pistol from the shoulder holster hidden beneath his suit jacket. "The coup is happening tonight."

He turned to Elina, his eyes fierce and protective. "Take Leo. Do not let him go, no matter what happens."

Elina scooped the sleeping baby out of the crib, wrapping him tightly in a thick blanket. Miraculously, Leo didn't cry. He just buried his tiny face against her neck, gripping the silver bird bracelet on her wrist.

Dante led the way out of the nursery, checking the hallway corners with lethal precision. They couldn't go down the main stairs; the voices of armed men were already echoing through the foyer.

"The servant's stairwell," Dante whispered, guiding her toward a heavy oak door at the end of the hall. "It leads down to the old wine cellar. There's a prohibition tunnel that exits past the perimeter wall."

They slipped into the narrow, dark stairwell just as a group of armed men breached the nursery behind them. Shouts echoed down the hall as they discovered the empty crib.

"Move," Dante urged, staying between Elina and the door above.

They descended rapidly in the darkness, the smell of damp earth and old wine filling their lungs. Elina held Leo so tightly her arms ached, praying the baby wouldn't make a sound.

They reached the cellar, navigating through towering racks of vintage bottles until Dante found a loose section of the stone wall. He pushed it open, revealing a dark, muddy tunnel smelling of the stormy night outside.

"Keep your head down," Dante instructed, helping her inside.

But as Dante turned to pull the stone door shut behind them, a gunshot rang out in the confined cellar.

Dante grunted, violently slamming against the stone archway as a bullet tore through the fabric of his coat.
