Chapter 9 - THE FAMILY TABLE

That evening, the grand dining room of the Moretti mansion looked completely different from the night of the aborted engagement dinner.

The crystal chandelier still sparkled overhead, but the long banquet table was no longer lined with cold, sterile silver serving dishes meant to impress pretentious socialites. Instead, it was covered in warm, homestyle lasagna, garlic bread, and a massive bowl of fresh fruit.

There were no twenty-eight wealthy guests whispering behind cupped hands. There was only family.

At the head of the table sat Luca, with little Lucy sitting on his right and Oliver on his left, excitedly recounting every single detail of his double in the fourth inning.

Eleanor sat comfortably near the center, smiling warmly as Emily passed her a basket of warm bread rolls.

"I still say that slide into second base was professional grade," Arthur Carter—who had dropped by to join the celebration—remarked with a chuckle, taking a sip of iced tea. "Reminds me of how I used to run the bases back in high school before my knees gave out."

"You couldn't slide like that, Grandpa Arthur, you're too old!" Oliver teased, laughing heartily.

Arthur threw his hands up in mock offense. "Old? Why, I'll have you know I'm only as old as the sneakers on my feet!"

The room filled with rich, genuine laughter—a sound that echoed off the high walls and banished every lingering ghost of the past.

Luca looked around the table, taking in the smiling faces of his children, the steadfast loyalty of his friends, and the quiet, radiant presence of Emily sitting just across from him.

He picked up his glass of sparkling cider and tapped his spoon gently against the rim.

The table instantly grew quiet, turning to look at him.

"I want to make a toast," Luca began, his deep voice carrying a quiet, resonant warmth that reached every corner of the room. "For a long time, I thought being a strong man meant building walls, hiding secrets, and protecting a name above everything else. I was wrong."

He looked down at Oliver and Lucy, his eyes shining with profound emotion.

"Strength isn't about what you hide from the world. It's about what you're willing to fight for out in the open. Thank you all for staying by my side, for forgiving my blindness, and for reminding me what truly matters."

He raised his glass slightly, locking eyes with Emily.

"To family. To honesty. And to a home where everyone belongs at the table."

"To family!" everyone echoed in unison, glasses clinking together in a joyous chorus.

Lucy reached across the table, grabbing a strawberry from the fruit bowl and holding it up toward her father with a sticky, triumphant grin. "Daddy, can we have ice cream for breakfast tomorrow?"

Luca laughed, shaking his head as he pulled his daughter into a warm embrace.

"Only if you eat your broccoli first, sweetheart."

And as the golden evening light streamed through the grand windows, wrapping the entire household in an unbreakable cocoon of peace and belonging, the Moretti family finally knew what it meant to be truly home.
