Chapter 8 - THE NEW FOUNDATION

The weekend sun shone brilliantly over the Westbrook community baseball field, casting a warm golden glow across the freshly mown grass and the packed wooden bleachers.
In the front row, sitting right behind the home-plate netting, Luca Moretti wore a casual baseball cap instead of his usual three-piece suit. Beside him sat nine-year-old Oliver in full uniform, nervously adjusting his cap, and six-year-old Lucy, who was holding a oversized foam finger in her lap while waving enthusiastically at the field.
Sitting right next to Luca was Emily, sharing a bag of roasted peanuts with Eleanor Price, who had insisted on coming out to support her "grandkids" despite her creaky joints.
"Strike one!" the umpire bellowed across the diamond.
Oliver, waiting in the on-deck circle, swallowed hard and took a practice swing with his bat.
Luca stood up from the bleachers, cupped his hands around his mouth, and shouted across the field with a booming voice that made several parents turn around in surprise.
"You've got this, buddy! Keep your eye on the ball!"
Oliver looked toward the bleachers, caught his father's eye, and gave a confident nod. The fear of failure, the desperate need to earn his father's affection through endless lists of rules, and the heavy burden of trying to be "good enough" had completely melted away over the past two weeks. He knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that he was loved unconditionally.
The pitcher wound up and hurled the ball toward home plate.
The batter before Oliver swung and connected with a sharp crack, sending a ground ball rolling toward third base. The runner scrambled toward second, but the play at first was out.
"Batter up, Moretti!" the umpire called out.
Oliver stepped into the batter's box, gripping the bat tightly. He planted his cleats in the dirt, took a deep breath, and focused on the white stitching of the approaching ball.
The pitcher threw a fast one right down the middle.
Oliver swung with all his might.
CRACK!
The ball soared through the autumn air, clearing the shortstop's head and bouncing deep into the outfield grass.
"Go, Oliver, go!" Lucy shrieked, jumping up and down on the bleacher bench, waving her foam finger wildly.
The crowd erupted into cheers as Oliver rounded first base and sprinted hard toward second, sliding safely into the bag just as the throw arrived. Dust flew into the air, and the umpire threw his hands up.
"Safe!"

Luca cheered louder than anyone in the stadium, pumping his fist in the air with a grin that reached from ear to ear. Emily laughed, clapping her hands enthusiastically while Eleanor wiped a proud tear from her cheek.
For the first time in their lives, the Moretti family wasn't hiding behind walls of wealth, secrets, or fear. They were out in the open sunlight, standing tall, living a life built on honesty, protection, and unconditional love.
