Chapter 7 - BRINGING THE PIECES TOGETHER

Two weeks had passed since the night at the rail yard, and the atmosphere inside the Moretti mansion had undergone a miraculous transformation.

The cold, intimidating marble floors no longer felt like a prison. Instead, they echoed with the sound of running sneakers, childish laughter, and the comforting aroma of home-cooked meals drifting from the kitchen.

On a crisp Tuesday afternoon, eighty-one-year-old Eleanor Price sat comfortably in the sunlit parlor, sipping tea from a delicate porcelain cup while six-year-old Lucy proudly showed her a crayon drawing of a superhero cat taped to the refrigerator.

"Look, Grandma Eleanor!" Lucy chirped, pointing enthusiastically at the purple cape she had drawn on the cat. "This is Daddy flying through the clouds to catch the bad guys!"

Eleanor laughed softly, her wrinkled face glowing with joy. "That is the finest superhero I've ever seen, sweetheart. Your daddy certainly deserves a cape after everything he's done."

Across the room, sitting at the mahogany writing desk, Luca Moretti looked up from a stack of legal documents and smiled. The dark shadows under his eyes were gone, replaced by the relaxed expression of a man who finally had his priorities in order.

The federal prosecutors had officially locked away Richard Harrington and his top enforcer Viktor Vance for life without the possibility of parole. Vanessa Bellini, stripped of her wealth, her social standing, and her freedom, was awaiting trial in a federal holding facility for conspiracy, kidnapping, and forgery.

The Moretti syndicate was restructuring under new, transparent management, leaving behind the dark shadow of extortion and violence. But for Luca, business was no longer everything.

The heavy front doors swung open, and nine-year-old Oliver walked in, dropping his backpack by the foyer table with a loud thud.

"Dad! Guess what?" Oliver shouted, running into the parlor with a permission slip waving in his hand. "Coach picked me to be starting pitcher for Saturday's little league game!"

Luca stood up, walking over to his son and placing a proud hand on his shoulder. "Is that right? Well, you better believe I'll be in the front row cheering louder than anyone else."

"Can Lucy come too?" Oliver asked, looking down at his little sister, who was nodding vigorously.

"Of course she can," Luca replied, his heart swelling with pride. "Both of you. And we're going to get ice cream afterward—real ice cream, not whatever you want to negotiate."

Oliver grinned from ear to ear.

At that moment, Emily Parker stepped into the parlor carrying a fresh tray of pastries from the kitchen. She stopped when she saw the family gathered together, a warm, affectionate smile gracing her lips.

"More tea, everyone?" Emily asked gently.

Luca turned his gaze toward her, his expression softening instantly. Over the past two weeks, Emily had become much more than a housemaid; she had been the anchor that held the household together through the darkest hours of the crisis.

"Actually, Emily," Luca said, stepping closer to her. "Why don't you put the tray down and join us? As a guest, not staff."

Emily blinked in surprise, her cheeks warming slightly. "Oh, Mr. Moretti, I couldn't—"

"I insist," Luca interrupted gently. "After everything you've done for my children, you're family now."

Lucy immediately ran over, grabbing the edge of Emily's apron. "Yes, Emily! Please sit with us! We're talking about superhero cats!"

May you like

Emily looked down at the little girl, then up at Luca, whose dark eyes held a quiet, sincere warmth that made her breath catch.

"All right," Emily whispered with a bright smile. "I'd love to."
