Chapter 4 - THE HIGHWAY AMBUSH

The television screen in Elena’s living room flashed with breaking news banners in bold red letters: TRAFFIC BLOCKED ON INTERSTATE 94 AFTER ARMED INCIDENT INVOLVING HIGH-SECURITY TRANSPORT.

Elena stood frozen, the phone still pressed to her ear, listening to her daughter's frantic sobbing through the receiver.

"Gabriella, take a deep breath," Elena commanded, forcing every ounce of maternal steel into her voice despite the cold panic gripping her own heart. "Tell me exactly what you know. Where is your father?"

"I don't know!" Gabriella gasped, fighting for air on the other end of the line. "Uncle Marco was being transferred to a federal penitentiary under armed guard, but a semi-truck rammed the front escort vehicle near the downtown exit. Eyewitnesses said men with automatic weapons got out... they took both prisoners. Dad's security team tried to intervene, but... but there was a shootout!"

Elena’s eyes darted back to the computer screen on her kitchen table, where the micro-SD card containing Marco and Vanessa's incriminating audio files still sat plugged into the USB port.

The conspiracy wasn't just about a bitter divorce or stolen board shares. It was tied to something much bigger—something powerful enough to launch an armed military-style assault in broad daylight on an interstate highway to snatch Marco and Vanessa out of federal custody before they could talk.

"Listen to me, sweetheart," Elena said firmly. "I'm coming to you right now. Stay at your apartment, lock all the doors, and don't open them for anyone except Matteo or the state police."

"Mom, please be careful," Gabriella wept. "They have guns—"

"I'll be fine," Elena interrupted gently. "I'll call you when I'm close."

She hung up, pulled the micro-SD card out of her computer, and slipped it safely into the velvet locket pocket. Without wasting a second, she grabbed her wool coat, snatched her car keys from the hook by the door, and hurried out of her apartment.

Twenty minutes later, Elena’s sedan pulled up behind a barricade of flashing police cruisers blocking the westbound lanes of Interstate 94.

Dark plumes of smoke rose into the overcast Chicago sky from the wreckage of a blackened transport van resting against the concrete highway divider. State troopers and federal agents swarmed the asphalt, examining bullet casings and shattered glass.

Elena parked on the shoulder a hundred yards back, grabbed her coat collar against the biting wind, and walked resolutely toward the police tape.

"Ma'am, you can't be here," a state trooper warned, stepping forward to block her path as she approached the yellow tape line. "This is an active crime scene."

Before Elena could answer, a familiar voice called out from behind the trooper.

"Let her through. She's family."

Matteo pushed past two federal agents, ducking under the police tape. His face was smudged with soot, and a white bandage was taped tightly across his left temple where he had clearly taken a hit during the skirmish.

The trooper hesitated, but seeing Matteo's security credentials, he lifted the tape.

Elena hurried under the barrier, grabbing Matteo by the sleeve of his coat. "Matteo, tell me what happened. Where is Luca?"

Matteo shook his head, looking grim. "We walked right into a trap, Mrs. Moretti. The transport order was leaked from inside the federal prosecutor's office. A professional hit squad intercepted the van before our backup could close the distance. They didn't just rescue Marco and Vanessa—they took Mr. Moretti with them."

Elena’s breath caught. "They took Luca too?"

"We found his bullet-riddled SUV abandoned three blocks down the access road," Matteo said, pulling a heavy silver object from his pocket and holding it out toward her. "One of our scouts found this on the passenger seat."

Elena looked down at the object resting in Matteo's palm.

It was Luca's heavy, custom-engraved silver signet ring—the one he had worn every single day of their marriage, bearing the crest of the Moretti family.

She reached out with trembling fingers and picked it up. The metal was still faintly warm. Scratched across the inner band was a set of numbers written in quick, hurried handwriting that didn't belong to Luca.

It looked like coordinates, or an address.

1404 INDUSTRIAL DOCKWAY — PIER 7.

Matteo leaned in closer, squinting at the scratched numbers. "Is that... is that an address?"

May you like

Elena gripped the heavy ring tightly in her palm, the metal pressing sharply into her skin.

"Yes," Elena said, her eyes narrowing as she looked toward the sprawling, abandoned industrial district along the riverfront where Pier 7 sat shrouded in heavy fog. "And I know who's waiting for us there."
