Chapter 3 - THE GOLD LOCKET IN THE SAFE

The morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of Elena’s modest, sunlit apartment on the north side of Chicago, casting warm golden patterns across the wooden floorboards.

For the first time in eighteen months, Elena woke up without the dull, persistent ache of betrayal anchoring her chest. Moving out of the sprawling Moretti estate hadn't been easy—she had walked away with only her personal belongings, refusing any alimony tied to the syndicate's bloody accounts—but the small two-bedroom apartment was her own. It smelled of fresh coffee, blooming geraniums on the windowsill, and peace.

There was a sharp, urgent knock at her front door.

Elena set her mug down on the kitchen counter, wiping her hands on a dish towel. She walked cautiously down the hallway, peering through the peephole.

It wasn't Gabriella. It was Matteo, Luca’s head of security, standing alone in the hallway wearing a dark trench coat, holding a small velvet jewelry box in his gloved hands.

Elena opened the door just a few inches. "Matteo? What are you doing here?"

"Mrs. Moretti—Elena," Matteo corrected himself quickly, his expression grave and respectful. "Mr. Moretti asked me to bring this to you personally. He said you have a right to have it back."

He extended the velvet box toward her.

Elena stared at it suspiciously. "What is it?"

"It was found in Marco’s private office safe during the security sweep early this morning," Matteo explained quietly, glancing up and down the empty apartment hallway. "Along with the fabricated financial transfer records Marco used to frame you, Mr. Moretti found a locked compartment that belonged to Vanessa. Inside was this."

Reluctantly, Elena opened the door wider and took the small velvet box from his hands.

She snapped the brass clasp. Resting inside on the faded white satin lining was a heavy gold locket—an antique family heirloom that had supposedly been stolen from her bedroom safe three weeks before she discovered Luca's alleged affair.

Elena’s breath hitched. She picked up the locket by its delicate chain.

"My grandmother's locket," she whispered. "The police told me it was lost during a break-in."

"It wasn't a break-in," Matteo said grimly. "Marco had a duplicate key to your private suite. He took it to plant evidence that you were secretly selling family valuables to cover gambling debts—another lie he fed Luca to make him believe you were unstable before the divorce."

Elena felt a cold anger flare in her chest. Every single detail of her life had been systematically dismantled by a man she had treated like a brother for three decades.

"Is Luca still at the mansion?" she asked.

"No, ma'am," Matteo replied. "He went down to the federal holding facility to confront Marco face-to-face. But before he left, he asked me to give you this key as well."

He dropped a small brass key onto her palm.

"What does this open?"

"A safety deposit box at the First National Bank downtown," Matteo said. "Mr. Moretti said whatever is inside belongs to you, and only you."

Matteo nodded respectfully, turned on his heel, and walked down the hallway toward the elevator, leaving Elena standing in her doorway with the gold locket and the small brass key resting in her hand.

She looked down at the locket. As she turned it over to examine the intricate engraving on the back, she noticed a tiny hidden seam along the edge that she had never seen before. Pressing her fingernail against the silver latch, the locket sprang open.

Inside wasn't just a tiny photograph of her parents.

Tucked neatly behind the paper photo was a micro-SD card, so small it looked like a grain of black sand.

Elena’s heart skipped a beat. She walked over to her kitchen table where her laptop sat open, grabbed a card reader from her desk drawer, and plugged the micro-SD card into the USB port.

A folder popped up on her screen instantly.

AUDIO_RECORDINGS_VANCE_MORETTI

Her hands trembled as she clicked on the first audio file.

A computer-generated audio player loaded, and the scratchy, recorded voice of Marco Moretti filled her quiet kitchen, speaking with chilling clarity:

"Once Elena finds them in the suite, she'll walk out without asking questions. Just make sure Vanessa is wearing that damn shirt so she looks guilty enough to sell it. We get the signature on the asset transfer by Monday, or the whole syndicate goes to federal prison..."

Elena stared at the screen in absolute horror. The audio file was dated exactly two days before her divorce was finalized.

Before she could click on the second file, her cell phone began to ring loudly on the kitchen counter.

She glanced at the caller ID.

It was Gabriella.

Elena swiped to answer, pressing the phone to her ear. "Gabriella? Is everything okay?"

"Mom! Thank God," Gabriella cried out, her voice frantic, breathless, and laced with pure terror. "You need to turn on the news right now!"

"What's wrong?"

May you like

"Dad... Dad went to the federal holding facility to confront Uncle Marco, but... but the transport van was ambushed on the highway ten minutes ago!"

The phone slipped slightly from Elena's fingers as the world around her seemed to freeze.
