Chapter 8 - THE RECKONING AT THE PENTHOUSE

~1,100 words
The thirty-second-floor penthouse overlooking downtown Chicago was silent, opulent, and suffocatingly tense.
Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the city skyline, but inside, the atmosphere felt like the eye of a hurricane. The marble floors reflected the amber glow of the midday sun as Luca Moretti stepped out of the private elevator, his black coat sweeping behind him like a shroud of judgment.
I walked right behind him, carrying a heavy leather briefcase containing the emergency backup drives of the syndicate's operational records, while two armed guards flanked our sides.
In the center of the vast, minimalist living room stood Mr. Reynolds.
He was holding a crystal tumbler of scotch, looking entirely relaxed, standing beside a mahogany desk where the stolen syndicate ledger lay open like an unholy bible.
""""You took your time, Luca,"""" Reynolds said, turning around with a smug, victorious grin. """"I thought the fire in your mansion would have slowed you down a bit more.""""
Luca didn't smile. He walked slowly across the marble floor until he stood ten feet away from Reynolds, his hands resting casually inside his coat pockets.
""""You burned my home, Reynolds,"""" Luca said, his voice dangerously low. """"You threatened my family. And you stole a book that doesn't belong to you.""""
""""It belongs to whoever has the power to hold it,"""" Reynolds scoffed, taking a sip of his scotch. He gestured toward the open ledger on the desk. """"One phone call to the federal prosecutor right now, and every asset you own is frozen, every capo you employ is locked behind bars, and your precious little syndicate empire crumbles into dust before sunset.""""
Luca tilted his head, studying his former business partner with mild curiosity. """"And what do you get out of this? You were my most trusted partner. You had wealth, power, and respect. Why blow it all up over a grudge?""""
Reynolds's face twisted into an ugly snarl. """"Respect? You treated me like an errand boy for ten years! You took all the credit while I did the dirty work! And when Vanessa came to me crying six years ago because she was pregnant with your child and terrified you'd discard her like trash, I helped her hide it. I gave her the sanctuary she needed while you were busy playing kingpin!""""
""""So you played both sides,"""" Luca said coldly. """"You helped her hide my son, and then you used him as leverage to blackmail me when you wanted a bigger slice of the pie.""""
""""I wanted it all, Luca,"""" Reynolds said, raising his glass in a mock toast. """"And now, I've got it.""""
Before Reynolds could blink, the elevator doors behind us chimed open once more.
Heavy footsteps echoed across the marble floor.
Reynolds turned his head, expecting reinforcements, but the smile vanished from his face instantly.
Walking out of the elevator were two federal agents in dark suits—and trailing right behind them, flanked by four heavily armed Moretti enforcers, was a familiar face with tear-stained cheeks and a defiant chin.
Vanessa Bellini stepped into the penthouse.
Reynolds went completely pale. """"Vanessa... what is the meaning of this?""""
Vanessa stopped ten feet away from him, her eyes burning with a cold, righteous fury that I had never seen in her before.
""""It means your game is over, Reynolds,"""" she said, her voice steady and clear. """"You didn't help me hide because you cared about me. You helped me hide because you wanted to use my secret as a permanent leash around Luca's neck so you could seize control of the syndicate behind his back.""""
Reynolds stammered, taking a step backward. """"That's a lie! She's hysterical! She'll say anything to save her own skin!""""
""""It's not a lie,"""" a quiet, frail voice echoed from the elevator.
We all turned.
Stepping out of the elevator, holding tightly to the hand of a little boy with dark curly hair and a silver pocket watch in his pocket, was Margaret Ellis.
Leo looked around the vast, luxurious penthouse with wide, curious eyes. Then he spotted Luca standing near the center of the room.
""""Daddy!"""" the boy called out, breaking away from his grandmother's hand and running across the marble floor straight toward Luca.
Luca dropped to one knee, sweeping his arms wide, and caught his son in a fierce, protective embrace, burying his face in the boy's dark curls.

Reynolds stared at them in sheer horror. """"You... you brought the kid here? Are you insane?""""
""""No,"""" Luca said slowly, standing up with Leo still cradled safely in one arm. He looked straight at Reynolds, his dark eyes burning with absolute finality. """"I brought my family home.""""
