Chapter 2 - THE GRAVE BENEATH THE FLOORBOARDS

~1,100 words
The silence that followed Mr. Reynolds's confession was absolute. It was the kind of stillness that made the chandeliers overhead feel heavy, as if the crystal pendants might shatter under the weight of the unspoken words pressing against them from every corner of the room. Twenty-eight people sat frozen at the long mahogany table, their forks hovering inches from untouched plates, their eyes darting nervously between the head of the table and the man standing near the far end.
Luca Moretti did not raise his voice. He did not slam his fist against the wood.
Instead, he turned his head slowly, the sharp planes of his face catching the amber glow of the candlelight. His dark eyes locked onto Mr. Reynolds—a man he had known for over a decade, a man who had shared his scotch, hunted on his private estate, and sat at his right hand during every major milestone of his adult life.
""""Say that again,"""" Luca whispered.
The words were dangerously soft. Every person at the table knew that tone. It was the sound of a storm gathering just beneath a calm surface.
Mr. Reynolds swallowed hard, his throat working visibly against the stiff collar of his shirt. He did not look at Vanessa. He looked directly at Luca, his gaze heavy with a mixture of guilt and exhaustion.
""""I said,"""" Reynolds repeated, his voice barely rising above a murmur, """"that the boy's father has been paying his school tuition for the past six years. And that father isn't me, Luca. It's you.""""
The breath rushed out of my lungs. I gripped the edge of the serving cart so hard my knuckles turned white.
Around the table, a collective gasp rippled through the guests. Several people stood up halfway from their chairs, unsure whether to flee or stay for the fallout.
Vanessa dropped her hands from her face. Her eyes were wide, red-rimmed, and filled with sheer panic.
""""Luca—don't listen to him,"""" she stammered, her voice cracking as she lunged toward the head of the table. """"He's lying! He's just trying to protect his own skin because—because he helped me cover it up! Reynolds, tell him you're lying!""""
Reynolds looked at her with a cold, pitying expression. """"I'm done lying, Vanessa. I told you three weeks ago when you showed me that engagement ring that I wouldn't let you drag Luca into a web of deceit. You thought you could lock down the most powerful man in Chicago and bury your past in Milwaukee. But some graves are too shallow to hold what's buried inside them.""""
Luca ignored them both. He stepped away from his chair, walking slowly around the corner of the mahogany table until he stood directly in front of Margaret.
The elderly woman was shaking, her frail hands clutching the pink kindergarten ribbon as if it were a lifeline.
""""Mrs. Ellis,"""" Luca said, his voice dropping an octave, gentle yet commanding. """"Look at me.""""
Margaret slowly raised her tear-filled eyes.
""""Did you know?"""" Luca asked.
She hesitated, her lips trembling. """"I... I suspected it, sir. But Vanessa made me swear never to say a word. When the tuition checks started arriving six years ago from an anonymous account in downtown Chicago, I knew who's signature was on the bank drafts. I saw your handwriting on a business document once, years ago, when you partnered with Reynolds. The looping 'M,' the way you cross your t's... I knew.""""
Luca closed his eyes for a fraction of a second. When he opened them, the darkness in his gaze was terrifying.
He turned back toward Vanessa.
""""Six years ago,"""" Luca said, his voice terrifyingly calm. """"We were together for nearly a year. Then you vanished for three months, claiming you had to care for a sick aunt in Europe. When you came back, you told me we had grown apart. You said you couldn't handle my world, that the danger and the pressure were too much for you.""""
Vanessa backed away until the small of her back hit the sideboard, her chest heaving beneath the red silk gown. """"I was scared, Luca! You were building an empire, you had enemies, there were threats on your life every single day! I couldn't bring a child into that world!""""
""""So you told me the baby didn't exist?"""" Luca's voice rose, cutting through the dining room like a blade. """"You let me walk away believing I had no legacy, no family, while you hid my son ninety miles away in a cramped apartment with a mother you treated like a servant?""""
""""I wanted to tell you!""" she cried, tears finally spilling over her cheeks, ruining her immaculate makeup. """"Every time I looked at you, I wanted to tell you! But then you became head of the Moretti syndicate. You became untouchable. I thought if you found out, you'd take him away from me, or worse—use him as leverage against our rivals. I was protecting him!""""
""""You were protecting yourself,"""" a new voice interrupted.
We all turned. It was one of the senior capos sitting near the middle of the table, a man named Moretti loyalist who rarely spoke unless spoken to. He laid his napkin on the table and stood up.
""""Boss,"""" the capo said, looking directly at Luca. """"If the boy is yours, that means he's the heir to the Moretti name. Under the old rules, a hidden heir is a vulnerability. But a found heir... changes everything.""""
Vanessa let out a sharp, hysterical laugh. """"See? That's what I was afraid of! You people only care about bloodlines and power! My son isn't a chess piece for your syndicate wars! He's a little boy who likes drawing pictures of dinosaurs and eating chocolate chip pancakes on Saturday mornings!""""
Margaret looked sharply at her daughter. Then, she reached into her worn leather handbag one more time.
This time, she didn't pull out a ribbon or a paper crown. She pulled out a small, heavy object wrapped in a piece of soft flannel.
She unwrapped it slowly and placed it on the pristine white tablecloth between Luca's plate and Vanessa's empty champagne glass.
It was a silver pocket watch. The casing was scratched and worn from decades of use, but the engraving on the back caught the candlelight.
Luca stared down at the watch. His breath caught in his throat.
It was his grandfather's watch. The one he had lost during a high-stakes poker game in a downtown club seven years ago—the very night he and Vanessa had broken up.
""""He sleeps with this under his pillow every night,"""" Margaret whispered, her voice breaking the heavy silence. """"He calls it his magic clock. He thinks it belongs to a prince who protects him. I found it in Vanessa's drawer the week she moved to Chicago. She told me she found it on the street. But I knew better.""""
Luca reached out with fingers that visibly shook. He picked up the silver pocket watch. He pressed the latch, and the silver lid popped open, revealing the small, ticking gears inside and a tiny photograph tucked behind the glass face—a photograph of a little boy with dark, curly hair and Luca's exact eyes.
The room faded away. The twenty-eight guests, the chandeliers, the political tension, the syndicate rules—none of it mattered anymore.
Luca held the watch in his palm, his thumb tracing the scratched metal.
Then he looked up at Margaret, his eyes shining with unshed tears.
""""Where is he right now?"""" Luca asked.
Margaret swallowed hard. """"He's at my house in Milwaukee. Sleeping in the small bedroom under a quilt I made him.""""
Luca didn't hesitate. He tossed his napkin onto the table, turned on his heel, and walked briskly toward the grand double doors of the dining room.
Before he reached the threshold, he stopped and looked back over his shoulder.
""""Natalie,"""" he called out.
May you like
I jumped, my heart leaping into my throat. """"Yes, Mr. Moretti?""""
""""Get your coat,"""" he said, his voice hard as iron and clear as a bell. """"We're going to Milwaukee.""""
