Chapter 5 - THE DAWN OF RECONCILIATION

~1,100 words
The grey light of dawn began to filter through the lace curtains of the small Milwaukee bedroom, casting long, peaceful shadows across the floor.
The police and Luca's elite security detail had cleared the property hours ago. The unconscious intruder had been taken away quietly, and two trusted Moretti guards now stood watch at the front and back doors of the bungalow, ensuring the perimeter was completely secure.
Downstairs, the broken doorframe had been temporarily patched with heavy plywood, and the smell of fresh coffee filled the kitchen.
I sat at the small laminate kitchen table, nursing a mug of black coffee, watching the morning news play quietly on a small portable television in the corner. There was no mention of the shootout in Milwaukee—men like Luca Moretti operated in a world where violence was solved behind closed doors, far away from public sirens and flashing lights.
Footsteps sounded on the wooden stairs.
I looked up. Luca descended into the kitchen, carrying Leo on his shoulders.
The little boy was laughing, wearing a oversized Moretti suit jacket that swallowed his entire upper body like a cape, holding the silver pocket watch proudly in his hand.
""""Higher!""" Leo giggled, gripping Luca's hair gently.
""""If I go any higher, you'll hit the ceiling fan, captain,"""" Luca replied with a deep, rumbling laugh that sounded entirely foreign to the cold, untouchable syndicate boss I had watched walk into his engagement dinner twenty-four hours ago.
Margaret stood near the stove, flipping pancakes on a worn griddle, wiping a tear from her cheek with the corner of her apron. For the first time all weekend, the exhaustion lines around her eyes seemed slightly softer, replaced by a quiet, radiant peace.
Luca set Leo down gently on a wooden chair at the table. He pulled out the chair beside him and sat down, his dark eyes meeting mine across the table.
""""Natalie,"""" he said quietly.
I straightened up, putting down my mug. """"Yes, Mr. Moretti?""""
""""Call me Luca,"""" he said, offering a small, genuine smile. """"After everything we've been through tonight, 'Mr. Moretti' feels a bit too formal for someone who saved my son's life by standing in front of a gun.""""
I felt my cheeks warm slightly. """"I just did what anyone would have done.""""
""""No,"""" Margaret chimed in, turning from the stove with a plate stacked high with golden pancakes. She set them down in front of Leo, who immediately reached for the maple syrup. """"Not everyone has the courage to stand up to monsters, dear. You remind me so much of myself when I was your age—protecting the people you love no matter the cost.""""
Leo looked up from his pancakes, his dark eyes darting between us. """"Are you staying with us, Natalie?""""
I looked down at the little boy, whose curls were still messy from sleep. My heart melted. """"I... I don't know, buddy. I work for your dad back in Chicago.""""
""""Not anymore you don't,"""" Luca said firmly, leaning back in his chair. He crossed his arms, his expression serious. """"The housemaid position at the Moretti estate is officially retired as of last night. If you want a job, I need someone trustworthy, sharp, and fearless to manage Leo's transition back to Chicago. And trust me, the pay is significantly better than pressing linens.""""
I stared at him in astonishment. """"You're offering me a job as...""""
""""As family,"""" Luca interrupted softly, his gaze steady. """"Because after everything that happened, nobody walks away from this table as a stranger.""""
Before I could answer, the harsh ringing of a mobile phone shattered the quiet morning atmosphere.
Luca's expression instantly hardened. He reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out his encrypted satellite phone. The screen flashed with an incoming call from an unknown private number.
He stared at the screen for three seconds before pressing accept and bringing it to his ear.
""""Talk,"""" Luca ordered.
I held my breath. Margaret paused with her spatula frozen in mid-air. Even Leo stopped chewing his pancake, sensing the sudden shift in the room's energy.
For a long moment, Luca didn't speak. He just listened, his jaw clenching so hard muscles ticked along his cheek.
""""Where?"""" Luca asked, his voice dropping into that dangerous, icy register that made my spine tingle.
A brief pause followed.
Then, Luca let out a dark, humorless laugh.
""""Tell him I'll be there in two hours,"""" Luca said, and abruptly hung up the phone.
He slipped the device back into his pocket and looked around the kitchen, his eyes resting first on his mother-in-law, then on his son, and finally on me.
""""Who was it, Luca?"""" Margaret asked, her voice trembling.
Luca stood up slowly, pushing his chair back from the table.
""""Reynolds,"""" Luca said coldly. """"He says if I want the full truth about who ordered the hit last night—and who really helped Vanessa orchestrate the cover-up—I need to meet him alone at the old train depot on the edge of town.""""
May you like
My stomach dropped. """"Luca, it's a trap. It has to be.""""
""""I know it's a trap,"""" Luca replied, buttoning his suit jacket and reaching down to pick up his heavy leather gloves from the counter. He looked down at Leo, kneeling beside the chair to press a gentle kiss to the boy's curly hair. """"Keep eating your pancakes, captain. The prince has to go settle a score.""""
