Chapter 9 - THE BIRTHDAY CUPCAKESThree days later, the mansion on Lake Shore Drive looked like a home again.

The federal prosecutors had finished their preliminary review, ensuring that Vanessa and Nicholas would face maximum charges without a single shred of collateral damage to the legitimate foundation work Luca had built. Vanessa's assets had been frozen, her engagement ring melted down into a trust fund for the community center, and her name permanently scrubbed from every corner of Chicago society.
Tonight was a celebration.
Not a high-society gala with thirty-four wealthy strangers and crystal champagne buckets, but a quiet, intimate dinner around the long mahogany banquet table.
There were only four people present.
Luca, Isabella, Sophie, and me.
At the center of the table sat a pink cardboard bakery box.
Sophie stood proudly on her wooden step stool at the head of the table, wearing a brand-new pink chef's apron that Isabella had sewn for her. In front of her was a platter piled high with twelve lopsided chocolate cupcakes covered in thick, messy vanilla frosting and an excessive amount of pink sprinkles.
"Are they ready, princess?" Luca asked, smiling as he adjusted his napkin.
"Almost, Daddy!" Sophie beamed, carefully placing the final cupcake in the center of the platter. "Mommy helped me mix the batter, and I did all the frosting myself!"
Isabella sat beside her husband, looking healthier by the day, her color returning, her eyes bright and full of life. She reached across the table and squeezed my hand.
"Thank you for everything, Hannah," Isabella said softly. "You kept my baby safe when I couldn't."
"I told you," I smiled, raising my glass of sparkling cider. "I'm Sophie's nanny. Protecting my favorite little baker is part of the job description."
Sophie hopped down from her step stool, carefully carrying a crooked cupcake on a small china plate, and walked over to me. She held it out with both hands, her little face glowing with pride.
"This one's yours, Hannah," she said seriously. "Because you didn't let the bad lady throw them in the trash."
I took the plate, my heart swelling until it felt too big for my chest. I took a bite of the cake—it was a little dense, a little too sweet, and the frosting was sliding sideways off the edge.
It was absolute perfection.
"It's the best cupcake I've ever had in my life, Sophie," I said, wiping a crumb from my chin.
Sophie giggled, running back to her parents as Luca pulled her up onto his lap, pressing a kiss to the top of her dark curls while Isabella leaned her head against his shoulder.
The candles flickered softly in the center of the table, casting a warm, golden glow across the room where no shadows could ever reach again.

And as I sat there watching them laugh, sharing stories and eating crooked chocolate cupcakes, I knew I wasn't just an employee anymore.
I was right where I belonged.
