Chapter 8 - THE ULTIMATUM ON THE CLIFF

Julian Vance’s polished leather shoes clicked against the damp concrete floor as he stopped ten feet away from us, his tailored suit jacket pristine despite the grim underground setting behind the generator plant. Beside him, Captain Adrian Ward kept his service revolver raised, the black muzzle aimed unblinkingly at my chest.
"I have to hand it to you, Ms. Voss," Vance said, his voice dripping with condescending admiration as he adjusted his gold-rimmed cufflinks. "Most people would have drowned within ten minutes in the Pacific swell. But crawling your way back to Blackwood Isle? That shows a distinct lack of self-preservation."
"You murdered my brother Marcus," I said, my voice steady, cutting through the hum of the generators. "And you planned to murder me and an innocent child just to protect a black-market pharmaceutical ring."
Vance didn't even blink at the accusation. He merely smiled, glancing sideways at the captain. "Marcus was an ambitious reporter who didn't know when to close his notebook. And you, my dear, were simply asking too many questions about passenger manifests that didn't concern you. Captain Ward merely carried out standard protocol for corporate security."
"Protocol?" Ward finally spoke, his voice gravelly and devoid of emotion. "People who threaten the stability of this vessel and everything we've built don't get second chances. Step away from the cell door, Mara. It's over."
Arthur stepped out of the open cell, placing himself between me and the barrel of the captain's gun. "Don't you touch her, Adrian! You've already destroyed enough lives for your precious empire. Leo is safe, and the federal maritime authorities already received the encrypted cargo manifests I uploaded to the mainland server before you locked me down here!"
Vance’s calm facade cracked for a fraction of a second, a flash of genuine panic crossing his eyes before he quickly regained his composure. "A bluff. The island's communication arrays are completely jammed."
"Not jammed enough," a sharp, mechanical voice crackled over the intercom speaker mounted on the concrete wall above us.
“Attention Blackwood facility. This is United States Coast Guard Cutter Valiant. You are surrounded by federal units. Power down your generators and surrender immediately.”
The color drained entirely from Captain Ward’s face. He turned his head toward the reinforced ceiling as the unmistakable deep thrum of heavy helicopter rotor blades began to shake the stone foundations of the subterranean bunker.
Vance cursed under his breath, taking a step back toward the stairwell. "Adrian, get the exit helicopter warmed up on the roof. Now!"
"You're not going anywhere, Vance," I said, lunging forward with a sudden burst of adrenaline. I grabbed the heavy steel security pipe leaning against the cell wall and hurled it directly across the walkway, catching Vance behind the knees.
He cried out, stumbling hard and crashing onto the concrete floor.
Captain Ward whipped his gun around, aiming it at me with cold fury in his eyes. "You stubborn, interfering fool—"
Before Ward could pull the trigger, a heavy iron wrench came flying out of the darkness behind him, striking his wrist with a sharp crack. The service revolver slipped from his numb fingers, clattering loudly against the stone floor.
Arthur lunged forward, tackling the captain into the iron bars of the empty cell.
Above us, the heavy steel doors of the subterranean bunker blew open with a deafening blast as federal agents in tactical gear swarmed down the stairs, flashlights blazing, weapons drawn.
"Federal agents! Nobody move!"
May you like
As agents swarmed the corridor, pinning Vance and Ward to the floor in handcuffs, I let out a long, shuddering breath, sliding down against the cold wall. It was finally over. The nightmare was ending.
