Chapter 1 - “THE CAPTAIN KICKED ME OFF HIS SHIP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PACIFIC OCEAN—THEN STOOD THERE WATCHING AS I DISAPPEARED BENEATH THE WAVES. I HEARD SOMEONE SCREAM, ‘MAN OVERBOARD!’ BUT CAPTAIN ADRIAN WARD DIDN'T MOVE TO SAVE ME. HE DIDN'T EVEN LOOK SURPRISED. AND AS I FOUGHT TO STAY ALIVE IN THE FREEZING WATER, I REALIZED SOMETHING TERRIFYING: HE HADN'T LOST HIS TEMPER. HE HAD WAITED UNTIL WE WERE FAR ENOUGH FROM LAND TO MAKE SURE I WOULD NEVER COME BACK.”

I never imagined the man responsible for keeping everyone safe aboard that ship would be the one who tried to kill me.
My name is Mara Voss.
And the last thing I remember before falling into the Pacific Ocean was the expression on Captain Adrian Ward's face.
Not anger.
Not panic.
Something much worse.
Determination.
It happened so quickly that nobody had time to react.
One moment, I was standing near the safety railing on the open deck, the afternoon sun reflecting off the endless blue water.
The wind was strong enough to pull strands of hair across my face.
I could hear the steady rumble of the ship's engines beneath my feet.
Then Captain Ward approached.
I turned toward him.
And without saying a word, he kicked me hard in the stomach.
The force knocked the breath from my lungs.
I stumbled backward.
My hip struck the metal railing with such force that pain shot through my entire body.
I threw out my arm.
My fingers reached for the upper bar.
For one desperate second, I thought I had it.
But my hand slipped.
And suddenly, there was nothing beneath my feet.
Someone screamed.
I remember looking up as I fell.
Captain Ward stood at the railing.
Several crew members were staring at him in disbelief.
Nobody moved.
Nobody seemed to understand what had just happened.
And the captain?
He watched me fall.
I searched his face for some sign of regret.
There was none.
Then the ship disappeared above me.
And the ocean came rushing toward my body.
The impact was unbearable.
Freezing water swallowed me whole.
For a moment, I couldn't tell which direction was up.
Everything became bubbles, darkness, and a strange green light filtering through the water.
My chest burned.
I couldn't breathe.
I tried opening my eyes, but the salt stung so badly that I squeezed them shut again.
Panic threatened to take over.
Then something inside me remembered what to do.
*Move your legs.*
*Find the light.*
*Get to the surface.*
I kicked desperately.
My arms pulled through the water.
Every second felt impossibly long.
I needed air.
I needed to breathe.
And then, finally, my head broke through the surface.
I gasped.
Coughed.
Swallowed seawater.
Then gasped again.
"HELP!"
My voice sounded tiny against the wind.
The ship was already moving away.
I could see people gathering along the upper railing.
Some were pointing toward me.
Others were running.
Then a man's voice carried across the water.
**"MAN OVERBOARD!"**
I tried waving.
"I'm here! Please!"
I expected the ship to slow down.
I expected someone to throw a life ring.
I expected the captain to order a rescue.
After all, that was his job.
He was supposed to protect the people aboard his vessel.
Instead, I watched the distance between us grow.
The ship continued forward.
I kicked harder, trying to keep my head above the waves.
"PLEASE!"
Another swell lifted me.
Then dropped me.
For a moment, the ship disappeared behind the water.
When I saw it again, it looked even farther away.
My clothes were becoming heavy.
My stomach ached where Ward's boot had struck me.
And every breath felt like a battle.
But the physical pain wasn't what frightened me most.
It was the memory of his face.
The way he'd approached without hesitation.
The way he'd watched me fall.
He hadn't been trying to scare me.
He hadn't been trying to teach me a lesson.
**Captain Adrian Ward had wanted me dead.**
And he had chosen the one place where a person could disappear without leaving a body behind.
The middle of the Pacific Ocean.
I glanced around.
Nothing.
No nearby boat.
No land.
Only enormous stretches of dark blue water.
I tried to calm my breathing.
*Don't waste your strength, Mara.*
I had to stay afloat.
I had to survive long enough for someone to come back.
Then I remembered what had happened shortly before Ward approached me.
Something aboard that ship had changed the moment I began asking questions.
Questions the captain clearly didn't want answered.
I hadn't understood his reaction then.
Now I did.
Whatever he was hiding, he believed I had become dangerous enough to silence.
I looked toward the ship one more time.
The people along the railing were still there.
But the vessel wasn't turning around.
And somewhere aboard it stood the man who had just tried to murder me.
I forced my aching arms to keep moving.
Because dying in that water would mean more than losing my life.
It would mean Captain Ward could tell whatever story he wanted.
An unfortunate fall.
A terrible accident.
A passenger who had somehow gone overboard.
And the people who had witnessed what happened might be too frightened to contradict him.
But I was still alive.
And I remembered every second.
**If I survived, Captain Adrian Ward would have to explain why he'd kicked me off his ship in front of his own crew.**
The question was whether I could stay alive long enough to make him answer.
Then, as another cold wave rose in front of me, I noticed something moving in the distance.
Something small.
Something that appeared to have come from the ship.
I squinted against the sunlight.
And my heart began pounding again.
May you like
**Had someone finally come back to save me?**
**Or was Captain Ward making sure I never reached shore alive?**
