Chapter 6 - THE LOCKET IN THE ARCHIVES

The clatter of the fire extinguisher echoing off the stone corridor sounded like a gunshot in the silent subterranean hallway. Footsteps charged around the corner faster than I could react—heavy, purposeful boots hitting the concrete with terrifying speed.

"Hey! Who's there?" a gruff voice barked from the shadows.

I didn't hesitate. I snatched the heavy brass security keycard and Leo’s mother's silver locket off the workbench just as a flashlight beam sliced across the wall where I had been standing a second before. Ducking low beneath a row of copper steam pipes, I bolted through a heavy steel service door marked SECTOR B — ARCHIVES, slamming it shut behind me and turning the keycard in the electronic lock just as a heavy shoulder slammed against the exterior panel.

BEEP-BEEP. The green light on the lock flashed red. Access denied.

"The lock's jammed!" shouted a voice from the other side. "Get the plasma cutter! She's in the lower archives!"

I spun around, chest heaving, and found myself standing not in a damp utility room, but in a vast, climate-controlled subterranean library filled with rows of towering metal shelving units. The air smelled of old paper, ozone, and floor wax. Computer terminals glowed softly in the center of the room, displaying endless lines of financial ledgers and shipping routes.

I was trapped in the inner sanctum of Vance’s illegal empire.

Clutching the silver locket in my palm, I hurried down the central aisle, looking for another exit. That was when I noticed a photograph pinned to one of the corkboards near the computer terminals. My steps slowed to a dead stop, and a chill settled deep into my bones.

It was an old family photograph, slightly yellowed at the edges. It showed a younger, smiling Captain Adrian Ward standing arm-in-arm with a woman who bore an uncanny, striking resemblance to little Leo—and standing beside them, with his arm resting friendly on Ward's shoulder, was Julian Vance himself.

The bitter rivalry and tension I had witnessed between the captain and the investor on the ship was an elaborate, carefully constructed facade. They weren't reluctant partners caught up in a desperate smuggling scheme; they were old college friends and co-conspirators who had been running illicit biological and pharmaceutical operations across international waters for over a decade.

And Leo wasn't just the random daughter of a ship mechanic.

She was Adrian Ward’s biological niece—the only living heir to the Blackwood estate and the vast trust fund Vance had embezzled when Ward's brother had mysteriously disappeared five years ago at sea.

He didn't just try to kill me because I saw the cargo manifest, the terrifying realization washed over me. He tried to kill me because I was sitting at his dinner table asking too many questions about the missing Blackwood family inheritance.

Before I could process the full weight of the deception, a loud, piercing shriek of melting metal echoed from the entrance door. The security team was using the plasma cutter. Sparks showered across the floor outside as the steel plate began to give way.

I ran to the nearest computer terminal, desperately hoping to find a way to download the shipping records or send an emergency distress signal to the mainland. The screen was unlocked, displaying an open digital ledger titled PROJECT VANGUARD — ASSET TERMINATION.

My eyes scanned the list of names under the active file. At the very bottom, highlighted in bright red text, were two names:1. Marcus Voss (Terminated - Pacific Trench, 2021)2. Mara Voss (Pending Termination - Blackwood Sector B)

My breath caught in my throat. Marcus Voss. My older brother, an investigative journalist who had mysteriously vanished four years ago while researching a travel piece on luxury cruise liners in the Pacific. Everyone had told me he fell overboard during a storm. Everyone had accepted the official coast guard report.

Except he hadn't died in a storm. He had discovered the exact same smuggling and embezzlement ring, and Captain Ward had executed him in the exact same manner he had tried to execute me.

Suddenly, a loud CLANG rang out as the heavy archive door was kicked inward, crashing onto the tile floor in a shower of sparks and white smoke.

Footsteps rushed into the room.

"Clear the aisles!" a voice shouted. "Find her and finish it!"
