Chapter 9 - THE SUNRISE

Six months later, the Moretti estate was unrecognizable in its warmth.

Vanessa was currently serving a twenty-year sentence in a federal penitentiary. Arthur Vance had recovered from his injury and officially retired, spending his days fishing with his grandchildren.
The scholarship foundation had been completely restructured under Mr. Harrison and Vincent. It now fully funded the education of over fifty children of working-class families in the city.

Lily stepped out, wearing a bright smile and a university sweatshirt. She had just finished her first week of pre-med classes.

Vincent stepped out of his study, holding a stack of files. He looked at the two women, a profound sense of peace settling over him.
He had lost a brother to greed, and a fiancée to betrayal. But he had gained something much more valuable.
He had gained a true family.
“Welcome home, Dr. Bennett,” Vincent smiled warmly.
Lily laughed, a bright, joyous sound that echoed through the grand halls of the estate.
“Not yet, Mr. Vincent,” she said. “But soon.”

I closed the front door, leaving the past outside where it belonged. The house was safe. The dignity of the women who held it together had been restored. And for the first time in my twenty-six years here, the Moretti family was exactly what it was always meant to be.
Whole.
