Chapter 4 - THE LOCKED DOORS

Three men in dark suits stepped out from the shadows of the hallway. They were Vanessa’s private security detail, hired under the guise of protecting the estate.

Now, they were standing in front of the locked doors, their hands resting ominously on their holstered weapons.

“Nobody is leaving,” Vanessa announced. Her voice had lost all its forced elegance. It was cold, sharp, and desperate.

“You’re locking us in?” Mr. Harrison asked in disbelief. “Vanessa, you’ve lost your mind. Vincent is the boss of this family!”

“Vincent is soft,” Vanessa sneered. “He turned this family’s legacy into charities and scholarships. Dominic understood power. Dominic understood control.”

“If Dominic understood power,” Vincent said, taking a slow step toward her, “why did he hide you? Why did he let you pretend to be a stranger when you met me?”

“Because he needed an inside man,” Vanessa shot back. “He needed someone to monitor the accounts while he rebuilt his network overseas. I was supposed to marry you, inherit the foundation, and funnel the money back to him.”

“So he is alive,” Vincent confirmed, the realization heavy in his chest.

“He was,” Vanessa said coldly. “Until last month. He got sick. Really sick. And he died in a hospital in Geneva. For real this time.”

She looked at Rebecca. The young girl was sobbing now.

“Stop crying, Rebecca,” Vanessa snapped. “You’re a Moretti. Act like one. Yes, Dominic was your father. And yes, I am your mother. We sent you to live with my sister so Vincent’s enemies wouldn't use you against us.”

The missing piece fell into place.

Vanessa hadn't rigged the scholarship for a random niece. She was using the foundation’s money to secure her own daughter’s inheritance before Vincent found out the truth.

“The money belongs to her,” Vanessa declared, pointing at Rebecca. “Not to the granddaughter of a maid.”

Lily, Rose’s granddaughter, finally spoke.

“We don't want your money,” Lily said, her voice shaking but defiant. She stood up, pulling the college acceptance letter from beneath her napkin. “My grandmother worked for everything we have. You just steal it.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed. “Shut her up.”

One of the security men took a step toward Lily.

I didn't think. I reacted.

I grabbed the heavy crystal water pitcher from the table and smashed it directly across the security guard's face.

The man roared in pain, stumbling backward as water and glass shattered across the floor.

“Catherine!” Vincent shouted.

But I didn't stop. I reached into the guard’s jacket as he fell and pulled out the heavy brass ring of estate keys.

I tossed them instantly to Vincent.

“I changed the locks on the East Wing this morning, Mr. Vincent!” I yelled. “Her men don't have the new master key!”

Vincent caught the keys mid-air. But as he turned toward the secondary door, a gunshot blew the wooden doorframe to splinters.
