Chapter 8 - The Ballroom Confrontation

The Plaza Hotel ballroom was a sea of black tuxedos, glittering diamonds, and the quiet, dangerous hum of New York’s most powerful crime families. A string quartet played softly in the corner, masking the sound of illegal empires being carved up over champagne.
At the head table, Vincenzo Costello sat like a king.
He had changed into a pristine tuxedo, leaving the ash and blood of the carriage house behind. He was holding court, telling the heads of the Barone, Lucchese, and Moretti families a fabricated tale of Gabriel’s treason.
"The boy went mad," Vincenzo lied smoothly, sipping his wine. "He tried to kill me tonight to seize his mother’s inheritance early. I had to put him down. It breaks a father's heart."
"Does it?"
The voice echoed across the massive ballroom, sharp as broken glass.
The music abruptly stopped. Three hundred heads turned toward the grand mahogany doors.
Gabriel stood there, bruised, covered in soot, but radiating an aura of absolute dominance. Beside him stood Chloe, wearing her damp, cheap navy dress, holding her chin high. And slightly behind them, flanked by two loyal Costello guards Gabriel had rallied, stood Beatrice.
Vincenzo’s face went entirely white. He dropped his wineglass. It shattered on the marble floor.
"Guards!" Vincenzo screamed, pointing his gold cane. "Kill him! He is an assassin!"
A dozen men reached for their jackets.
"Stop!" Don Barone, the oldest and most respected boss in the room, raised a hand. The guards froze. Barone looked at Gabriel. "You bring a waitress and a deaf woman to a Commission meeting, Gabriel? Have you lost your mind?"
Gabriel didn't answer. He stepped aside.
Chloe walked forward. The entire room watched her. She felt the terrifying weight of their stares, but the memory of Leo gave her strength. She walked straight to Don Barone’s table and dropped the heavy black ledger directly onto his plate.
"What is this?" Barone grunted.
Chloe didn't speak English. She looked at Don Barone, a man born in the old country, and spoke in the flawless, mountain dialect of Sicily.
"That is the truth," Chloe said, her voice ringing out clearly in the silent room. "Vincenzo Costello did not build his empire on loyalty. He built it on your blood. Page forty-two. Read who ordered the hit on your brother in 1998."
A ripple of shock washed through the old-guard bosses. The girl in the cheap dress spoke the mother tongue better than half the men in the room.
Barone opened the ledger. He flipped to page forty-two.
For ten agonizing seconds, the ballroom was dead silent.
Then, Barone slowly closed the book. He looked up at Vincenzo. His eyes were empty, cold voids.
"You told me the Russians killed my brother," Barone whispered.
"It’s a forgery!" Vincenzo panicked, backing away from the table, his cane clattering against a chair. "The girl is a liar! She’s the daughter of a thieving maid!"
"She is the daughter of a hero," Beatrice suddenly signed, stepping forward.
Gabriel translated his mother’s signs, his voice booming across the room. "My mother says Vincenzo is a coward who ordered his own infant son murdered because he was born deaf. Elena Bennett saved his life. And Vincenzo has spent twenty-six years trying to bury the truth."
The room erupted into furious murmurs. Killing a rival was business. Ordering the death of your own disabled child was an unforgivable sin against the sacred rules of family.
Vincenzo realized he had lost. The bosses were looking at him not with fear, but with disgust.
With a roar of desperate rage, Vincenzo pulled a concealed silver revolver from his jacket and leveled it directly at Chloe’s chest. "I should have killed you and your mother both!"
He pulled the trigger.
Gabriel moved faster than thought. He threw himself in front of Chloe.
The gunshot deafened the room. Gabriel jerked violently as the bullet tore through his shoulder. He collapsed onto the marble floor.
"Gabriel!" Chloe screamed, dropping to her knees and pressing her hands against his bleeding chest.
Before Vincenzo could fire again, a dozen guns clicked simultaneously. Every single guard in the room—Barone’s men, Lucchese’s men, and even Vincenzo’s own loyalists—had their weapons drawn and aimed directly at Vincenzo’s head.
Don Barone stood up, adjusting his cuffs. "Vincenzo Costello. You are stripped of your name, your territory, and your life. Take him out back."
Four men grabbed Vincenzo, dragging the screaming, cursing old man out the service doors.
Chloe ignored it all. She ripped the fabric of her dress, pressing it against Gabriel’s wound. Blood poured over her fingers. "Gabriel, stay with me. Please, stay with me."

Gabriel looked up at her, a weak, bloodstained smile crossing his face. He reached up, his scarred knuckles gently brushing a tear from her cheek.
"You have... terrible table manners, waitress," he whispered, before his eyes rolled back and he lost consciousness.
