Chapter 4 - The Photograph in the Library

Chloe stared at Beatrice’s trembling hands, her mind violently rejecting what she had just translated.
He ordered him drowned.
Gabriel picked up the faded photograph, his knuckles turning white. He stared at the image of his mother weeping beside Elena, who held the swaddled newborn. For a man who built his life on absolute control, Gabriel looked as though the floor had just vanished beneath his feet.
"A brother," Gabriel whispered, his voice cracking. He looked at Beatrice. "You told me I had a baby sister who died of a fever. You told me the fever took her in the night."
I had to lie, Beatrice signed, her face crumbling with decades of suppressed agony. Vincenzo told the family the baby died of illness. But he despised weakness. When he realized the baby did not respond to sound, he told his men to take him to the river. He said a Costello heir could not be a cripple.
Chloe felt physically sick. She thought of Leo. Her brilliant, funny, deaf brother who had loved horror movies and cheated at cards. She thought of how fiercely she had protected him from cruel strangers. To think a father could look at his own child and order his death...
"But my mother," Chloe said, pointing to Elena in the photograph. "Why is my mother holding him?"
Beatrice wiped her eyes. Elena was my interpreter. She was the only person in this house who treated me like a human being. When Vincenzo gave the order, Elena took the baby. She promised to run far away. To hide him. To raise him as her own.
The room went entirely still.
Chloe couldn't breathe. The air in the dining room had turned to lead.
To raise him as her own.
"No," Chloe whispered, backing away from the table. "No, that's impossible. My brother was Leo. He was my blood."
But the math exploded in her head. Leo had died at twenty-four, two years ago. That meant he was born twenty-six years ago. The exact date stamped on the photograph.
Gabriel turned to Chloe, his eyes wide, realizing the exact same thing. "Chloe. Your brother... Leo. He was deaf?"
"He wasn't your brother!" Chloe shouted, a desperate, protective anger surging through her. "He was mine! My mother raised him! We lived in a tiny apartment and ate rice for dinner, and she loved him! She wouldn't just..."
She stopped. She looked at the jagged silver bracelet on her wrist.
I will bury you next to her, Vincenzo had threatened. If I find out she left him anything...
"My God," Gabriel breathed, stepping toward her. "Chloe, Leo was my brother. Elena saved his life."
Before Chloe could process the sheer magnitude of the revelation, Tony burst through the dining room doors, his face pale.
"Boss," Tony said, breathless. "The perimeter alarms just tripped. All of them. The gates are locked from the outside."
Gabriel instantly shifted from a shattered son to a mob boss. He pulled a firearm from the back of his waistband. "Who locked them?"
"Vincenzo," Tony replied. "He didn't go to the guest house. He went to the security pavilion. He’s locked down the estate. And half the guards out there... they're taking orders from him."
Gabriel cursed violently. He grabbed Chloe’s hand. "We have to move to the library. Now. It’s a reinforced panic room."
He practically dragged her and Beatrice down the dark mahogany hallway. The house, minutes ago a quiet sanctuary, suddenly felt like a tomb. Footsteps echoed heavily on the floor above them. Vincenzo’s loyalists were already inside.
They reached the heavy steel-reinforced doors of the library. Gabriel shoved them inside and slammed the doors shut, throwing three deadbolts just as someone pounded fiercely on the wood from the other side.
"Open the door, Gabriel!" Vincenzo’s voice roared through the heavy wood. "Give me the girl! Elena stole millions from my private safe before she ran with the defect! The girl knows where it is!"
Gabriel looked at Chloe, his chest heaving. "Is that true? Did your mother have millions of dollars?"
"No!" Chloe cried. "We were broke! We couldn't even afford Leo's hearing aids until I started waiting tables!"
Beatrice rushed to the massive mahogany desk in the center of the library. She frantically began pulling open drawers, tossing papers onto the floor.
Help me! she signed to Chloe. Elena didn't steal money! She stole the proof!
Chloe ran to the desk. "Proof of what?"
Beatrice slammed a false bottom in the drawer, revealing a hidden compartment. Inside was a leather-bound journal and a pristine, folded birth certificate.
Chloe grabbed the certificate. It belonged to Leo. But listed under the father's name wasn't a blank space, as her mother had always claimed.
It read: Gabriel Costello.

Chloe stared at the paper, the world spinning violently. "Gabriel... this says you’re the father. Not Vincenzo."
Gabriel froze, his gun aimed at the door. He slowly turned his head. "What?"
