Chapter 8 - THE FAMILY HEIRLOOM

The tires of the sedan screeched as the driver slammed on the brakes in front of the hospital’s emergency entrance.
I didn't wait for him to open the door. I threw myself out of the car, clutching the manila envelope against my chest, and ran through the sliding glass doors.
The lobby was in total chaos.
Police officers were shouting into radios, nurses were barricading doors, and patients were being ushered down the opposite corridor.
I sprinted toward the elevators, ignoring a security guard who tried to grab my arm.
"You can't go up there, miss!" he yelled. "There's a hostage situation on the fourth floor!"
"That’s my fiancé!" I screamed, shoving past him and leaping into the open elevator car just as the doors began to close.
I hit the button for the fourth floor.
The ride up felt like an eternity. I leaned against the metal wall, gasping for air, staring at the faded airplane ticket in my hand.
Elena Montenegro.
Mateo's mother.
She had faked her death to escape her abusive husband. She had let David the lawyer plunder the family fortune to pay for her new life. But why come back now? Why try to kill her own son?
The elevator dinged. The doors slid open.
The fourth-floor hallway was eerily silent.
At the far end of the corridor, outside Mateo’s room, stood three armed police officers with their weapons drawn. Álvaro was standing behind them, his face ashen, pleading with a negotiator.
"Lucía!" Álvaro gasped when he saw me. "Get back!"
"Let me through," I demanded, pushing past the officers.
"Ma'am, step back!" the lead officer barked, blocking my path. "The suspect is highly unstable. She has a surgical blade against the patient's carotid artery."
"She’s his mother," I said, my voice eerily calm. I held up the envelope. "And I have what she wants."
Before the officer could stop me, I stepped in front of the open doorway of Mateo's room.
The sight inside made my blood run cold.
Mateo was awake.
He was propped up slightly against the pillows, his face pale and exhausted, the oxygen mask pushed down around his neck. His dark eyes locked onto mine the second I appeared in the doorway.
Lucía, his lips mouthed silently.
Sitting in the chair next to his bed was a woman in her late sixties. She wore a sleek black trench coat, her silver hair pulled back into a severe bun. She was beautiful, elegant, and terrifying.
In her right hand, resting gently against the side of Mateo's neck, was a silver surgical scalpel.
"Hello, Lucía," Elena Montenegro said smoothly. She didn't look like a woman who had been dead for ten years. She looked like a queen holding court. "I am sorry to ruin your wedding day. But weddings in this family never end well."
"Let him go," I said, stepping slowly into the room.
"I can't do that," Elena sighed. "My son has become too much like his father. He was going to take over the company today. He was going to expose my arrangement with David. If the world finds out I am alive, the authorities will seize the assets I took. I will have nothing."
"You already have nothing," I said, taking another step closer. "You abandoned your son. You let Julian and Sofía tear this family apart. And now you’re willing to kill Mateo for money?"
Elena’s eyes hardened. "I survived a monster for twenty years. I earned my freedom. I won't let Mateo take it away from me."
"He never wanted to take it away from you," I said, my voice trembling with emotion. "He just wanted the truth."
I lifted the manila envelope and tossed it onto the edge of Mateo’s bed.
"The bank records," I said loudly. "And your airplane ticket from ten years ago. It’s all in there. The only evidence that ties you to the embezzlement. Take it. Take it and disappear."
Elena looked at the envelope. For a fraction of a second, the scalpel wavered.
That was all Mateo needed.
Despite his injuries, despite being unconscious for hours, my fiancé reached up with lightning speed. He grabbed his mother's wrist and twisted it away from his neck.
The scalpel clattered to the floor.
The police surged into the room.
Within seconds, they had Elena pinned against the wall, slapping handcuffs onto her wrists. She didn't scream. She didn't fight. She just stared at Mateo with cold, dead eyes.
"You always were weak, Mateo," she spat as the officers dragged her away. "Just like your father."
"No," Mateo rasped, his voice rough and dry. "I am nothing like him."
The room cleared out, leaving only Álvaro, Mateo, and me.
I stood frozen, staring at the man I loved. He was battered, bruised, and connected to a dozen machines.
But he was alive.
I rushed to the side of the bed and fell to my knees, burying my face against his chest. I sobbed, the fear and exhaustion of the last twelve hours finally breaking over me.
Mateo’s hand came down, stroking my hair gently.
"I'm so sorry, mi amor," he whispered. "I'm so sorry I ruined the wedding."
I looked up at him, wiping my tears. "You didn't ruin anything. I married you today. In this room. While you were sleeping."
Mateo smiled, a weak, beautiful smile.
Then he looked past me, to his uncle.
Álvaro stepped forward slowly. He looked older, broken by the betrayals of his sister, his nephew, and his niece. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy, gold signet ring.
The Montenegro family heirloom.
The symbol of the chairman of the board.
Álvaro gently placed the ring on Mateo’s blanket.
"I was a fool to fight you, Mateo," Álvaro said softly, tears in his eyes. "You are the only one worthy of this family. You protected your son. You protected Lucía. You protected the company. It’s yours. All of it."
Mateo looked at the ring, then at his uncle.
"We do it together, Uncle," Mateo said. "I need you."
Álvaro nodded, weeping quietly, and left the room to give us privacy.
I sat on the edge of the bed and took Mateo’s hand.
"There's something you need to know," Mateo said softly, his eyes searching mine. "About a little boy."
I placed my fingers over his lips.
May you like
"I know," I whispered, smiling through my tears. "I know about Leo. And I can't wait to be his mother."
Mateo’s eyes filled with tears, and he pulled me down for a kiss.
