Chapter 6 - THE VAULT

I screamed, spinning around in the pitch blackness, my wedding dress rustling loudly in the echoing vault.

"Who's there?!" I shouted, backing up until my spine hit the cold steel of the safety deposit boxes.

A flashlight beam clicked on, blinding me.

I threw my arm over my eyes, squinting against the harsh glare. The figure holding the light stepped forward, moving with a calm, deliberate grace.

The light lowered, illuminating his face.

It was David Vargas. The family lawyer.

He was wearing an immaculate charcoal suit, a soft smirk playing on his lips. In his left hand, he held the flashlight. In his right, he held a sleek black cane with a silver handle.

"Hello, Lucía," David said, his voice as smooth as velvet. "You really are a remarkably stubborn woman. Most brides would be weeping at the altar right now."

"You locked us in," I said, my heart pounding in my ears. "How did you know I was here?"

"I am the executor of the Montenegro estate," David replied smoothly. "The bank manager called me the moment a woman in a ruined wedding dress walked in demanding access to Julian's box. I was merely blocks away."

He stepped closer, shining the light on the open metal drawer in front of me. He looked at the bearer bonds, the forged documents, and finally, the velvet jewelry box I was clutching against my chest.

"Julian was a useful idiot," David sighed, shaking his head. "He actually believed he was the mastermind. He thought he was using my office to siphon the money. He didn't realize I was letting him do it, just so I would have a perfect scapegoat when the estate was finally bled dry."

"You orchestrated everything," I breathed, the pieces finally snapping together. "You told Julian how to hide the money. You manipulated Sofía’s jealousy. You’re the reason my fiancé almost died today."

"I am a businessman, Lucía," David said, stepping closer. "Mateo's father built an empire, but he was a fool. He planned to leave it all to a boy who cares more about his little secret son and his pretty bride than expanding the company."

My grip on the velvet box tightened. "You stole my bracelet in Paris."

David chuckled. "I didn't steal it. I found it. You left it by the hotel pool. I kept it as a souvenir. But when Julian started getting sloppy with his embezzlement, I decided to plant it in his safety deposit box. A little insurance policy. If anyone ever found the box, the police would assume Julian had a sick obsession with his brother-in-law's fiancé."

"You're a monster," I said.

"I prefer the term 'opportunist'," David countered. He held out his hand. "Now, give me the bracelet, Lucía. And the documents. If you cooperate, I might let you walk out of this vault alive."

I looked at his outstretched hand.

I looked at the heavy metal door, sealed tight.

And then I looked down at the velvet box in my hands. The tiny address engraved on the clasp of the bracelet.

Calle de los Olivos, 14.

Why would David engrave a random address on a bracelet he planned to use as a frame-up?

Unless... he didn't engrave it.

"You didn't put this address on here," I said, my voice steadying. "Mateo did."

David's smile faltered. The flashlight beam wavered for a fraction of a second.

"Give me the box, Lucía," he ordered, his voice dropping its friendly facade.

"Mateo found this box before you knew he did," I realized, the truth washing over me. "He found my bracelet. And he engraved the address of where he hid the real evidence against you, just in case something happened to him!"

"Give it to me!" David lunged forward, swinging his cane.

I ducked, and the silver handle slammed into the metal safety deposit boxes with a deafening crash.

I didn't think. I reacted.

I shoved the heavy metal drawer entirely out of its slot and hurled it directly at David's chest.

It hit him hard. He stumbled backward with a gasp, dropping the flashlight. The vault went dark again as the flashlight rolled across the floor, its beam spinning wildly against the walls.

I scrambled on my hands and knees, my heavy dress tangling around my legs. I found the flashlight, snatched it up, and ran to the vault door.

There was an emergency release lever on the inside. I grabbed it with both hands and pulled down with all my body weight.

The heavy door clicked and swung open.

I bolted out of the vault into the brightly lit bank lobby, screaming for the manager.

"Call the police!" I shouted at the terrified bank tellers. "Lock the vault!"

Two security guards drew their weapons and rushed past me. They slammed the vault door shut, trapping David inside, and spun the heavy locking wheel.

I didn't wait to watch him get arrested.

I ran out of the bank, clutching the velvet box in my hand.

I found Álvaro’s driver waiting by the curb. I threw open the back door and climbed in.

"Where to, Miss?" the driver asked, alarmed by my frantic state.

I looked down at the engraving on my bracelet.

"Calle de los Olivos, 14," I said. "Drive fast."
