Chapter 8 - THE LEDGER'S SECRET

Isabella’s scream echoed off the ruined log walls, terrifying and raw.

She swung the heavy iron fireplace poker wildly in the air, keeping Luca at bay. She was acting entirely on adrenaline and pure maternal terror.

“Isabella, stop,” Luca pleaded, his voice breaking. He kept his hands raised, palms open, showing he was unarmed. “It’s me. It’s Luca. You’re safe now. I’m here to take you home.”

“Liar!” Isabella shrieked, tears cutting clean lines through the soot on her face. “Vincent told me you sent them! He told me you found out about the boy and sent your men to execute us both!”

My heart broke into a million pieces.

For three years, Vincent Bellini had kept this poor woman locked in a cabin, feeding her lies. He had convinced her that the husband she adored had become a monster who wanted her and her innocent child dead.

“He lied to you,” Luca said softly, taking one slow, agonizing step forward. “Vincent lied to you, Isabella. He lied to me. He told me you died in the car crash. I buried an empty casket. I mourned you every single day.”

Isabella shook her head frantically, her grip on the iron poker trembling. “No. No, Vincent said you ordered the hit on my cousin, Arthur. He said you knew I had Arthur’s ledger!”

“I didn't know anything about the ledger until tonight,” Luca swore, tears streaming down his face. “Vincent killed Arthur to cover up his own theft. He used the ledger to blackmail you. He kept you hidden so he could marry Vanessa into our family and steal my empire from the inside.”

Isabella stared at him, the desperate, manic panic in her eyes slowly beginning to fracture.

“I would never hurt you,” Luca whispered, dropping completely to his knees in the snow, making himself as small and non-threatening as possible. “I would rather die a thousand times than let a single hair on your head be harmed. Please. Please, Isabella. Come back to me.”

Isabella’s lip trembled. She looked at the massive, ruthless mafia boss kneeling in the snow before her, weeping openly, begging for his wife. It didn't match the monster Vincent had painted.

“Isabella,” I said softly, stepping out from behind Luca into the beam of the flashlight.

Isabella gasped, her eyes widening as she recognized me.

“Hannah?” she breathed, lowering the iron poker a fraction of an inch.

“It’s me,” I smiled, fresh tears spilling down my frozen cheeks. “Lily is safe, Isabella. She’s at the estate. She still remembers the lullaby you made up. She paints a little blue star on all her drawings for you.”

The mention of Lily completely broke her.

Isabella dropped the iron poker. It clattered loudly against the frozen dirt floor.

She let out a soul-shattering sob and collapsed to her knees, burying her face in her dirty, freezing hands.

Luca didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, wrapping his massive arms around her, pulling her fiercely against his chest. He buried his face in her matted hair, crying, holding her as if he would never, ever let her go again.

Isabella clung to him, her fingers digging desperately into his heavy winter coat, sobbing his name over and over.

I looked past them, into the dark corner of the ruined cabin.

The little boy, three years old, wearing an oversized winter jacket, was watching them with wide, curious eyes. He didn't look afraid. He had Luca’s dark hair and Isabella’s bright, intelligent eyes.

He was beautiful.

I walked over and gently knelt in front of him.

“Hi there,” I whispered, offering him a warm smile. “I’m Hannah.”

The little boy blinked, then reached out and touched the shiny silver button on my coat. “Hi.”

“What’s your name, sweetheart?” I asked.

The boy looked at his mother, who was still weeping in his father’s arms, and then looked back at me.

“Arthur,” he said proudly.

Isabella had named him after the cousin who died trying to protect their family.

Suddenly, the crackle of a radio shattered the emotional reunion.

Marco stepped into the ruins, his rifle raised, his face grim.

“Boss,” Marco interrupted urgently. “We have a serious problem.”

Luca slowly pulled back from Isabella, keeping one arm securely around her waist. He looked at his security chief. “What is it, Marco?”

“I just got off the comms with the estate security,” Marco said, his voice tight. “Vincent Bellini is gone.”

Luca’s expression instantly hardened into stone. “Gone? I told the guards to lock him in the wine cellar!”

“They did,” Marco explained. “But Vincent wasn’t just a lawyer, Boss. He’s been moving cartel money for a decade. He called in a favor. A heavy hit squad breached the estate twenty minutes ago. They overwhelmed our perimeter guards and broke Vincent and Vanessa out of the cellar.”

My blood ran completely cold.

“The estate,” I panicked, grabbing Luca’s arm. “Lily! Lily is locked in her bedroom!”

Luca’s eyes widened in sheer terror.

“Marco,” Luca roared, pulling Isabella up and grabbing little Arthur. “Tell the pilot to fire up the rotors right now! Get us in the air!”

“Boss, there’s more,” Marco said, stopping Luca in his tracks. “Vincent didn’t just escape. Before he left the estate, he took something from the vault.”

“What vault?” Luca demanded.

“Your father’s private safe,” Marco said. “The one containing the bearer bonds.”

Luca froze. His father’s bearer bonds were worth nearly fifty million dollars in untraceable cash. It was the Moretti family’s emergency fund, locked away for decades.

“How the hell did Vincent open my father’s vault?” Luca shouted. “It requires a dual-key system! I have one key, and the other hasn't been seen since my father died!”

Isabella reached into her dirty, oversized coat. Her hand was trembling violently.

She pulled out a small, leather-bound notebook.

“He didn't need the key, Luca,” Isabella whispered, handing the notebook to her husband. “He had Arthur’s ledger.”

Luca took the notebook. He opened it.

“Arthur Rossi didn't just audit the shipping ports,” Isabella explained, her voice shaking. “He audited your father’s personal accounts. This ledger contains every password, every vault combination, every offshore routing number the Moretti family owns.”

“And Vincent knew you had it,” Luca realized, his eyes scanning the pages of infinite wealth.

“He tortured me for it for three years,” Isabella cried. “But I hid it inside the lining of my coat before the clinic. I never told him where it was.”

“Then how did he open the vault tonight?” Luca asked, completely bewildered.

Isabella looked at him, her eyes filling with a new, terrifying dread.

“Because, Luca,” Isabella whispered, “I wasn't the only one Arthur gave the codes to.”

I stared at her, my mind racing. “Who else knew the codes?”

Isabella turned her gaze slowly toward me.

“Hannah,” Isabella said softly, “when I went into early labor three years ago, I didn't call Vincent first. I called the estate. I spoke to the one person I trusted more than anyone else in the world to protect my secrets.”

May you like

Isabella pointed a trembling finger directly at Marco.

“I spoke to him.”
