Chapter 5 - THE WINE CELLAR

The heavy wooden door of the wine cellar groaned as Marco unlocked it.

The air inside was damp and freezing, smelling of aged oak and fear. The single bulb hanging from the vaulted stone ceiling cast long, dancing shadows against the rows of vintage bottles.

Vincent Bellini sat on a wooden crate in the center of the room, his expensive charcoal suit wrinkled and stained with dust. Vanessa huddled on the floor beside him, weeping silently, her mascara running in dark streaks down her face.

Luca stepped into the cellar. He didn't look angry anymore. He looked like a predator who had finally cornered his prey.

I stood in the doorway, my hands gripping the cold stone frame, watching the mafia boss I had worked for suddenly become something entirely different.

Luca tossed the tarnished silver pocket watch onto the stone floor at Vincent’s feet.

The heavy clack of the metal echoed off the walls.

Vincent flinched, looking down at the watch. The color drained from his face instantly.

“You told me Arthur Rossi stole four million dollars and fled to South America,” Luca said, his voice dangerously soft. “But his watch was hidden in your daughter’s jewelry box.”

Vincent opened his mouth, but no sound came out.

“Where is Arthur, Vincent?” Luca asked, taking a slow step forward.

“He’s dead, Luca,” Vanessa sobbed from the floor. “My father had him killed.”

“Shut up, Vanessa!” Vincent hissed, kicking violently at the stone floor near her.

Luca drew his gun in a flash, pressing the barrel against Vincent’s temple with enough force to snap the older man’s head back.

“She’s telling the truth, isn’t she?” Luca growled. “You killed Arthur.”

“He was going to ruin everything!” Vincent choked out, his arrogance completely shattered. “Arthur found the offshore accounts I set up. He found out I was skimming from your shipping ports. He was going to bring the ledger to you!”

“So you murdered him,” Luca said, the pieces of the three-year-old puzzle finally locking into place. “And you framed him for the missing money.”

“I had to protect my firm, Luca! I had to protect my family!”

“Your family?” Luca roared, the sudden explosion of sound terrifying in the enclosed space. “What about my family, Vincent? What did Arthur Rossi have to do with Isabella?”

Vincent squeezed his eyes shut, trembling violently.

“Tell me!” Luca bellowed, cocking the hammer of the gun.

“Isabella found out!” Vanessa screamed, scrambling away from her father. “Luca, please, don’t shoot! I’ll tell you everything!”

Luca didn't lower the gun, but his eyes shifted to Vanessa.

“Isabella wasn't having an affair,” Vanessa wept, confirming the lie Vincent had spun earlier. “She was perfectly loyal to you. The baby she was carrying was yours.”

My heart broke at the words. Isabella had been pregnant with Luca’s son. A son he had never known existed.

“Then why hide it?” Luca asked, his voice cracking with the agonizing weight of the truth.

“Because Arthur Rossi was Isabella’s cousin,” Vanessa cried. “When Arthur realized my father was going to kill him, he gave the evidence to Isabella. He gave her the ledger proving my father stole millions from the syndicate.”

“Isabella had the ledger,” Luca whispered, realization washing over him.

“Yes,” Vanessa nodded frantically. “She came to my father’s office two days before the accident. She confronted him. She told him that if he didn't return the money and confess to you, she would hand the ledger over to the police and destroy him.”

Vincent groaned, rubbing his face with his trembling hands.

“But she was pregnant, Luca,” Vanessa continued, tears spilling down her cheeks. “And she went into early labor that night. She panicked. She didn't want to go to a public hospital because she knew my father’s men were watching her. She thought my father’s private clinic would be safe if she used a fake name.”

“But Vincent found her,” Luca concluded, his voice dead of emotion.

“He owned the clinic,” Vanessa nodded. “He cornered her right after she delivered the boy. He told her that if she gave you the ledger, he would have his men murder Lily while you were away on business.”

I let out a soft sob from the doorway. Isabella hadn't abandoned her family. She had sacrificed her entire life, her identity, and her newborn son to keep Lily safe.

“Where did he hide her?” Luca asked, his dark eyes burning holes into Vanessa.

Vanessa hesitated, looking at her father. Vincent shook his head frantically, a silent plea for her to stay quiet.

Luca aimed the gun squarely at Vincent’s kneecap.

“I’m going to shoot him in the leg, Vanessa,” Luca stated calmly. “Then the other leg. Then I’m going to leave him in this cellar to bleed to death while you watch. Where. Is. My. Wife.”

“A safehouse in Vermont!” Vanessa shrieked, covering her ears. “A cabin in the Green Mountains! My father has kept her under guard there for three years! She’s not allowed to leave! She doesn't have a phone!”

Luca lowered the gun.

He looked at Vincent with a cold, absolute finality.

“Marco,” Luca said without turning around.

“Yes, boss.”

“Keep them here. Lock the door. If I don't return by tomorrow night with my wife and son, execute them both.”

“Understood, boss,” Marco replied grimly.

Luca turned and walked out of the wine cellar. He grabbed my arm as he passed, pulling me down the long, dark corridor toward the stairs.

“Hannah, pack a bag,” Luca ordered, his pace frantic. “You’re coming with me.”

“Me?” I asked, struggling to keep up with his massive strides. “Mr. Moretti, this is a tactical operation. I’m a maid. You need your security team.”

Luca stopped at the base of the stairs. He turned and looked at me, his eyes filled with a desperate, raw vulnerability I had never seen before.

“Isabella has been locked in a cabin for three years, believing I’m married to the woman who helped destroy her life,” Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. “She’s terrified. She just kidnapped our son from an orphanage. If my heavily armed men kick down her door in the middle of the night, she’ll panic. She might do something reckless to protect the boy.”

He reached out and gently gripped my shoulders.

“She trusts you, Hannah,” Luca pleaded. “You were her friend. If she sees your face first, she’ll know she’s safe. I need you to help me bring my family home.”

I looked into his desperate eyes. I thought of Isabella, the woman who had taught me how to braid Lily’s hair and sang silly lullabies about strawberries and crooked pigtails.

I didn't hesitate.

“I’ll pack my bag,” I said.
