Chapter 8 - The Commission's Justice

Instantly, a sharp burst of static hissed through the hidden surround-sound speakers built into the ceiling of Carlo Bellini’s study.
The armed guards exchanged nervous glances, gripping their rifles tighter. Carlo’s smug smile faltered, his eyes darting toward the corners of the room.
Then, a voice boomed from the speakers. It was tinny, recorded on cheap magnetic tape, but undeniably clear.
"The explosives are in the container, Mr. Bellini." It was my father’s voice, younger, trembling with fear.
"Good," a second voice replied. Carlo’s voice. Cold, arrogant, distinct. "When Matteo’s car passes the loading dock, detonate it. I don't care if his pregnant wife is in the passenger seat. I want the Moretti line eradicated tonight."
The recording clicked off, plunging the study into a heavy, suffocating silence.
Carlo’s face turned an ugly shade of plum. "Shut that off! Find the override!" he screamed at Daniel.
"It's too late, Carlo," Luca said, his voice cutting through the panic like a blade. He stood perfectly relaxed, his hands casually resting in his pockets. "That audio just broadcast to every room in your estate. And more importantly, it just played on a secure conference line to the heads of the Russian, Irish, and Cartel syndicates."
Carlo froze.
"You broke the Commission's absolute law," Luca continued, his tone dripping with lethal satisfaction. "You targeted a pregnant woman. You tried to murder a child. You aren't a boss anymore, Carlo. You're a dead man walking. The other families are already drawing up the borders to divide your territory."
"You arrogant son of a bitch," Carlo snarled, spit flying from his lips. He drew a heavy silver revolver from his desk drawer and pointed it directly at Leo’s chest. "I’ll kill the boy right now! I’ll kill you both!"
"No!"
The scream didn't come from Luca. It came from the doorway.
Vanessa burst into the study. She was completely drenched, shaking violently, but she placed herself directly between her father’s gun and the little boy tied to the chair.
"Get out of the way, Vanessa!" Carlo roared, his finger tightening on the trigger.
"You lied to me!" Vanessa screamed back, tears streaming down her face. "You told me you just wanted to banish them! You promised you wouldn't hurt the kid!"
"He’s a Moretti!" Carlo bellowed. "He’s a threat! Move!"
"I won't let you do it," Vanessa sobbed, spreading her arms wide, shielding Leo with her own body. For the first time in her life, the spoiled, manipulative mafia princess was doing something entirely selfless. She was choosing a child's life over her family’s power.
Carlo’s face twisted in pure, unadulterated rage. He didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger.
The gunshot was deafening.
Vanessa screamed, spinning violently to the side as the bullet tore through her upper shoulder, blossoming into a terrifying red stain against her silk coat. She collapsed to the floor, clutching her collarbone.
In the fraction of a second that Carlo's gun recoiled, the heavy oak paneling of the fireplace bookshelf exploded outward.
A strike team of Moretti loyalists, who had silently infiltrated the estate through the dumbwaiter shaft I had identified, poured into the room.
Before Daniel or the Bellini guards could even raise their weapons, a barrage of suppressed gunfire dropped them to the floor. Daniel fell first, a perfectly placed shot ending his betrayal permanently.
Carlo stood frozen, his revolver hanging uselessly in his hand, surrounded by heavily armed men pointing laser sights at his chest.
Luca didn't flinch during the chaos. He walked calmly across the room, stepping over the groaning bodies of the Bellini guards. He walked right up to Carlo.
Carlo raised his gun, but his hand was shaking so badly he couldn't aim.
Luca reached out, incredibly fast, and snatched the hot revolver from the older man’s hand. He didn't shoot him. He simply delivered a brutal, shattering blow to Carlo’s knee with the heavy steel barrel of the gun.
Carlo screamed, collapsing onto the Persian rug in a pathetic heap.
"Bind him," Luca ordered his men, his voice devoid of emotion. "Keep him alive. The Commission will want to handle his execution personally."
Luca immediately dropped to his knees beside the heavy wooden chair. He pulled a pocket knife and slashed the thick zip-ties binding Leo’s wrists and ankles.
The little boy gasped, tears streaming down his dirt-streaked face.
Luca dropped the knife and pulled his nephew into a fierce, desperate embrace, burying his face in the boy's dark curls.
"I got you," Luca whispered fiercely, his broad shoulders shaking. "I got you, Leo. You’re safe."
Leo wrapped his small arms tightly around Luca’s neck. "Hannah said you would come," the boy sniffled. "She said you protect people."
Luca closed his eyes, a profound wave of emotion washing over his face at the mention of my name.
A medic from the strike team rushed in, immediately tending to Vanessa, who was leaning against the desk, pale and bleeding, but alive.
Luca stood up, carrying Leo in his arms. He looked down at his former fiancée.
Vanessa looked up at him, her eyes filled with pain and a strange, quiet relief. "I’m sorry, Luca," she whispered.
"You took a bullet for my blood," Luca said softly. "Your debts to the Moretti family are cleared, Vanessa. When you heal, leave Chicago. Never come back."
Vanessa nodded, closing her eyes as the medic packed her wound.
Luca turned and walked out of the study, carrying the true heir of the Moretti empire through the grand halls of the fallen Bellini estate. As he walked out the front doors, the heavy fog was beginning to lift, revealing the first pale streaks of dawn creeping over the horizon.
The war was over.
May you like
But as Luca walked toward the waiting armored SUV, he looked down at the little boy in his arms, and then up at the breaking daylight.
"We're going home, Leo," Luca said. "But there’s one promise left I have to keep."
