Chapter 7 - The Devil's Bargain

The rain pounded against the brick walls of the alleyway, but the only sound I heard was the roaring in my ears.
He took Leo.
Luca stood perfectly still, his gun still trained on the weeping woman who was supposed to become his wife in three weeks.
"Lie to me again, Vanessa," Luca growled, his voice a lethal, vibrating threat. "Give me a reason to pull this trigger."
"I’m not lying!" Vanessa shrieked, pressing her hands to her soaked hair. "Daniel double-crossed me! He’s been reporting directly to my father this whole time. When your men escaped the tailor shop, Daniel traced Elias’s burner phone signal to your warehouse by the river."
My heart plummeted into my stomach. Elias. We had left the old man and the little boy locked inside.
"I wanted the boy, Luca," Vanessa confessed, her voice cracking. "I admit it. I wanted to find Elias, take the kid, and send them away so my father could never find them. I wanted to marry you so I could finally have enough power to break away from my psychotic family. But my father... Carlo doesn't want leverage. He wants the Moretti bloodline extinct. He sent a strike team to your warehouse ten minutes ago. They breached the doors. They have the boy."
Luca lowered his gun a fraction. The betrayal was complete, but he was a man who calculated probabilities in seconds. Vanessa was unarmed, soaking wet, and terrified of her own blood.
"Where did they take him?" Luca demanded.
"The Bellini estate in Lake Forest," Vanessa gasped, wiping the rain and mascara from her face. "My father is holding him in the main study. He told me to come here, to wait for you to show up for the housekeeper's father, and to kill you. If I didn't, he said he’d shoot Leo."
Luca stared at her. He didn't offer her comfort, but he lowered his weapon.
"Hannah," Luca said, not taking his eyes off Vanessa. "Take your father. Take my SUV. Drive to the safe house in the North Suburbs. The address is in the GPS under 'Haven'. There are loyal men there. You will be safe."
I gripped the handles of my father’s wheelchair. My hands were shaking. I looked at the man who had just saved my father’s life, a man who was about to walk into a fortified compound to rescue a seven-year-old boy against impossible odds.
"What are you going to do?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
"I’m going to get the cassette tape," Luca said, his jaw locked in a rigid line of absolute determination. "And then I’m going to call the Commission. Carlo just violated the oldest law we have. You don't touch children."
Luca tossed me the keys to the SUV. He didn't look back. He grabbed Vanessa by the arm, hauling her to her feet, and marched her toward her black Mercedes.
Forty-five minutes later, I was sitting in the heavily fortified command center of the 'Haven' safe house. My father was resting in a medical bed in the next room, being tended to by a private doctor on the Moretti payroll.
I wasn't resting.
I stood behind Luca’s second-in-command, a grizzled man named Tony, watching a bank of security monitors.
Luca had retrieved the tape from the bus terminal. Now, he was coordinating an assault on the Bellini estate. But a frontal assault would result in a bloodbath, and Leo would almost certainly be killed in the crossfire.
"Tony," Luca’s voice crackled through the encrypted radio on the desk. "I’m a mile out from the compound. Is the uplink ready?"
"Ready, Boss," Tony replied. "We hacked the Bellini estate’s PA system using the backdoor frequencies. Whenever you give the signal, that cassette tape will play out of every speaker in their house, and directly into the encrypted conference call with the Commission heads."
"Good."
I stared at the blueprint of the Bellini estate pulled up on the monitor. Something about the layout nagged at my brain. The sweeping staircases, the location of the kitchen, the blind spots near the pantry.
"Wait," I said aloud, stepping closer to the screen.
Tony looked at me, annoyed by the interruption of a civilian. "What is it, kid?"
"The Bellini estate was built by the same architect who designed the Moretti mansion," I said, my heart starting to race. "Look at the service entrances. They're identical."
Tony frowned, looking at the blueprint.
"I’ve worked in the Moretti house for a year," I said, grabbing a red marker from the desk and circling a small, unmarked square on the blueprint. "The kitchen pantry has a dumbwaiter shaft. It’s huge. It was built in the 1920s to move ice blocks to the basement. It connects directly to the sub-cellar, completely bypassing the ground-floor security checkpoints."
Tony’s eyes widened. He grabbed the radio. "Boss. The girl just found you a backdoor."
Ten miles away, the rain had stopped, leaving a heavy, suffocating fog rolling off Lake Michigan.
Luca Moretti walked alone up the sweeping gravel driveway of the Bellini estate. He held no weapons in his hands. In his right hand, he held a small, black cassette tape.
A dozen laser sights painted red dots across his chest as he approached the front doors, but nobody fired. Carlo Bellini wanted to gloat.
The heavy oak doors opened. Daniel stood there, a smug, traitorous smile on his face. He patted Luca down, removing his handgun and a backup knife.
"He's clean," Daniel announced, shoving Luca into the grand foyer.
Luca walked into the main study. It was a mirror image of his own.
Sitting behind the desk was Carlo Bellini, a bloated, arrogant man with cold, reptilian eyes.
And tied to a heavy wooden chair in the center of the room, shivering in his damp clothes, was little Leo.
"Luca," Carlo smiled, spreading his hands. "You brought me a cassette tape. How retro."
Luca didn't look at the armed guards circling the room. He looked only at Leo, offering the terrified boy a slow, reassuring blink.
"I brought you a choice, Carlo," Luca said, his voice echoing in the large room.
Carlo laughed. "A choice? You have nothing. Sign the Moretti docks over to me, transfer your offshore accounts, and I’ll let you and the bastard child walk out of here. Refuse, and I put a bullet in his head, then yours."
"I’m not giving you my ports," Luca said smoothly, holding up the tape. "I’m giving you a chance to shoot yourself before the Commission hears what's on this tape."
Carlo sneered. "The Commission? You think they care about an eleven-year-old recording?"
May you like
Luca smiled. It was a terrifying, absolute smile.
"Tony," Luca said aloud to the hidden microphone in his lapel. "Play it."
