Chapter 8 - THE LEDGER'S SECRET

The metallic click of the revolver’s hammer cocking against my skull echoed loudly in the concrete garage. A dirty cop. The realization hit me like a physical blow. Vanessa hadn't just paid off a few low-level thugs; she had orchestrated a conspiracy that reached the very top of the Chicago Police Department. “Let her go, Harris,” Luca growled, taking a slow step toward me, his emerald eyes burning with lethal intent. “Stay right there, Moretti,” Detective Harris warned, pressing the cold barrel harder into my hair. “You take one more step, and the maid’s brains are painting your vintage wine collection. Kick the knife away.” Luca hesitated. He looked at me, his jaw clenched so tight I thought his teeth might shatter. Then he looked at Caroline, who was trembling violently, clutching Leo to her chest. Slowly, Luca opened his hand. The heavy silver knife clattered to the concrete floor. He kicked it away. Vanessa laughed, a high, triumphant sound. She walked over and picked up the knife, admiring the blade before turning her attention to Caroline. “Look at you,” Vanessa sneered, circling the frail woman in the hospital gown. “Six years, and you still look pathetic. You never deserved him. You never deserved this empire.” Caroline shrank back, her amnesia leaving her utterly defenseless against a woman who hated her for reasons she couldn't even remember. “Please,” Caroline whimpered. “Just let my son go. I don't care what you do to me.” “Oh, the boy isn't going anywhere,” Vanessa smiled wickedly. “He’s the sole heir to the Moretti fortune. Once Luca is safely locked away in a federal penitentiary for your ‘murder’, I’ll be appointed the boy’s legal guardian. The money, the estate, the power—it all stays with me.” Vanessa pulled the small leather ledger from her clutch purse and waved it in the air. “Every illegal transaction Luca has ever made is in this book, Harris,” Vanessa said to the corrupt detective. “You make sure this ends up in the district attorney’s hands. It’s an airtight case. Luca goes away for life. I get the empire. You get your ten million dollar cut.” “Sounds like a deal,” Harris smirked. He grabbed my arm roughly, shoving me forward. “Get against the wall with the rest of them, sweetheart.” I stumbled forward, catching my balance near the front bumper of the armored SUV. I stood beside Luca, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm in my chest. The heavy metal door of the garage opened again, and Marco walked in, limping slightly, his submachine gun slung over his shoulder. He looked at Luca and grinned. “Checkmate, Boss,” Marco spat. Vanessa opened the leather ledger, her eyes scanning the handwritten pages with greedy satisfaction. “It’s truly a masterpiece, Luca. Your father’s handwriting. The dates, the amounts, the offshore accounts. The FBI is going to have a field day with this.” As Vanessa flipped the pages, something caught her eye. She frowned, stopping on a page near the middle of the book. “Wait,” Vanessa muttered, squinting at the page. “What is this?” Marco stepped closer. “What’s wrong?” “This page... the handwriting is different,” Vanessa said, her voice dropping in confusion. She traced a finger over the ink. “It’s not financial records. It’s a list of names. Dates. And... bank routing numbers?” My heart stopped. I looked at Luca. His face remained entirely impassive, a mask of cold stone. “What is it?” Harris demanded, keeping his gun trained on us. Vanessa read the page aloud, her voice trembling slightly. “August 12th. Two hundred thousand dollars wired to Detective Robert Harris. December 4th. Fifty thousand dollars wired to Judge William Thorne.” Harris went completely pale. “What? Let me see that.” Vanessa flipped to the next page. “Marco Moretti. Three million dollars hidden in a Cayman Islands account. Vanessa Bellini... a signed contract promising fifty percent of the Moretti assets upon the successful framing of Luca Moretti.” Vanessa looked up, her eyes wide with sheer panic. “This isn't Luca’s ledger.” Luca finally smiled. A slow, chilling, victorious smile. “No, Vanessa,” Luca said softly. “It’s not.” “Then what is it?!” she screamed, throwing the book onto the floor. “It’s the ledger Caroline was threatening to give the FBI six years ago,” Luca revealed, his voice echoing in the garage. “The ledger detailing the corruption inside my own ranks. The ledger you tried to kill her for.” Vanessa stumbled backward, shaking her head. “No. No, that’s impossible. You didn't know about that ledger! Marco destroyed it before the boat blew up!” “He thought he destroyed it,” Caroline suddenly spoke up. Everyone turned to look at the fragile, amnesiac woman. Caroline stepped forward, letting go of Leo’s hand. Her blue eyes, which had been cloudy with terror and confusion all night, suddenly burned with a sharp, undeniable clarity. “I hid the original in the lining of a baby blanket,” Caroline said, her voice strong and steady. “The same blue blanket Emily found in the guest room yesterday. The blanket you kept to taunt me when my memory came back.” Vanessa gasped. “You remember?” Luca whispered, looking at his wife in awe. Caroline looked at Luca, tears filling her eyes. “I remember everything, Luca. I remember the explosion. I remember Marco pulling me from the water. I remember the clinic. But most importantly... I remember exactly where the FBI needs to look to put all three of you away forever.” “Shut her up!” Vanessa screamed at Harris. “Shoot her!” Harris raised his revolver, aiming directly at Caroline’s chest. But before he could pull the trigger, the massive, reinforced steel doors of the underground garage exploded inward with a deafening screech of tearing metal. An armored SWAT vehicle smashed through the doors, sending concrete shrapnel flying in every direction. The bright headlights blinded everyone in the room. “FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! GET ON THE GROUND!” a booming voice echoed from a megaphone. A dozen heavily armed federal agents swarmed out of the vehicle, their laser sights painting red dots across Harris, Marco, and Vanessa. Harris panicked. He spun around, aiming his revolver toward the agents. Bang. Bang. Two precise shots echoed through the garage. Harris dropped his gun, clutching his shattered shoulder as he fell to the concrete. Marco didn't even try to fight. He dropped his submachine gun and fell to his knees, raising his hands in surrender as laser sights dotted his chest. Vanessa stood frozen in the chaos, the flashing red and blue lights reflecting off the tears streaming down her ruined face. The empire she had spent six years stealing was disintegrating before her very eyes. She looked at the silver knife Luca had kicked away earlier. It was resting just inches from her foot. With a scream of pure, unadulterated rage, Vanessa snatched the knife from the floor and lunged forward. Not at Luca. Not at Caroline. She lunged directly at me. “You ruined everything!” Vanessa shrieked, driving the blade toward my chest.
