Chapter 4 - THE TRAITOR IN THE SHADOWS

The silence in the grand foyer shattered into sheer chaos. “No!” I screamed, acting entirely on instinct. I threw my body forward, wrapping my arms tightly around little Leo and shielding him with my own back. I squeezed my eyes shut, bracing for the deafening crack of a gunshot. “Emily, get down!” Luca roared. But the gunshot didn't come. Instead, there was a sickening thud, followed by the clatter of heavy metal hitting the marble floor. I opened my eyes and cautiously looked over my shoulder. Arthur, the frail elderly groundskeeper from the orphanage, had swung his heavy wooden cane like a baseball bat. The solid oak struck Marco squarely across the wrist, shattering the bones. Marco’s gun had dropped to the floor, sliding across the polished marble. Before Marco could recover, Luca was on him. The mafia boss moved with terrifying, lethal speed. He tackled Marco to the ground, his massive fist colliding with his former head of security’s jaw with a sickening crunch. Marco went limp instantly, his eyes rolling back in his head. Luca stood up, his chest heaving, his knuckles bruised. He kicked the handgun far out of reach. Vanessa, still gagged with the handkerchief, was thrashing wildly in the corner, her eyes wide with absolute panic. Her co-conspirator had just fallen. “Emily, are you hurt?” Luca demanded, rushing to my side. “No,” I breathed, my heart hammering against my ribs. I looked down at Leo. The little boy was clinging to my apron, his emerald eyes wide, but he wasn't crying. He was incredibly brave. “We’re okay. He’s okay.” Luca reached out and touched Leo’s cheek gently. “You are safe now, Leo. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.” He turned to Arthur, the elderly man leaning heavily on his cane, breathing hard. “You saved my son’s life,” Luca said, his voice thick with profound gratitude. “You saved my family. I will never forget this.” “Just doing what’s right, sir,” Arthur rasped, offering a weak smile. Luca turned his attention back to the unconscious Marco. Two of the other security guards—men who were completely stunned by their captain’s betrayal—stepped forward. “Bind him,” Luca ordered coldly. “And tie Vanessa to the chair in the drawing room. I want answers, and I want them now.” Ten minutes later, the grand mansion felt like a war zone. Leo was sitting on one of the plush velvet sofas in the living room, bundled in a thick cashmere blanket. I brought him a massive mug of hot chocolate, piled high with marshmallows, just as I had promised. He drank it greedily, offering me a shy, chocolate-stained smile. Natalie sat beside him, weeping softly as she stroked the boy’s dark hair. “He looks just like her,” she whispered. “He has Caroline’s nose.” In the adjacent drawing room, things were not so gentle. Vanessa was tied to a heavy antique chair, the gag finally removed from her mouth. Marco was handcuffed to a radiator nearby, a bloody gash across his chin, slowly regaining consciousness. Luca paced in front of them like a caged tiger. I stood by the doorway, keeping an eye on Leo, but unable to pull myself away from the truth unspooling before us. “Six years,” Luca said, his voice dangerously soft. “For six years, I grieved my wife. I built a monument to her memory. And you, Marco—the man who stood beside me at her funeral—were the one who rigged her boat to explode.” Marco spit a mouthful of blood onto the Persian rug. “It wasn't personal, Boss. It was strictly business.” “Business?” Luca shouted, grabbing Marco by the collar of his shirt. “She was my wife!” “She was a liability!” Marco fired back, his eyes full of defiance. “She wanted you out of the life, Luca! She was threatening to go to the FBI with the family ledgers if you didn't walk away from the syndicate! Vanessa came to me. She had the ambition Caroline lacked. We made a deal.” Luca slowly turned toward Vanessa. The beautiful woman in the red dress was sobbing, her makeup smeared across her face. “I loved you, Luca!” Vanessa cried. “I did it because I loved you! She was going to ruin everything you built!” “You don't know the meaning of the word love,” Luca spat in disgust. “If you rigged the boat, how did she survive? And where has she been for six years?” Vanessa laughed, a bitter, hysterical sound. “She was tougher than we thought. The explosion threw her clear of the wreckage. Marco found her washed up on the shore two miles downriver. She had severe head trauma. She didn't even know her own name.” Natalie gasped from the other room. “You kept my sister captive while she had amnesia?” “It was the perfect solution,” Vanessa sneered. “We couldn't risk killing her directly once the police started dredging the river. So Marco put her in a private psychiatric facility owned by a doctor on my payroll. When we found out she was pregnant a few months later... well, that was just a bonus.” Luca’s hands balled into fists. “A bonus?” “Leverage, Luca,” Marco chimed in with a cruel smile. “As long as we had the kid, we knew we could control Caroline if her memory ever returned. But the bitch managed to smuggle the boy out this week. She bribed a nurse with a piece of jewelry.” “The pocket watch,” I whispered, realizing how Leo had gotten it. “Where is she, Vanessa?” Luca demanded, leaning down until his face was inches from hers. “Where is the facility?” Vanessa glared at him, a spark of pure malice in her eyes. “It doesn't matter. You’re too late.” Luca grabbed the arms of her chair. “What do you mean?” “I told you earlier,” Vanessa smiled wickedly. “If I didn't check in by midnight, the doctor had orders to move her. But since Marco got compromised tonight, I activated the contingency plan.” My heart dropped. “Contingency plan?” Luca asked, his voice trembling. Vanessa looked directly at me, her eyes filled with venom. “Emily, remember that old, abandoned greenhouse at the edge of the estate? The one you were told never to clean?” My breath caught in my throat. The greenhouse. It sat on a desolate corner of the sprawling property, surrounded by dead vines and heavy iron gates. Vanessa had explicitly banned all staff from going near it, claiming it was structurally unsafe. “She’s not in a facility, Luca,” Vanessa whispered. “She’s been on the estate this entire time. Right under your nose. And ten minutes ago, while you were playing hero with the kid, I triggered the remote lock on my phone.” Vanessa threw her head back and laughed. “The greenhouse is rigged with a gas leak, Luca. She’s locked inside. By the time you get there, your precious Caroline will finally be dead.”
