Chapter 7 - THE SILVER POCKET WATCH

The rain had finally stopped, leaving a heavy, misted silence over the estate. Luca stared at the tarnished silver pocket watch resting in Mia’s pale hand. He didn't touch it immediately. He recognized the engraved crest on the silver casing. It was the Moretti family crest. A shield flanked by two wolves. “Where did you find this, Mia?” Luca asked, his voice barely above a whisper. “I found it in the pocket of Vanessa’s velvet coat when I was locked in the trunk,” Mia explained, handing the watch to him. “She must have taken it from Frank after she hit him.” Rosa let out a soft gasp. “That’s Frank’s watch,” she said, stepping forward. “Your father gave it to him twenty years ago, Mr. Luca. Frank never took it off.” Luca turned the heavy silver timepiece over in his hands. He pressed the small latch on the side. The casing popped open. The glass face of the watch was cracked, frozen at exactly 11:40 PM. The time of the attack. But it wasn't the time that made Luca’s breath hitch. It was what was tucked inside the casing, behind the clock face. A small, tightly folded piece of paper. Luca carefully extracted the paper with his large fingers. He unfolded it under the glow of the porch lights. It was a handwritten note. The handwriting was shaky, rushed, scrawled in black ink. Frank’s handwriting. “Luca,” the note read. “If you are reading this, I am gone. I didn't want to break your heart, but you must know the truth before you marry her. Vanessa didn't just spy on your trucks. She is the one who poisoned your father five years ago.” A collective gasp rippled through the few people left on the steps. My hands flew to my mouth. Luca’s father hadn't died of a sudden heart attack. He had been murdered. “I found the vial of digitalis in Vanessa’s suite,” the letter continued. “She was trying to accelerate the merger by removing your father. I confronted her tonight in the garage. I told her I was going to you. She laughed. She said her father Marcus supplied the poison. I love you like a son, Luca. Protect the family.” Luca stared at the paper. His hands began to shake. Not with fear, but with a rage so profound it seemed to vibrate in the air around him. For five years, he had blamed himself for not being there when his father suffered his fatal “heart attack.” For five years, he had welcomed his father’s murderer into his home, placed a diamond ring on her finger, and let her mistreat his staff. Luca looked up. His eyes locked onto Marcus Bellini, who was currently being pushed into the back of an FBI transport van. “Reynolds!” Luca roared, his voice terrifying in the quiet night. Agent Reynolds turned. Luca marched down the marble steps, holding the note in the air. He shoved past the federal agents and slammed his hand against the door of the transport van, preventing them from closing it on Marcus. Marcus flinched, terrified by the pure, unadulterated murder in Luca’s eyes. “You poisoned my father,” Luca snarled, his voice a low, guttural threat. Marcus pressed himself against the cage of the van, shaking his head. “It was her idea! Vanessa’s idea! I just got her the digitalis!” “You’re a dead man, Marcus,” Luca whispered. “Prison won't save you. When the inmates find out you ordered the murder of Don Moretti, you won't last a week.” Luca stepped back, letting Reynolds take the note. “Add premeditated murder to the charges, Agent,” Luca said coldly. Reynolds read the note and nodded. “With pleasure.” The doors of the van slammed shut. As the convoy of police vehicles finally drove away, taking the Bellini nightmare with them, the quiet of the estate settled in. The engagement party was over. The betrayal was exposed. Luca walked slowly back up the stairs. He looked exhausted, carrying the weight of a shattered reality on his broad shoulders. He stopped in front of Rosa. He gently took her hands in his. “Frank died a hero, Rosa,” Luca said softly, his voice cracking. “He died protecting me. Protecting this family. I am so deeply, deeply sorry I didn't listen to him sooner.” Rosa wept, resting her forehead against Luca’s chest. Luca held the grieving widow, offering the comfort he had denied her all evening. Then, he looked at me. “And you, Claire,” Luca said, his eyes filled with immense gratitude. “You risked everything to speak up tonight. You saved Mia. You saved Lily. You saved me.” I smiled through my tears. “I just wanted my brother to be safe, Luca.” Mia stepped forward and put her hand on my shoulder. “Speaking of your brother,” Mia said gently. “Tommy woke up from his coma this morning. The doctors say he’s going to make a full recovery.” I let out a sob of pure relief, covering my face with my hands. Tommy was going to be okay. Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out his heavy gold money clip. He didn't hand me cash. He handed me a sleek, black metal card. “That is a limitless account,” Luca said, pressing it into my palm. “Your brother’s medical bills are paid in full. The mortgage is paid in full. And you are never scrubbing another floor in this house again.” I looked at the card, stunned. “Luca, I can't take this.” “You can, and you will,” he insisted gently. “Because starting tomorrow, you aren't a housekeeper. You are the new estate manager. If anyone ever disrespects you or your staff again, they answer directly to me.” I looked around the portico. At Rosa, holding Frank’s pocket watch. At Mia, wrapping a warm blanket around little Lily. And at Luca, a man who had just torn down his own empire to do the right thing. The nightmare was over. But as we turned to walk back inside the warm, brightly lit mansion, a small voice broke the silence. “Excuse me, Mr. Boss Man,” Lily said, tugging on Luca’s trousers. Luca stopped and knelt down to the child’s eye level. “What is it, Lily?” Lily reached into the pocket of the oversized velvet coat. “The medicine lady said I was supposed to give you this too,” Lily said innocently. She pulled out a small, glittering object and placed it in Luca’s massive palm. It was a diamond necklace. But not just any necklace. It was the legendary Moretti diamond, a family heirloom that had been reported stolen ten years ago.
