Chapter 6 - THE BRASS KEY

Luca lifted the lid of the heavy metal lockbox. The rain fell inside, washing away years of dust. Inside sat a thick, leather-bound ledger book, its pages yellowed with age. Beside it was a stack of USB drives and a velvet pouch. Luca pulled the ledger out and flipped it open. Even in the dim light of the portico, the meticulous columns of ink were devastatingly clear. It wasn't just a record of Marcus Bellini’s gambling debts. It was a master list. Bribed judges, paid-off politicians, blackmailed union leaders, and the exact coordinates of every illegal shipment the Bellini family had moved through Chicago for the last twenty years. “You kept a physical record of your own treason,” Luca said, his voice laced with disgust. “Why?” Marcus stared at the mud beneath his expensive Italian shoes. “Insurance,” the older boss muttered, defeated. “In this life, you need leverage against your own captains. If they ever turned on me, I had the proof to drag them down with me.” “And instead, you handed me the rope to hang your entire empire,” Luca said. He closed the ledger and handed it to one of his loyal guards. “Lock this in my safe. Call the FBI task force. Tell Agent Reynolds I have a gift for him.” Vanessa, who had been sitting quietly on the wet steps after Daniel’s betrayal, suddenly let out a bitter, hysterical laugh. She stood up, her ruined designer dress clinging to her body. “You think you’ve won, Luca?” Vanessa sneered, wiping a mixture of rain and running mascara from her eyes. “You send my father to prison. You send me to prison. But what about your precious brother?” She pointed a shaking finger at Matteo, who was standing frozen near the doorway. “Matteo helped me clean up Frank’s blood!” Vanessa shouted to the crowd. “Matteo drove the decoy car! If I go down for murder, your own blood goes down as an accessory!” Luca turned slowly to look at his younger brother. Matteo looked terrified. He took a step backward, raising his hands pleadingly. “Luca, she threatened me. She said her father would kill me if I didn't help.” Luca’s expression was unreadable. He walked toward Matteo. The silence was heavy. The mafia boss evaluating his own blood. “Frank taught you how to ride a bike, Matteo,” Luca said softly. Matteo squeezed his eyes shut. “I know.” “Frank sat by your bed when you had pneumonia because our father was too busy running the streets.” “I know, Luca! I’m sorry!” Matteo sobbed, his bravado completely shattered. Luca stopped inches from his brother. “You let a woman manipulate you into covering up the murder of a man who loved you. You are a coward, Matteo.” Luca turned to his guards. “Take Matteo to the basement holding room. When the FBI arrives, hand him over with the rest of them. He will answer for his crimes like anyone else.” The guests gasped. A mafia boss handing over his own brother to the feds was unheard of. It broke every rule of the Omertà. But Luca wasn't a traditional boss. He looked at Rosa. “I promised you justice, Rosa. No exceptions.” Rosa nodded, fresh tears falling down her cheeks, but she stood a little taller. Vanessa watched Matteo being dragged away, her last piece of leverage gone. She looked at Lily, who was hiding behind my legs. “Lily, come to Mommy,” Vanessa said, trying to sound sweet. Lily shook her head, gripping my hand tightly. “No,” the little girl whispered. “You put the medicine lady in the dark box. You’re bad.” Vanessa’s face twisted in pure, ugly rage. “I am your mother!” she screamed, lunging forward. She didn't reach the child. Rosa stepped directly into Vanessa’s path. The sixty-three-year-old widow, wearing her husband’s black funeral dress, raised her right hand and delivered a stinging, open-handed slap across Vanessa Bellini’s face. The crack echoed over the rain. Vanessa stumbled backward, holding her cheek in shock. “You are a monster,” Rosa said, her voice shaking with righteous fury. “And you will never touch another child again.” Before Vanessa could retaliate, the wail of police sirens pierced the night air. Not just one siren. Dozens of them. Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the iron gates of the Moretti estate as a convoy of FBI tactical vehicles and Chicago police cruisers swarmed the driveway. The authorities poured out, weapons drawn, securing the perimeter. Agent Reynolds, a seasoned fed who had spent a decade trying to build a case against the Bellinis, walked up the steps. Luca didn't resist. He simply handed the lockbox and the ledger to the agent. “Everything you need is in there, Reynolds,” Luca said calmly. “The murder weapon is in the garage. The confession is on tape from my security cameras.” Reynolds looked at the ledger, then at Marcus and Vanessa in handcuffs. He nodded to Luca. “You’re a complicated man, Moretti,” Reynolds said. “Just a man taking out the trash,” Luca replied. As the police dragged Vanessa away, she looked back at Luca, screaming curses into the night. But Luca wasn't looking at her. He was looking at Mia, who was shivering in the cold. “You saved my family’s soul tonight, Mia,” Luca said gently. “How can I ever repay you?” Mia looked at me, then back at Luca. She reached into her wet scrubs and pulled out a tarnished silver pocket watch. “You can start by looking at this,” Mia said.
