Chapter 8 - Fire and Blood

The warehouse erupted into chaos.

Alessandro tackled me to the ground just as a hail of bullets shredded the wooden crates behind us. Wood splinters rained down like shrapnel.

Marco didn’t dive for cover. He stood his ground, firing his weapon with deadly precision. Two of Vivian’s men dropped instantly.

“Flank them!” a voice yelled over the deafening gunfire.

Alessandro dragged me behind a rusting forklift. “Sarah, stay down!”

He leaned around the heavy steel and fired three rapid shots. Another man fell. But there were still too many.

“Alessandro!” Vivian shrieked from her chair, miraculously untouched by the crossfire. “You’re dead! My family will hunt you down to the ends of the earth!”

I gripped the cold steel of the small revolver Alessandro had given me. I remembered Thomas’s warm smile, his gentle hands, the way he held Emma. These people took him from us for greed and power.

A shadow moved to our left. One of Vivian’s men was creeping around the forklift, his weapon raised, aiming directly at Alessandro’s blind side.

I didn’t think. I stood up, raised the heavy revolver with both hands, and pulled the trigger.

The recoil bruised my palm, and the blast was deafening. The man dropped his weapon and crumpled to the concrete floor, clutching his leg.

Alessandro whipped his head around, staring at me in shock. Then, his eyes filled with a fierce, burning pride.

Suddenly, the warehouse doors slammed open again. The booming sound of heavy boots hitting the concrete echoed through the cavernous space.

It wasn’t more of Vivian’s men. It was the Moretti family enforcers. Dozens of them.

The remaining gunmen dropped their weapons instantly, surrendering.

Marco walked over to Vivian and cut her bindings. She scrambled to her feet, trying to run, but two massive Moretti enforcers grabbed her by the arms.

Alessandro stood up, brushing the dirt from his clothes. He walked slowly toward Vivian, the gold signet ring gleaming in the dim light.

“Take her to the Commission,” Alessandro ordered his men. “Deliver her with the ledger. Let the remaining families see what the Romanos and Ricci have done.”

Vivian screamed obscenities as she was dragged out into the rain.

The warehouse fell eerily silent. Alessandro turned to Marco.

“You protected my brother,” Alessandro said, his voice thick with emotion. “You protected his wife and child. You have my loyalty, Marco. Forever.”

Marco bowed his head respectfully. “He was a good man, Boss. He loved them more than life itself.”

Alessandro walked back to me. His hands were covered in gun grease and dirt, but his touch was incredibly gentle as he wiped a smudge of soot from my cheek.

“It’s over, Sarah,” he whispered. “The families that hurt him are destroyed. You never have to hide again.”

I looked at him, the adrenaline finally fading, leaving me exhausted but undeniably alive. “What happens now?”

Alessandro looked down at the gold signet ring in his hand. “Now, I make a choice.”

He walked over to the edge of the docks, where the dark water of the canal churned beneath the storm. Without hesitation, he threw the heavy gold ring into the water. It sank instantly, swallowed by the depths.
