Chapter 7 - The Dockside Confession

Rain lashed against the windshield as Alessandro tore through the winding mountain roads back toward Milan. The silence in the car was suffocating, broken only by the rhythmic swish of the wipers and Emma’s soft breathing in the back seat.
“Marco was Thomas’s inside man,” Alessandro finally said, gripping the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white. “That’s why Thomas had the Black Crown symbol. Marco was his protector when he was in exile.”
“So Marco isn’t our enemy?” I asked, desperate for a shred of hope.
“I don’t know anymore, Sarah. In this life, loyalties shift with the wind.”
We arrived at the abandoned industrial docks on the outskirts of Milan just before midnight. Rusting shipping containers stacked like jagged teeth against the stormy sky.
“Stay in the car,” Alessandro ordered, checking his magazine. “Keep the doors locked.”
“No,” I said firmly. “Thomas was my husband. This is my fight too.”
Alessandro looked at me, seeing the unyielding determination in my eyes. He nodded once, slipping a small revolver from his ankle holster and pressing it into my hands. “Safety is off. Point and pull.”
We left Emma sleeping in the heavily armored vehicle and crept into the cavernous, echoing warehouse.
In the center of the damp floor, tied to a wooden chair, was Vivian Romano. Her crimson designer gown was ruined, soaked with rain and grime. Her haughty arrogance was gone, replaced by whimpering terror.
Standing behind her, holding a silenced pistol, was Marco. The jagged scar over his left eye looked menacing in the dim light.
“Boss,” Marco said, his voice flat.
“Marco,” Alessandro replied, keeping his weapon aimed at the ground. “Why do you have my ex-fiancée tied to a chair?”
“Because she’s the one who gave Ricci the location of your brother’s car two years ago,” Marco said, pressing the barrel against Vivian’s temple. “She traded Tomaso’s life for a seat at Ricci’s table. And she was planning to kill you next to take over the Moretti empire.”
Vivian sobbed openly. “Alessandro, please! He’s crazy! Don’t let him kill me!”
I stepped out from behind Alessandro. “Did you know who he was, Vivian? Did you know Thomas was his brother?”
Vivian looked at me, spitting venom even in her terror. “Of course I knew. He was a threat. And you’re just a pathetic maid who got lucky.”
Alessandro raised his gun, aiming directly at Vivian’s chest. The air crackled with lethal tension.
“Don’t do it, Boss,” Marco warned softly.
“She betrayed my family, Marco. She got my brother killed.”
“Yes,” Marco said, stepping away from Vivian. “But if you kill her, you become just like them. Tomaso didn’t want you to be a monster. That’s why he gave up his birthright to live a quiet life with Sarah.”
Marco reached into his jacket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He tossed it to Alessandro.
Alessandro caught it and flipped it open. Inside was a heavy gold signet ring. The Don’s ring.
“Ricci is finished,” Marco said. “The ledger you have will destroy the other corrupt families. But you have a choice, Alessandro. You can wear that ring and rule the ashes, or you can walk away.”

Before Alessandro could speak, the warehouse doors blew open. Five heavily armed men poured in. Vivian’s loyalists.
Vivian screamed in triumph. “Kill them! Kill them all!”
