THE GHOST'S RETURN / Chapter 3 / 8

Chapter 4 - THE CONFESSIONAL

The blast shattered the stained-glass windows, showering the pews in a rain of colorful, razor-sharp shards.

Isabella was thrown to the floor, her ears ringing with a high-pitched whine. Smoke filled the sanctuary, thick and choking. She scrambled to her hands and knees, grabbing blindly for Noah in the darkness.

"Noah!" she coughed, her throat burning.

"I'm here!" the boy cried from beneath the front pew, terrified but unhurt.

Vincent was already up, firing his shotgun toward the shattered front doors. The booming blasts illuminated the smoke for a fraction of a second, revealing at least a dozen heavily armed men pouring into the church. They wore tactical gear with no insignia, moving with lethal precision.

"They tracked the SUV!" Vincent yelled, ejecting a spent shell. "We can't hold this room!"

Father Dominic appeared through the smoke, pulling at Isabella's arm. "The crypt! Under the altar! Move!"

Isabella grabbed Noah, hauling him to his feet. She snatched the gold pocket watch off the altar just as a spray of bullets tore through the linen cloth where it had been resting seconds before.

Dominic pushed a heavy stone panel beside the pulpit. It groaned open, revealing a dark, narrow stone staircase plunging beneath the church.

"Go!" Dominic ordered, shoving Noah and Isabella inside.

"Vincent, come on!" Isabella screamed over the gunfire.

Vincent fired one last blast, dropping a man in the center aisle, before diving toward the hidden door. A bullet grazed his shoulder just as he cleared the opening. He cursed loudly, blood instantly staining his tailored coat, but he managed to slam the heavy stone panel shut behind him.

The sound of gunfire was instantly muffled, replaced by the damp, freezing silence of the catacombs beneath St. Jude's.

Dominic produced a heavy iron key from his cassock and locked the stone door from the inside. "It's three feet of solid granite. They won't breach it without explosives."

Vincent leaned against the cold wall, clutching his bleeding shoulder. "Explosives are exactly what they’ll use. Frank Delaney doesn't leave loose ends."

Isabella ignored him, dropping to her knees in the dark. She grabbed a heavy iron candlestick from a nearby tomb and slammed it against a stone pillar until a spark caught the old candle wick. Dim yellow light flooded the crypt.

She looked at Noah. The boy was trembling violently, his eyes wide with shock.

"Are you hurt?" Isabella asked gently, checking his arms and face.

Noah shook his head, though tears were streaming down his cheeks. "They're going to kill us. My mom was right. We can't escape them."

"Your mother was incredibly brave," Isabella said, gripping his shoulders tightly. "And she raised a brave son. You saved my life tonight, Noah. Now I am going to save yours. I promise you."

She stood up, turning to Dominic. "Is there another way out?"

"An old smuggling tunnel," Dominic said, walking down the narrow row of ancient stone tombs. "Built during Prohibition. It leads to the sewer main three blocks away. But it hasn't been used in forty years."

"It's going to be used tonight," Vincent grunted, tearing a piece of his shirt to bind his bleeding shoulder. He looked at Isabella. "We have a problem. They found us too fast. I swept that SUV for trackers this morning."

Isabella frowned. "Elena?"

"Elena didn't touch the car," Vincent said, his eyes narrowing. "She was waiting for you in the garage. Someone else gave away our location."

The crypt fell completely silent.

Isabella looked down at the gold pocket watch in her hand. Then she looked at the silver rosary Dominic was holding.

Suddenly, a realization hit her with the force of a freight train.

"Noah," Isabella said slowly, her voice dropping to a terrifying calm. "Where did your mother find this watch?"

Noah wiped his eyes. "I told you. In your husband's safe."

"Anthony’s safe was biometric," Isabella said, stepping closer to the boy. "It required his fingerprint. Even I couldn't open it. How did a nurse open it twelve years after he supposedly died?"

Noah swallowed hard, backing up slightly against the stone wall. "I... I don't know."

Isabella’s eyes narrowed. She had spent twenty-seven years reading the faces of liars, thieves, and killers. She knew when someone was hiding something.

"Noah," Isabella said, her voice hardening. "Maria didn't steal this watch from Anthony's safe, did she?"

The boy didn't answer. He looked at the floor, his small hands trembling.

Vincent raised his shotgun slightly. "Isabella, what are you saying?"

"I'm saying the boy is lying," Isabella said coldly. She grabbed the silver tray Noah had refused to drop since they left the restaurant. She flipped it over.

Taped to the bottom of the heavy silver tray was a tiny, blinking red GPS tracker.

Vincent swore violently, raising his weapon, but Isabella held up her hand, stopping him.

"Who gave you the watch, Noah?" Isabella demanded.

Noah burst into tears, sliding down the wall until he was sitting on the damp floor.

"He said he would kill my sister!" Noah sobbed, burying his face in his hands. "He said if I didn't bring you the watch and tell you the story about my mom, he would hurt her!"

Isabella felt the floor drop beneath her. "Who?"

Noah looked up, his face twisted in absolute terror.

"The man with the scar," Noah whispered. "Your son."

The air in the crypt froze.

Isabella stared at the boy, unable to process the words. "Michael?"

"He came to my house yesterday," Noah cried. "He gave me the picture. He gave me the key to Room 17. He told me to wait until the dinner, give you the watch, and tell you his father had kidnapped him. He said I had to make you run away with me."

Vincent let out a dark, bitter laugh, leaning against the tomb. "Well, well. It seems the prodigal son didn't just return. He set the trap."

"No," Isabella breathed, shaking her head. "No, Michael tackled Anthony! He locked himself in the hallway to save us!"

"He locked the door to ensure you got into the elevator," Vincent corrected brutally. "To ensure you ran, taking the tracker with you. Think about it, Isabella. Why would Anthony fake his death, hide his son for seventeen years, just to let the kid wander into a restaurant and hand you the master ledger?"

Isabella looked at the gold watch in her hand.

She pressed the top button again. The face popped open, revealing the thumb drive.

"Dominic," Isabella said, her voice shaking. "Do you have a computer in your office upstairs?"

"Yes, but it's likely destroyed by now," Dominic said.

"I need to know what's on this drive," Isabella insisted, desperation clawing at her throat.

Vincent reached into his coat with his good arm and pulled out a sleek, encrypted smartphone. "Plug it into this with the adapter. My tech guys can read the file headers."

Isabella snatched the phone, plugging the small drive into the port. The screen flickered, loading the encrypted files.

It wasn't a ledger.

It wasn't a list of offshore accounts or political bribes.

It was a single, massive video file.

Isabella pressed play.

The screen illuminated with grainy security footage. It showed a dark, familiar office. Her office.

The timestamp in the corner read: Seventeen Years Ago.

On the screen, a younger Isabella sat behind her desk. Frank Delaney stood in front of her.

"The boy is out of control, Frank," the younger Isabella said on the video, her voice cold and unfeeling. "Michael is soft. He’s a liability. Anthony wants to hand him the empire, and he'll destroy everything we've built in a month."

"What do you want me to do, Madam?" Frank asked.

"Cut the brakes on his car tonight," Isabella ordered without a hint of emotion. "Make sure it burns. We'll tell Anthony it was the Romanos."

The video ended.

Isabella stared at the black screen, her entire world shattering into a million jagged pieces.

"That's a deepfake," Vincent said immediately, recognizing the danger. "It's synthetic audio. High-end manipulation. You never ordered that hit."

"But Michael doesn't know that," Isabella whispered, the horrifying truth finally settling in her bones.

Anthony hadn't kidnapped Michael to groom him. He had kidnapped him to brainwash him. For seventeen years, Anthony had shown Michael that fake video, convincing his son that his own mother had tried to murder him.

Michael hadn't locked the door upstairs to save her. He had locked it to trap her in a cat-and-mouse game, giving her the false hope of his survival, only to hunt her down and destroy her.

Her son wasn't a hostage. He was the assassin.

Suddenly, a massive explosion rocked the crypt above them. Dust and stone rained down from the ceiling as the heavy granite door finally gave way.

And through the settling smoke, Michael Moretti walked down the stairs, holding a suppressed pistol, his eyes completely dead.

"Hello, Mother," Michael said.
